Richard Page, Lara Schwarz, & Nora Hellmold Vosburg) due for publication in 2016. https://scholarworks.iupui.edu Texas Alsatian, Medina County, Texas 1 Introduction: Historical background The Alsatian dialect was transported to Texas in the early 1800s, when entrepreneur Henri Castro recruited colonists from the French Alsace to comply with the Republic of Texas’ stipulations for populating one of his land grants located just west of San Antonio. Castro’s colonization efforts succeeded in bringing 2,134 German-speaking colonists from 1843 – 1847 (Jordan 2004: 45-7; Weaver 1985:109) to his land grants in Texas, which resulted in the establishment of four colonies: Castroville (1844); Quihi (1845); Vandenburg (1846); D’Hanis (1847). Castroville was the first and most successful settlement and serves as the focus of this chapter, as it constitutes the largest concentration of Alsatian speakers. This chapter provides both a descriptive account of the ancestral language, Alsatian, and more specifically as spoken today, as well as a discussion of sociolinguistic and linguistic processes (e.g., use, shift, variation, regularization, etc.) observed and documented since 2007. Il se déroule dans les locaux situés dans la cour de l’école maternelle de Emlingen ( bâtiment qui, avant l’agrandissement de l’école, accueillait une salle de classe). Une nouvelle structure implique que les enfants puissent s’approprier les locaux et s’y sentir bien, c’est donc par la décoration et l’aménagement de l’espace que l’équipe a démarré ses activités. Un « Tour du Monde » est le support choisi pour les activités du soir où les enfants découvriront des activités telles que la construction d’une voiture à pédale, des ateliers culinaires réguliers, initiation à la musique, découverte de jeux du monde… L’équipe a également choisi de travailler sur la découverte des acteurs locaux, de l’environnement proche notamment sur les mercredis. Ainsi les enfants ont pu découvrir la médiathèque de Wittersdorf où un partenariat a été mis en place avec des activités spécifiques prévues tout au long de l’année. Ils ont également arpenté le sentier botanique et commencé un livre photos sur ce que l’on trouve dans les environs. Une chasse au trésor a été proposée pour découvrir Altkirch à l’approche des fêtes. La ludothèque est également un partenaire régulier puisque les enfants y vont une fois par mois pour emprunter et jouer sur place. Une soirée jeux en famille et dégustation de gâteaux de noël a été organisée le vendredi 11 décembre, moment convivial pour découvrir encore des familles et créer du lien.
