BHOPAL CITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN Under JNNURM BHOPAL CITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN Jnnurm JAWAHARLAL NEHRU NATIONAL URBAN RENEWAL MISSION BHOPAL MUNICIPAL CORPORATION TECHNICAL SUPPORT MEHTA &ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTS & PLANNERS, INDORE MEHTA & ASSOCIATES INDORE I BHOPAL CITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN Under JNNURM PREFACE Globalisation and its trends have brought into currency, the notion that urban local bodies ought to adopt some aspects of the work culture of private corporations. This is especially with regard to the maintenance of quality standards. The exercise done by BMC in formulation of the City Development Plan was unique. This was largely because it adopted a participatory process involving the elected and the administrative wings of the Corporation, as well as citizens of varied interests, and other organisations concerned with the city’s growth and development. In the context of the 74th Constitutional Amendment, which gives the urban local bodies more freedom and power in executing their functions, the study has provided BMC invaluable inputs regarding the intricacies of urban governance and finance. Today, when every urban local body is striving to provide its citizens with the best of governance, only those like Bhopal figure where decentralised efforts in improving the city’s living environment are clearly visible and are above all other interests. Bhopal an age-old trade centre has been confronted with issues from time to time, which it has used to strengthen itself. The global economic recession has caused diversification of industrial and occupational patterns. It is this context that the Bhopal Municipal Corporation is trying to define its presence in the city. Its strategy is to move from ‘tackling issues’ to ‘not allowing issues to emerge’ by means of effective, integrated and phased plans. With such a long-term goal to be fulfilled and delivered to its citizens by 2021, the City Development planning process warranted a high level of public participation. The overwhelming response to the “City Development Strategy” workshop as well as the zone level and ward level consultative meetings helped chalk out the purpose of the short-term strategic plan as ‘To foresee an issueless 2021’. The City Development Plan for Bhopal deals with a comprehensive, cohesive and concise manner, all the important elements of governance in the form of themes: Urban Growth Management/ Development Planning, Urban Basic Services and Infrastructure, Transportation and Traffic Management, Housing and Slums, Urban Environment, Social Development, Urban Governance and Management and Urban Finance and Management apart from Demographic Trends, Economy Pattern, etc with a long term strategic vision. It is believed that this effort of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation will bring in a corporate vision to the Institution and a change that the citizens of Bhopal will contribute to, and ultimately benefit from.     Sacralizing the City: the Begums of Bhopal and Their Mosques

    DOI: 10.15415/cs.2014.12007 Sacralizing the City: The Begums of Bhopal and their Mosques Jyoti Pandey Sharma Abstract Princely building ventures in post 1857 colonial India included, among others, construction of religious buildings, even as their patrons enthusiastically pursued the colonial modernist agenda. This paper examines the architectural patronage of the Bhopal Begums, the women rulers of Bhopal State, who raised three grand mosques in their capital, Bhopal, in the 19th and early 20th century. As Bhopal marched on the road to progress under the Begums’ patronage, the mosques heralded the presence of Islam in the city in the post uprising scenario where both Muslims and mosques were subjected to retribution for fomenting the 1857 insurrection. Bhopal’s mosques were not only sacred sites for the devout but also impacted the public realm of the city. Their construction drew significantly on the Mughal architectural archetype, thus affording the Begums an opportunity to assert themselves, via their mosques, as legitimate inheritors of the Mughal legacy, including taking charge of the latter’s legacy of stewardship of Islam. Today, the Bhopal mosques constitute an integral part of the city’s built heritage corpus. It is worth underscoring that they are not only important symbols of the Muslim faith but also markers of their patrons’ endeavour to position themselves at the forefront in the complex political and cultural scenario of post uprising colonial India. Received 3 July, 2014; Accepted 22 July, 2014 Bhopal, the capital city of the state of Madhya Pradesh, India is famous for its numerous lakes. The Bhoj Wetland is a wetland of international importance (Ramsar Site). In the two years of study period, a total of 82 zooplankton species were recorded from February 2008-January 2010. Out of which 66 species were recorded in the 1st year (2008-2009), and 70 species documented during the 2nd year (2009-2010). The zooplankton population belongs to five major groups namely: Rotifera (46%), followed by Cladocera (34%), Protozoa (10%) and Copepoda and Ostracoda contributing 6 and 4%, respectively. With regards to Rotifera, in the major peak of June 2009 (38 species), was dominated by the various species of Brachionus and Keratella. The population density data revealed that cumulative site mean density ranged from 84 to 1579 Ind. l-1, with an overall mean of 399 Ind. l-1. The 24 months of mean site density indicated a major peak of 1579 Ind.

Received: 10 January 2020; Revised: 24 January 2020; Accepted: 30 January 2020 Abstract: Present study was aimed to assess the zooplankton diversity and entire ecological condition of Sarangpani pond of Bhopal city. Total of 78 zooplankton species were recorded from the ponds waters during two years of study period which consisted of Rotifera 29 species (37%), Cladocera &Protozoa 16 species each (20% each), Copepoda 13 species (17%) and Ostracoda 4 species (5%). Among all the zooplankton classes, species belongs to the class Rotifera were recorded their dominance during both the years of study. The dominance of Rotifers population in terms of quality has been recorded. Seasonal variation of zooplankton population recorded maximum species diversity of class Rotifera during summer (1st year) and winter season (2nd year). On the other hand, minimum population density was contributed by class Copepoda in all the season. Presence of various pollution indicator zooplankton species indicates and evidences the high anthropogenic pressure and direct mixing sewage from the nearby catchment in the pond waters which has accelerated the eutrophication in the Sarangpani pond.
