We’re excited to share our first programme with you. There are 30 films to pack into our two and a half days with sixteen feature films, five documentaries and nine short films. We have contributions from the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and France but also from the Bahamas, Dom- inica and our own Turks and Caicos film-makers. We even have one short film from a Kurdish film-maker in Iran. Our geographical spread is matched by the range of subjects. There are plenty of films dealing with our main theme of Oceans and the Environment, but we’ve also invited some of our special guests to bring one of their favourite films that they have made. That will give us horror, comedy and romance to add to the thrillers and documentaries along with some great new family films. Between the films, we have a great line up of speaker panels which are free to join. I urge you to attend as many as you can. We have a lot of visitors over this weekend and we want to show them how much their interest and support means to us all. Happy viewing! Gala Film Director: Tom Mustill. 3 mins 39secs Page 8 Sea of Shadows Friday 15th Nov 8pm The Shore Club Our opening night gala presentation, this documentary is a thrilling drama in its own right. As the NY Times review pointed out “It’s become a little easy to say that a documentary unfolds like a big-budget spectacle, but “Sea of Shadows” — a suspenseful, wide-screen drama filled with gun- fire, cartels and corruption — is actually shot and edited like one”. Introduced by its field Producer Ru Mahoney, this film is on the road to Oscar glory in 2020. Gala Film Director: Richard Kadkani. 1 hr 43 mins. BBFC certificate 12A – suitable for 12 years and over Page 9 The Dead Don’t Die Friday 15th Nov 8.30pm Palms The film that opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, brings us back to our environmental themes. A climate change zombie comedy, Jim Jarmusch brings together many of his favourite actors including Bill Murray and Adam Driver in a gory salute to the horror genre. In a message to our film goers, Jim says “Hello and respect to everyone at the Turks & Caicos Film Festival and thank you for presenting our film The Dead Don’t Die. Your festivals’ focus on the environmental crisis is of the greatest importance and urgency. Watching nature decline at unprecedented rates for me is terrifying and concerning, and what concerns me is the apathy and failure to address something that threatens all living species.” Director: Jim Jarmusch. 1 hr 43 mins. BBFC certificate 15 – suitable for 15 years and over Page 10 Saturday 16th Nov 11am The Shore Club The Short Hour Short films can often be more impactful than the long films and in this collection we’re bringing you a mix of dramas, locally made short docs and one delightful 2 minute film from a Kurdish film maker in Iran. If you only spend one hour at the festival this year, this is the hour for you – a sampler which covers all our interests. Directors: Philippot, Saman Hosseinpuor, Lavado Stubbs, Ezra Remer and Alexander Musca, Nadine Licostie 1hr approx. Multiple ratings - suitable for 15 years and over Page 11 Saturday 16th Nov 12pm The Shore Club Humpback Whales: A Detective Story Tom Mustill will introduce his personal account of how a whale, which breached on top of him while kayaking, led to a quest to discover more about the Humpback Whale. Tom takes us on an entertaining and intimate journey with these enchanting mammals. Director: Tom Mustill. 1 hr. Page 12 Arktika Incognita Saturday 16th Nov 6pm Palms Introduced by its writer/producer Luc Hardy, this documentary joins Luc and a mixed crew of free divers, scientists and musicians embarking on a voyage to remote Arctic islands to map Man’s impact on the region and follow in the footsteps of the ill fated 1879 exploration by USS Jeanette. Part nature documentary, part adventure, this well made film will make you very glad you are watching it in the warmth of TCI. Director: Bertrand Delapierre & Alain Zenou. 52 mins. Page 13 Sunday 17th Nov 11am Palms Carried by the Current To tie in with Sunday’s focus on filming beneath the waves, local film-maker Dalia Engler gives us a glimpse of the beauty under the sea we all want to pre- serve. Though filmed all over the world, look out for her section filmed here in the TCI. Director: Dalia Engler. 11 mins. Page 14 Uncivilised Sunday 17th Nov 11am Palms A delightful new film from Dominican director Michael Lees with a personal account of how he returned to his native island, determined to get away from the pressures of modern life and the consumer life style. Hiking into the forest he settles down to spend six months living off the land and surviving alone. Unfortunately, as we see in his candid self-shot film, he chose the late summer of 2017 and Maria was on her way. Director: Michael Lees. 1 hr 15 mins. Not yet rated - 12A advisory Page 15 Sunday 17th Nov 2pm Palms Sharkwater Extinction Rob Stewart, who died towards the end of production in a diving accident, has made a stand out documentary about the industrial destruction of marine life. In his passionate and gripping film, we follow Rob and his colleagues on the track of brutal shark fishing practices that devastate our oceans. Presented in the presence of its producers, his parents, Brian and Sandra Stewart. Sharkwater Extinction is followed by a panel session on Sharks. Director: Rob Stewart. 1 hr 30 mins.
