It will be welcomed, in particular, by authors, who have groaned under the financial burden of reproduction costs. Under the new policy, images available through the museum's 'Search the Collections' service will be available for download in hi-resolution format, and used free of charge, at up to A5 size, in scholarly journals, student theses, private study and research, critical editorial use, charity, society and trust newsletters, and for print runs of up to 4,000 in academic or educational books. The new policy, including the terms and conditions and other information, is outlined in full on page 39 of this issue of Bulletin, and there will be updates on the V&A website in due course. My thanks go to Andrea Stern, m Head of V&A Images, for clarification of the Museum's new policy. ^^^^^^^^^ ^J^^^^ Following the highly successful forum on the subject of copyright and reproduction costs held at the Courtauld Institute in June 2005, the AAH and the Courtauld Institute have jointly campaigned for freer access to reproduction of museum-held material. Professor Pat Rubin, Head of Research at the Courtauld, has been 16th-century German stained-gloss panel, The Mocking of Job particularly active in forwarding the aims of the (Museum no. C.216-1928).     RESEARCH REPORT | 2016 CONTENTS Introduction 01 Collaborative Doctoral Partnership 02 Research projects 05 Publications and advice 08 Exhibitions 11 Conferences, lectures and talks 13 INTRODUCTION 2016 was a further busy year, with our staff and PhD students involved in research across a wide spectrum of activities. Our first Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded international network, Listening to the World, which sought to establish the academic value of the BBC Monitoring Service transcript collection, showed us how invigorating such networks can be. The project concluded with the firm conviction on the part of all participants that the collection was indeed of huge value, and our webpages now carry papers and filmed interviews with the participating academics explaining why this is the case. It was especially rewarding - a few months after our project had finished - to take part in Dr Simon Potter’s workshop Connecting the Wireless World (under the auspices of a newly-awarded Leverhulme Trust research network) run by Bristol and York universities, with which we found a lot of shared interest. A joint publication drawing on both projects will appear as a Media History special issue on radio-monitoring in 2019. A restructure at IWM has seen our curatorial staff and historians redistributed into four new teams – broadly First World War, Second World War, Cold War and late 20th Century, and Contemporary. With fresh thinking on historical topics now made easier through co-locating subject specialists in this way, new possibilities arise, and meeting and talking to those teams was a key feature of 2016. The new Public Engagement and Learning Department has also produced a new and innovative approach to public programming, with themed seasons across all IWM sites now the backbone of the public programme, and we anticipate that the planning of such seasons will produce rich opportunities for research projects.

    Research Report 1994 The first issue of Research Register was produced by the Research Department in 1990. Museum colleagues and academics both in this country and abroad immediately recognised its importance as a comprehensive record of the V&A's research activity. In following years the format was steadily improved under the direction of Charles Saumarez Smith, Head of the Research Department. The dramatic growth nationally of interest in research output and the increase in the documentation on research led members of the Research Department to develop the Register further. From 1994 it will be produced biennially, reflecting the national and international calendar for such documents. A database of all research publications is now held in the National Art Library and is regularly updated. A new structure for the document makes the unique nature of research in the V&A more accessible both to the specialist and to the general reader. Emphasis is placed both on material and period-based study. It has been a good year. The Museum staff have produced many books, articles and reviews. They have delivered large numbers of papers to conferences and symposia all over the world. The Museum has hosted many events, including the annual Conference of the Association of Art Historians attended by nearly 1,000 delegates. The post-graduate programmes of study run jointly with the Royal College of Art continued to attract students from all over the world. Graduates of the V&A/RCA courses are now to be found in the foremost design practices, academic institutions and conservation workshops. The range of subject-matters covered in this Report is impressive.

    Research Report 1993 Message from the Director This is the fourth edition of the Museum's Research Register, which presents an overview of the range of research activities carried out throughout the Museum over the past year. The past year also saw the appearance of 'The Research Policy of the Victoria and Albert Museum'. This sets out the basis on which research within the Museum is organised and outlines the role of the Research Department, as it was developed under Charles Saumarez Smith, who, until he took up his appointment as Director of the National Portrait Gallery at the beginning of 1994, was its Head. As well as describing the different types of research and their uses in a museum, this document, which has been widely circulated and has received much attention, also provides a framework to which the specific details of research output given here may be related. The format of the register follows that used for the three previous years, each individual entry beginning with a summary of research in progress, contributions to conferences and other related activities, followed by a list of specific publications that appeared in 1993. In these entries the diversity of research at the V&A is clearly evident from both the variety of subjects gyaddressed and the different forms in which research appears. They range, for example, from Paul Williamson's volume in the Pelican History of Art on 'Gothic sculpture 1140-1300' to Colin Mulberg's article on the perception of technology in the national curriculum. Such diversity was recognised in 'The Research Policy' as one of the most important characteristics of research activity within the Museum.
