ENGLISH P. 2 DEUTSCH S. 6 the art of the Finnish Kantele M. kontio | E. Sariola | M. Pokela PROFESSOR MARTTI POKELA has made it his life’s work to collect the traditional music of Finland and make it known at home and abroad, preserving the traditional kantele music while composing new pieces for the instrument. Professor Pokela teaches Folk Music and Kantele at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland’s capital. EEVA-LEENA SARIOLA, Martti Pokela’s daughter, has combined a classical training with the traditions of folk music in her playing. She has lectured on Finnish folk music both in Finland and abroad, and also teaches at the Sibelius Academy. MATTI KONTIO has been greatly responsible for popularising the kantele and he has developed new playing methods of the kantele. He also is a teacher at the Sibelius Academy. 2 KANTELE The Finnish name of a folk instrument of the psaltery type, known elsewhere as kannel (Estonia), kokle (Latvia), kankles (Lithuania) and gusli (north-western Russia). The tuning of the strings varies according to the musical style and region. The player rests the instrument in his lap or props it on his knees and leans it against his body; indoors it can be placed on a table. The shortest string is usually nearest to the player. The playing technique varies as much as the tuning; when playing single melodies the player plucks the open strings with the right-hand fingertips, and damps the others with the finger of his left hand. Very occasionally a small plectrum of bone, wood or metal is used.

TOPICS AND COMMENTS Practical Guides to Studying Folklore This is the second installment of Folk- lore Forum's new series of folklore program profiles. We encourage our readers to submit further contributions or suggestions. In particular, we invite students who participate or have participated in public sector folklore programs to send in accounts of their work experience. FOLKLORE AND ETHNOMUSICOLOGY IN CONTEMPORARY FINLAND Carl Rahkonen " A little more than two years ago, I had the priviledge of receiving a Fulbright grant to do fieldwork on the kantele, Finland's national musical instrument. I found Finland a land rich in living folk traditions, and was able to do a great deal of primary field collecting. But Finland has also been studied extensively by folklorists and ethnomusicologists in the past, and I obtained a great deal of valuable information from the excellent archives, museums and other institutions I visited. This article is primarily intended for folklore students, fieldworkers and other scholars who may some day visit Finland, and who can gain from an awareness of the resources available. Finland has had a long academic tradition of studying folklore. (1) Any student of folklore recognizes the place of Elias Lonnrot, collector of folk runes and author of the epic Kalevala. One of the earliest paradigms of our discipline, the "Finnish Method," developed as a response to extensive folklore collecting and the organization of this material in archives. I am happy to report that folkloristics is alive and well in Finland. It is a highly respected field of study with many first rate, international- ly known scholars and a good number of students.

  • The Kalevala, Popular Music, and National Culture Kari Kallioniemi
Journal of Finnish Studies, Volume 13, Number 2, Winter 2009 The Kalevala, Popular Music, and National Culture Kari Kallioniemi & Kimi Kärki University of Turku Abstract This article examines the diverse and at times hard-to-discern relationship between the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, and Finnish popular music. The Kalevala, existing in a number of variations already in the nineteenth century, can be considered part of a long-term process of storytelling by singing. The printed epic is only one phase in this tradition. From this point of view, Finnish culture retains its Kalevalaic singing tradition, which has simply received a new range of features over time. We identify traces of the Kalevala in Finnish popular music, from progressive rock to parody performances, to esoteric experimentation, and to the sounds of the electric kantele, the Finnish zither. The Kalevala appears to hold a special place in Finnish heavy metal culture, which – among its repertoire of mythologies – draws on the myths involved in nation building and in the emergence of Finnishness. Finnish popular music, just like the Kalevala tradition, was born in the riptide of influences from East and West. All in all, this singing tradition has played a part in producing the self-image of the Finns and, in some cases, also the image to the outside world. Over the last few decades, the neo- Popular Culture, Finnishness and “Imagined nationalist interest in national identity and its Communities” inheritance that emerged after the Cold War has Benedict Anderson's (1994) pioneering been discernable also in Finland, as an increased study of the formation of national identity has interest in Finnishness and its various become increasingly important when considering manifestations.
