Welcome to our inaugural film festival. We’re excited to share our first programme with you. There are 30 films to pack into our two and a half days with sixteen feature films, five documentaries and nine short films.

We have contributions from the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and France but also from the Bahamas, Dom- inica and our own Turks and Caicos film-makers. We even have one short film from a Kurdish film-maker in Iran.

Our geographical spread is matched by the range of subjects. There are plenty of films dealing with our main theme of Oceans and the Environment, but we’ve also invited some of our special guests to bring one of their favourite films that they have made. That will give us horror, comedy and romance to add to the thrillers and documentaries along with some great new family films.

Between the films, we have a great line up of speaker panels which are free to join. I urge you to attend as many as you can. We have a lot of visitors over this weekend and we want to show them how much their interest and support means to us all.

Happy viewing!

Our opening night gala presentation, this documentary is a thrilling drama in its own right. As the NY Times review pointed out “It’s become a little easy to say that a documentary unfolds like a big-budget spectacle, but “Sea of Shadows” — a suspenseful, wide-screen drama filled with gun- fire, cartels and corruption — is actually shot and edited like one”. Introduced by its field Producer Ru Mahoney, this film is on the road to Oscar glory in 2020. Gala Film

The film that opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, brings us back to our environmental themes. A climate change zombie comedy, Jim Jarmusch brings together many of his favourite actors including and in a gory salute to the horror genre. In a message to our film goers, Jim says “Hello and respect to everyone at the Turks & Caicos Film Festival and thank you for presenting our film The Dead Don’t Die. Your festivals’ focus on the environmental crisis is of the greatest importance and urgency. Watching nature decline at unprecedented rates for me is terrifying and concerning, and what concerns me is the apathy and failure to address something that threatens all living species.”

The Climate of Opinion In the first of our panels we ask - can Hol- lywood help the environment? Extinction Rebellion brought London to a standstill for two weeks recently to change people’s attitude to climate change At the end of that period, fewer people supported their aims than at the beginning. So if direct action isn’t working, what can storytelling do to change people’s minds? Is there even a role for the film industry or is it just an entertain- ment machine for making ?

Panellists include: Producer Paul Colichman who has a distinguished career in Hollywood promoting content that supports LGBT issues; James Fulcher a board member of TV FOR THE ENVIRONMENT which gives awards each year to encourage environmental programming: Nick Reed, Academy Award winning documentary producer, former Hollywood agent and marketing expert; Richard LeMay, director and one of our film-maker mentors at the festival and Richard Curtis, who in between writing or di- recting some of the most loved British films of all time (FOUR WEDDINGS & A FUNERAL, , LOVE ACTUALLY and YESTERDAY which is screening at the festival) somehow found time to found Red Nose Day and – charities that have raised millions for those in need around the world.

It’s Only Natural In a changing world, has the nature documentary changed too? What role do wildlife film-makers have in the debate on climate change and how do industry leaders like the BBC Natural History team see their part in that conversation? For example the BBC’s BLUE PLANET episode on the damage plastic is doing to marine life became one of the most influential moments in television history – was it by design or by accident?

In this panel we get to hear from a key player in that story, Jonny Keeling, Executive Producer of the world renowned BBC Natural History Unit. Jonny exec produced both series of the award winning PLANET EARTH and is working on the third. He is also the exec producer of the BBC’s new blockbuster series SEVEN WORLDS - ONE PLANET which has just launched and he’ll be sharing ex- tracts from that during this session. Also joining us are Tom Mustill, wildlife film director whose film, HUMPBACK WHALES, A DETECTIVE STORY will screen immediately after this session and Luc Hardy, environmental film maker and explorer whose documentary ARKTIKA INCOGNITA which details a polar expedition he led, will play later in the day.

The session is chaired by Donald Uricchio, the Senior Director of Animal and Museum Exhibitions at The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Miami, who has a distinguished career in ocean conservation.

Don Stark Duncan Brake

A look at how underwater filming techniques Diving Into The Past have changed over the years and although there will be plenty to interest the camera savvy, this is really an exploration of how our attitudes to wildlife have changed along with the technology we use to film them.

Since founding ScubaVision Productions he has won many awards for both his underwater and above water productions.

Duncan Brake, who will be joining Don on the panel, is a marine biologist and award winning under- water cinematographer who has travelled, photographed and filmed, extensively throughout the world.
