3 Student Commencement Speaker MelissaBe ll

Melissa Bell graduated from Deering High School in Portland, and came to USM where she will graduate with her B.A. in Economics, plus a minor in English.

Bell was awarded a Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation (Maine HEAF) $1,000 Scholarship for the 2015-16 academic year. Her studies in economics led Bell to become a leader in student groups including rhe Students of Economic Interests (SEI) where she served as Vice President and rhe Students for #USMFurure, where she was a co-chair.

She worked for rhe Southern Maine Workers' Center as an intern in rhe fall of 2015, helping ro organize around rhe healthcare campaign, and has continued on as an organizer and member of the leadership ream. Bell was recently selected ro rhe Maine National Education for Women Leadership program, a week-long training program in June, which stresses rhe importance of women's participation in public life and developing leadership skills.

She also worked ar USM's Osher Map Library as a student cartographer and assistant to rhe education coordinator, helping with cartographic education classes for K-12.

A three-year member of rhe USM Women's Ourdoor Track and Field ream as a thrower, primarily discus, Bell was recognized in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 as a William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete.

4 Commencement Speaker GeorgeMitchell There are few people who have had as distinguished a public service career than George Mitchell. Appointed co the United Scates Senate in 1980 to complete the unexpired term of enator Edmund S. Muskie, George Mitchell went on co an illustrious 15-year career in the enate.

In 1988, he was reelected with 81 percent of the vote, the largest margin in Maine history. He left the Senate in 1995 as the Senate majority leader, a position he had held since January 1989.

Senator Mitchell enjoyed bipartisan respect during his tenure. le has been said "there is not a man, woman, or child in the Capitol who does not trust George Mitchell." For six consecutive years he was voted "the most respected member" of the Senate by a bipartisan group of senior congressional aides.

While in the Senate, Senator Mitchell led the successful 1990 reauthorization of the Clean Air Act and authored the first national oil spill prevention and cleanup law. Senator Mitchell led the Senate co passage of the nation 's first child care bill and was principal author of the low-income housing tax credit program. He was instrumental in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, landmark legislation extending civil rights protections to the disabled. Senator Mitchell's efforts led co the passage of a higher education bill chat expanded opportunities for millions of Americans.

In 1995, Senator Mitchell served as a Special Advisor to President William J. Clinton on Ireland, and from 1996 to 2000, he served as the Independent Chairman of the Northern Ireland Peace Talks. Under his leadership, the Good Friday Agreement, an historic accord ending decades of conflict, was agreed to by the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom and the political parries of Northern Ireland. For his service in Northern Ireland, Senator Mitchell received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor given by che US government; the Philadelphia Liberty Medal; the Truman Institute Peace Prize; and the United Nations (UNESCO) Peace Prize.

10 Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree Recipient MeredithH. Jones Meredith H. Jones recently stepped down from her post as president and CEO of the Maine ommunity Foundation, a statewide public foundation with approximately $430 million in assets. ince its creation in 1983, the foundation has awarded more than $220 million in scholarships and grants to individuals and nonprofit organizations.

Under her leadership, assets more than doubled, and the foundation engaged in a number of special initiatives focused on ocial capital, higher education attainment, civic engagement of baby boomers, and poverty.

Before joining the foundation in 1999, Jones directed training programs for the Maine Health Care Association. he also worked for the Maine Development Foundation where she co-created Leadership Maine, the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education, Educator-in-Residence program, and the Maine Policy Leaders Academy. Jones has worked as senior staff for a gubernatorial primary campaign, served on a gubernatorial cran ition team, and staffed the Maine legislature's Committee on Public Utilities.

Jones is a former VISTA Volunteer, ha served on the Winthrop School Committee, and has held leadership positions at the United Way of Kennebec Valley, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Community Development Advisory ouncil, Maine Philanthropy Center, Educate Maine, and Maine Women's Fund. Currently, Jone is a member of the editorial review committee for the Maine Policy Review, the advisory council of the Margaret Chase Smith Center, the International Women's Forum - Maine Chapter, and the community advisory board ofNonheast Bank. he chair the board of directors of CFLeads, a national organization of community foundation CEOs engaged in community leadership work.

In 2015, Jones received the Kenneth L. Curtis Leadership Award from Leadership Maine for her distinguished statewide leadership in philanthropy. She is the recipient of the Deborah Morton award and was recognized by the Margaret Chase mith Policy Center as a Distinguished Maine Policy Fellow. She is a graduate of Colby-Sawyer College and the University of Maine at Augusta and has completed postgraduate work at che University of Maine. In 2013, Jones received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Maine at Augusra.

Jones and her husband, Dana Murch, live in Belfast, Maine. She is the mother of two and grandmother of two.

The daily clothing of a scholar, whether student or teacher, was the dress of a cleric. Long gowns and hoods were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated stone buildings. The gown, hood , and cap designate the level of academic achievement of the wearer. Bachelor's gowns are worn today by all recipients of undergraduate degrees, typically with a flat square cap, and occasionally with a short hood. The Master's gown has short , distinctively shaped sleeves, and the hood is about 3 feet in length. Hoods are lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree. University of ouchern Maine hoods are lined in blue and gold, with additional colors to indicate the discipline of the degree. At USM, the most frequencly awarded master 's degrees are the following: American and New England Studies. White Business . Light Brown Education Light Blue Fine Arts . Brown Occupational Therapy lace Blue ocial Work Citron Nursing. . Apricot Science . Gold Music. Pink Public Administration Peacock Blue Public Health ..... Salmon Pink Our faculty members wear doctoral gowns with colorful hoods representing their alma macers and their disciplines. The doctoral gown is black or may be in the colors of a particular university. le also has distinctively shaped sleeves with three velvet stripes. The hood is very long and is typically lined in blue velvet to indicate the Ph.D. Caps may be the flat mortarboard which daces from the 13th century or the 14th century velvet cap. Only doctoral caps have gold tassels. The gowns worn by the USM Graduating Class of 2016 are made out of 100% recycled materials. The caps and gowns are the graduates ' to keep, but anyone wishing to recycle the gowns may drop chem off at the USM Bookstore table in the lobby, or in the coming weeks, at one of the USM Bookstore locations.

Eaton Millworks. The mace is being carried by Professor Michele Kaschub.

31 The University of Southern Maine Predecessor Institut ions The predecessor institutions of what today is known as the University of Southern Maine share a common vision chat is as true today as it was 137 years ago: provide an education chat transforms students ' understanding of the world while equipping chem with the knowledge and skills to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

In the fall of 1878, Gorham Normal School was founded to provide the region and state with well-prepared teachers. During the Great Depression, a transplanted Boston University dean led an effort to establish a college in Portland to provide further educational access to local citizens. These institutions in Portland and Gorham merged in 1970 and became the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham . The institution was renamed the University of Southern Maine in 1978 co reflect its role as a public regional university. USM's Lewiston-Auburn College, which fills a regional need for university education , opened its doors in the fall of 1988. Today, USM serves over 8,000 students and, as an outstanding public, comprehensive university, is dedicated to playing a strategic role in the social, intellectual , and financial well-being of the state and region.
