(Extra)ORDINARY MEN: African-American Lawyers and Civil Rights in Arkansas Before 1950 Judith Kilpatrick* “The remarkable thing is not that black men attempted to regain their stolen civic rights, but that they tried over and over again, using a wide va- riety of techniques.”1 I. INTRODUCTION Arkansas has a tradition, beginning in 1865, of African- American attorneys who were active in civil rights. One of these motifs is winged angel. This sacred and divine creature which appears in human-shaped, serves intermediaries between the God and people, and during history, indicates legitimating and bestows God-given glory. This article aims to present the results of exploring the historical background of the winged angels in Iran, in order to understand its precise concept; where it comes from and what it resembles. -

James Gordon Frierson and Emma Gwynne Davis At age thirty-one, on November 12, 1868, James Gordon Frierson (1837–1884), a Civil War veteran, married twenty-one-year-old Emma Gwynne Davis (1847–1899) in Cleburne, Arkansas. James Gordon Frierson was born in Maury County, Tennessee, the fourth of eleven children (four boys and seven girls). With his family and a large contingent of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, he moved in 1841 to the town of College Hill, Mississippi, in Lafayette County, near Oxford. As a youngster, James Gordon Frierson received a religious and classical early education1 at a church-sponsored school called North Mississippi College and at a prep school called the College Hill Male Academy. At age seventeen, he entered the University of Mississippi2 at Oxford as a sophomore. He transferred for his senior year to La Grange College3 in Tennessee, where he graduated first in his class in 1858, at age twenty. James Gordon Frierson was a twenty-three-year-old second-year student at the University of Mississippi Law School 4 when he joined the Confederate Army in April 1861. During the war, he fought with two different regiments in the Western Theater, mostly in Kentucky and Tennessee. His first tour of Confederate service5 with the 15th Mississippi Infantry Regiment ended shortly after the Battle of Fishing Creek (also known as the Battle of Mill Springs) in Kentucky on January 19, 1862. After that battle, he wrote a letter to his mother. In February 1862, he was discharged from the army for “General debility caused by repeated attacks of Typhoid Fever.” James Gordon Frierson had a first cousin, Charles Currin Frierson (1838–1897), who was his close friend, classmate, and Confederate brother-in-arms in the early years of the Civil War.6 James Gordon Frierson re-enlisted in April 1862 with the 30th Mississippi Infantry Regiment and began his second period of Confederate service7 during the Siege of Corinth between April 29–May 30, 1862. -

Operational and tactical military history is not terribly fashionable among academics, despite its popularity with general readers. Even the “new military history” tends to shun the traditional approach. Yet, there is great utility and significance to studying campaigns and battles as the late Russell Weigley, Professor of History at Temple University often said, “armies are for fighting.” Warfare reflects the societies waging it, and armies are in turn, reflections of their societies. Robert Goetz, an independent historian, has produced a comprehensive account of Austerlitz, emphasizing Austrian and Russian perspectives on the event. “The story of the 1805 campaign and the stunning battle of Austerlitz,” writes Goetz, “is the story of the beginning of the Napoleon of history and the Grande Armée of legend.”[1] Goetz further stresses, “[n]o other single battle save Waterloo would match the broad impact of Austerlitz on the course of European history.”[2] Certainly, one can take exception to these broad sweeping statements but, in short, they properly characterize the established perception of the battle and its impact. For Goetz, Austerlitz takes center stage, and the diplomatic and strategic environment exists only to provide context for the climactic encounter between Napoleon and the Russo-Austrian armies. Austerlitz was Napoleon’s most decisive victory and as such has been the focus of numerous military histories of the Napoleonic Era. -

“The Qur’an and the Modern Self: A Heterotopia,” Social Research: An International Quarterly, Volume 85, No. 3, Fall 2018, pp. 557-572. No book has been so vilified in the Christian West, while at the same time remaining so almost completely unread, as the Qur’an. Those who did at least delve into it put it to numerous and contradictory purposes. Churchmen such as Martin Luther cited it as the ultimate heresy. Enlightenment intellectuals such as Thomas Jefferson valued it for its post-pagan monotheism. In the early decades of the twenty-first century it has been libeled as a font of terrorism. Yet it is the scripture of a quarter of humankind. Prominent writers have often engaged with it as a staccato “heterotopia,” one continually constructed and forgotten, since for all its importance, it has never been part of the literary canon. We have come to the book by diverse and winding pathways. Author Al Young, whom Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor appointed California’s poet laureate, spoke of the profound influence on his craft of the music of jazz legend Yusef Lateef, whose performances he used to attend while growing up in Detroit. He wrote, “That he was Muslim intrigued us. Eventually, to understand a little about where Yusef was coming from, I read British Muslim Marmaduke Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’an: The Glorious Koran. And I was moved” (Young 2013). Between the utopia and the dystopia Michel Foucault positioned the heterotopia, a place in- between, juxtaposed to but not part of the world. He mentioned as examples “the garden, brothel, rest home, festival, magic carpet, Muslim baths” and even “Persian gardens” and “the cemetery” (Johnson 2013). -

June 2017 Austerlitz: Empires come and empires go The success of the French Revolution in 1789 had profoundly disrupted the balance of power in Europe, not so much from a strictly military perspective, but from the concept of war itself and its consequences. Whereas under the Ancien Régime, the consequence of battle was a realignment of forces between various closely-related royal families, the emergence of the French Republic gave way to a new scenario in which it faced the need to wipe out a novel political system on the one hand and the absolute need to survive on the other. The image of Louis XVI beheaded by guillotine had sown terror in the masses and now the rules were simply kill or be killed. The intrinsic mission of the Revolution and the Republic was to expand to the rest of the population, oppressed by masters, who naturally wanted not only to keep the Revolution at bay but sought to eradicate it from France entirely and restore the monarchy. Thus, the scenario shifted from one of more or less tactical alliances devised to place a given relative at the head of a kindred kingdom to one of absolute ideological conflict, an all-against-one scenario to which France had grown accustomed and to which it adapted by way of a very powerful army of devoted soldiers, dogged and competent officers, and generals chosen by merit, when not directly by guillotine-based natural selection.
