Ebury Publishing Autumn Catalogue 2020 EBURY PUBLISHING AUTUMN CATALOGUE 2020 Once Upon a Time in Iraq James Bluemel and Dr. Renad Mansour Accompanying a major 5-part BBC2 series from BAFTA- award winning documentary maker James Bleumel, a riveting oral history of the Iraq War, told from all sides of the conflict In war, there is no easy victory. When troops invaded Iraq in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein’s regime, most people expected an easy victory. Instead, the gamble we took was a grave mistake, and its ramifications continue to reverberate through the lives of millions, in Iraq and the West. As we gain more distance from those events, it can be argued that many of the issues facing us today – the rise of the Islamic State, increased Islamic terrorism, intensified violence in the Middle East, mass migration, and more – can be traced back to the decision to invade Iraq. In The Iraq War, award-winning documentary maker James Bluemel collects first-hand testimony from those who lived through the horrors of the invasion and whose actions were dictated by such extreme circumstances. It takes in all sides of the conflict – working class Iraqi families watching their country erupt into civil war; soldiers and journalists on the ground; American families dealing with the grief of losing their son or daughter; parents of a suicide bomber coming to terms with unfathomable events – to create the most in-depth and multi- faceted portrait of the Iraq War to date. Accompanying a major BBC series, James Bluemel’s book is an essential account of a conflict that continues to shape our world, and a startling July 2020 reminder of the consequences of our past decisions. 9781785944567 £20.00 : Hardback 416 pages A Year At The Circus Inside Trump's White House Jon Sopel Jon Sopel, the BBC’s North America Editor and author of the breakout political book of 2017, If Only They Didn’t Speak English, takes us inside the chaos of Trump’s White House. Welcome to the White House. At the heart of Washington, there is a circus. It's raucous, noisy and full of clowns. Reporting on it is a daily cacophony. Four major stories can blow up and blow out before breakfast, and political weather systems are moving at warp speed. The one thing absent from the weather forecast is the tranquil eye of the storm. That we never see. In A Year at the Circus: Inside Trump's White House, BBC North America Editor, Jon Sopel, takes you inside Trump’s West Wing and explores the impact this presidency has had on the most iconic of American institutions. Each chapter starts inside a famous Washington room, uncovering its history and its new resonance in the Trump era. You are invited to step inside the Oval Office where Trump called for loyalty from FBI Director James Comey, and experience life as a reporter in the Briefing Room, where the tense relationship between the media and the President is played out. Guiding you through these rooms, Jon reveals the inner workings of the Trump White House and details the key moments and conversations that have unfolded within its August 2020 walls. 9781785944390 £9.99 : Paperback From Kim Jong-un and Kavanaugh to Merkel and the Mueller 368 pages Inquiry - this is your insider guide to the Washington Circus. Roll up, roll up ... Jon Sopel has been the BBC’s North America Editor since 2014. He has covered the 2016 election and Trump's White House at first hand, reporting for the BBC across TV, radio, and online. As a member of the White House Press Corps, he has accompanied both President Obama and President Trump on Air Force One and interviewed President Obama at the White House. He has travelled extensively across the US and recently rode a Harley Davidson down the West Coast (that wasn't for work though). He lives in Washington and London. 1 Anne Karpf/The sound of home? Some thoughts on how the radio voice anchors, contains and sometimes pierces (pre-print version; published in The Radio Journal, vol.11, no.1, April 2013, pp.59-73) Abstract This article argues that while psychoanalytic theory has been valuably employed by television, film and cultural studies, there has been no comparable 'psychoanalytic turn' in radio studies. It suggests that the concept of 'containment', as developed variously by Wilfred Bion and Esther Bick, might go some way to explain the powerful role that the voice of the radio presenter can play in the regular listener's internal world, with the capacity both to 'hold' the listener together, and to transform overwhelming fears into more manageable feelings. It argues that the disembodied radio voice does this partly because it recalls the prenatal power of the maternal voice, and partly through the temporal order that regular radio voices impose on the internal and external world. Both Second World War British radio catchphrases and Roosevelt's Fireside Chats are discussed in relation to their containment function. The article also explores the radio as a transitional space, as defined by Donald Winnicott, through which it can constitute listeners into an 'imagined community'. It ends by reflecting on the impact of the angry voice of 2 the 'shock-jock' which, it suggests, amplifies rather than contains overwhelming feelings.1 Contributor's details Anne Karpf is Reader in Professional Writing and Cultural Inquiry at London Metropolitan University. A journalist, broadcaster and radio critic of The Guardian for seven years, her books include 'The Human Voice' (Bloomsbury, 2006; Ehrenwirth, 2007; Autrement, 2008; Soshisha, 2008).

