(CDEL) alleges as follows for its Complaint against Defendants Penguin Random House, Roadside Attractions, LLC, Miramax, LLC, Mitch Cullin, and William Condon. INTRODUCTION 1. This action for copyright infringement arises from unauthorized copying by Mitch Cullin—in his novel A Slight Trick of the Mind and in the motion picture Mr. Holmes based on the novel—of original Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Conan Doyle). The remaining defendants have participated in copying these protected stories in the infringing movie, have published and distributed the infringing novel and motion picture, and have titled the movie so as to confuse consumers and unfairly trade on CDEL’s goodwill. 2. Defendant Mitch Cullin grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and through his father became acquainted with the noted Sherlockian scholar and collector John Bennett Shaw, who also lived in Santa Fe. SECTION 5: CHINA’S DOMESTIC INFORMATION CONTROLS, GLOBAL MEDIA INFLUENCE, AND CYBER DIPLOMACY Key Findings • China’s current information controls, including the govern- ment’s new social credit initiative, represent a significant es- calation in censorship, surveillance, and invasion of privacy by the authorities. • The Chinese state’s repression of journalists has expanded to target foreign reporters and their local Chinese staff. It is now much more difficult for all journalists to investigate politically sensitive stories. • The investment activities of large, Chinese Communist Par- ty-linked corporations in the U.S. media industry risk under- mining the independence of film studios by forcing them to consider self-censorship in order to gain access to the Chinese market. • China’s overseas influence operations to pressure foreign media have become much more assertive. In some cases, even without direct pressure by Chinese entities, Western media companies now self-censor out of deference to Chinese sensitivity. • Beijing is promoting its concept of “Internet sovereignty” to jus- tify restrictions on freedom of expression in China. These poli- cies act as trade barriers to U.S. companies through both cen- sorship and restrictions on cross-border data transfers, and they are fundamental points of disagreement between Washington and Beijing. • In its participation in international negotiations on global Inter- net governance, norms in cyberspace, and cybersecurity, Beijing seeks to ensure continued control of networks and information in China and to reduce the risk of actions by other countries that are not in its interest. Fearing that international law will be used by other countries against China, Beijing is unwilling to agree on specific applications of international law to cyberspace. -

Media Contact: Meg Floryan Communications Manager [email protected] / 305.535.2622 The Wolfsonian–FIU Revisits Blockbuster Exhibition Thoughts on Democracy with Graphic Remix Project Tied to the 2016 Presidential Election Four contemporary designers to re-envision the politics of Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms paintings with new poster commissions inspired by the theme “Freedom to Vote” Museum will celebrate with pop-up art installations, nighttime projections, political programming, and more, kicking off August 26, 2016 Turnberry for the Arts will showcase new posters concurrently at Aventura Mall MIAMI BEACH (July 18, 2016) — Leading up to Election Day (November 8), The Wolfsonian– Florida International University is presenting three months of election-themed programming centered around Thoughts on Democracy: Freedom to Vote 2016, a collaboration with contemporary designers Mirko Ilić, Oliver Munday, Paul Sahre, and Bonnie Siegler to create a graphic response to the 2016 presidential race. Using “Freedom to Vote” as a springboard, the four artists will design original posters inspired by some of the chaos and obstacles inherent in the American voting process, regardless of party affiliation or political beliefs. Thoughts on Democracy: Freedom to Vote 2016 follows the success of Thoughts on Democracy (2008)—an installation that featured original work by sixty contemporary artists—eight years and one two- term president later. The final designs will be on view for free from August 26 through November 8 in the museum’s iconic lobby, and also reproduced large-scale at Aventura Mall in partnership with Turnberry for the Arts, post-Labor Day through the election on the lower level adjacent to Center Court. -

Since 1980, the number of media companies has dropped from fifty to merely five, following an aggressive series of mergers and acquisitions. Newspapers, magazines, film companies, radio, television stations, and book publishers have all transformed from individually owned companies into large, corporate organizations.