Ponkin I.V. Conclusion of 26.I.2018 on the IOC Disciplinary Commission's Report chaired by Samuel Schmid dated 02.XII.2017 Introduction This Conclusion Report presents the results of the analysis of the Report of the IOC Disciplinary Commission chaired by Samuel Schmid, issued 02.12.2017, as presented to the IOC Executive Board1, (hereinafter the Report, Schmid Report). The goal of this Conclusion Report is an evaluation of the legal and factual justifiability of the statements, including the implications of the Schmid Report, as well as an evaluation of the legal potentiality and justifiability of using this Report as a basis and a justification of the IOC decision of 05.12.2017 to suspend the activities of the Russian Olympic Committee and to allow the participation of Russian athletes in 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang only under a neutral (Olympic) flag and without the National Anthem, and after more rigorous compulsory selection (as compared to athletes from other countries), as well as a basis and a justification to apply extra restrictions (as related to those already implemented prior to December 2017) and penalties to Russian athletes2, sports organizations, and national teams. This Conclusion Report is referring to the original text of the above-mentioned Report (as published at the IOC official website in the English language) taking into consideration the available translation into the Russian language. • Simonelli on Hendy, 'Life on Air: a History of Radio Four'
H-Albion Simonelli on Hendy, 'Life on Air: A History of Radio Four' Review published on Friday, January 28, 2011 David Hendy. Life on Air: A History of Radio Four. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2007. Illustrations. ix + 518 pp. $55.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-19-924881-0. Reviewed by David Simonelli (Youngstown State University) Published on H-Albion (January, 2011) Commissioned by Thomas Hajkowski David Hendy’s introduction opens with a pair of extreme vignettes that aptly capture the nature of the Radio Four audience. In May 1988, an elderly woman strode into Broadcasting House and opened fire with a pistol full of blanks when she could not receive Radio Four in Blackpool; more tragically, a vicar in Surrey beat his wife to death with his radio when he objected to someone’s musical tastes as broadcast on the program Desert Island Discs. As a loyal National Public Radio (NPR) listener, one sniffs at the idea that NPR could elicit the same response, no matter how demented the listener might be. To my knowledge, there is no true equivalent in any other Western nation-state’s culture to match the role that Radio Four plays in Britain. The founder of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Sir John Reith, declared that the entire service had a mission “to inform, to educate, and to entertain” (p. 400). In post-Victorian terms, Reith’s idea was to improve people through listening and get them to like the effort. While other branches of BBC radio and television have drifted off to serve each single aspect of that mandate, only Radio Four has kept a true balance between information, education, and entertainment.

ROZPRAWY NAUKOWE Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu 2018, 60, 118 – 134 Maciej Łuczak Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego w Poznaniu OSZUSTWO DOPINGOWE W SPORCIE WYCZYNOWYM WśRÓD KOBIET W LATACH 1950–2017 Cel badań. W artykule przedstawiono zjawisko dopingu kobiet w sporcie w XX i XXI w. Wśród sportsmenek sztuczne wspomaganie wykryto w latach 50. XX w. W niektórych krajach powstał system maskowania dopingu przez władze państwowe. Doświadczenie w zakresie opracowywania i podawania leków wspomagających miały laboratoria antydopingowe, m.in. w Kreischa w NRD. Stosowanie niedozwolonych praktyk ukazano na przykładzie NRD, RFN, ZSRR, Chin, USA, Kenii i Polski. Materiał i metody. Materiał badawczy został zinterpretowany przy użyciu metod stoso- wanych w naukach historycznych: indukcyjnej, dedukcyjnej, komparatystycznej i analizy litera- tury specjalistycznej. Do sformułowania ostatecznych wniosków wykorzystano metodę syntezy. Wyniki. Praktyki dopingowe miały miejsce w wielu krajach. Wnioski. W latach 50. XX w. zawodniczki – zwłaszcza w Związku Radzieckim – spo- radycznie przyjmowały testosteron oraz steroidy anaboliczno-androgenne. Później liczba stoso- wanych środków dopingujących systematycznie rosła. Na większą skalę zaczęto je przyjmować dopiero w latach 70. i 80. XX w.

Abstract The start of this project coincided with the birth of my first child, Evelyn. Becoming a parent revealed the connectivity in and among the relationships that were being made in, and often extended beyond, our home. This connectivity is analysed here in terms of relationality, or a focus on the complex aspects of engagement among self and other. In this research project, I reflect upon my own experience using the lens of relational environmental scholarship. I propose that parenting could be a praxis informed by such scholarship. Dualism is a central antagonist of relational environmental scholarship.
