Archives Antics February 2021 Magnificat Monthly These Are Our Sisters, Part III: H.M. Sisters who Served as Principals/Presidents at Magnificat Sister Carol Anne Smith by Mary Cay Doherty Please click here for the digital poster This month we return to our exploration of Sisters of the Humility of Mary who served as Principal / President of Magnificat High School. Of the eight Sisters, we have peered into the lives of Sister Mary of Lourdes (Bernadette) Vetter, Sister Honora McAndrew, Sister Claire (Mary Pius) Young, Sister Ann (Mary Patrick) McManamon, and Sister Rose (Mary Aquinas) Schaffer. Our discussion today features Sister Carol Anne Smith. In the coming months, we will look at the lives of Sister Carolyn Marshall and Sister Mary Pat Cook. Sister Carol Anne was called to lead Magnificat as principal from 1981-1988 and again as president from 2007-2013. As we consider her life and service to Magnificat in this article, we will see that, under her leadership, Magnificat flourished. Sister Carol Anne requested specifically that whatever is described as accomplishments during her terms in leadership at Magnificat be credited was well to those who made the accomplishments possible. These include the faculty and staff, colleagues in administration, Fathers’ and Mother’s Club leaders and members, Advisory Board members and Board of Trustees members, benefactors, alumnae, Sisters of the Humility of Mary and, with love, our school’s always and beautiful students. Early Life and Entering the Sisters of the Humility of Mary Carol Anne Smith was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18, 1948 to parents William J.

  • A Tribute to Departed Colleagues
The Nightingale Tribute A tribute to departed colleagues American Nurses Association 2021 Nightingale Tribute Nurses in Memoriam On the Saturday morning of June 23, 2005, a meeting of the 2005 House of Delegates sanctioned the Nightingale Tribute as a way of honoring nurses at the end of their life’s journey. With the consent of the house, ANA adopted this tribute as its official ceremony for honoring nurses who are no longer with us. Nurses present at the house were asked to step forward to the microphone and prepare at the appointed time to say the nurse’s name and the name of the CMA in which the nurse held membership. ANA has thus instituted this “Nurses in Memoriam” book, which is displayed, here at, ANA Headquarters 8515 Georgia Avenue Ste. 400 Silver Spring, MD 20910 At every ANA Membership Assembly there will be a white rose and white candle placed before the dais. It is the custom, approved by the 2005 house that anytime the house is in session, the white candle will be lit and will remain lit until the house adjourns. American Nurses Association 2021 Nightingale Tribute During the 2005 house, Barbara Blakeney, ANA House of Delegates Chair, invited Janice Jones, President of the Kansas State Nurses Association, and Duane Jaeger of the Kansas State Nurses Association, to the lower dais to assist with the ceremony. Janice is the architect of the tribute and Duane is the architect of the poem which is included in the tribute. American Nurses Association 2021 Nightingale Tribute Nursing is a calling, a lifestyle, a way of living.

Carrie Dyer, Catherine Adams and Stephanie Korupp were unable to attend. Mike McGovern was present as our staff rep. 1. Updates: •Letterhead (Catherine) Catherine was going to have a mock up available; will need to wait until August to see what she’s able to offer. •Banners/new portable banner (Catherine/Carol Anne) Carol Ann has arranged to display the banner at the Wet Paint Auction on Sunday, July 13. We will get it from Catherine’s house to her in a timely way. (NOTE: Done!) •Portland Symphony, Ft. Williams Foundation and 250 Committee Partnership News (Barbara and Catherine) This subcommittee met again. The goal is to take a proposal to the Fort Williams Advisory Board and the Town Council in September. Corporate sponsors are currently being approached. Mike suggested that it would be best if all sponsor and host contributions were able to go through the FWFoundation. He also suggested that Barbara get in touch with Bob Malley in order to get on the agenda for the FWAdvisory Commission in September. Mike gave Barbara a copy of the Fort Williams Park Group Use Policy. A 5000 maximum number of guests was noted. • View Honor Roll of Donors
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS JULY 1, 2019–JUNE 30, 2020 Celebrating 100 Years DEAR ALUMNI & FRIENDS OF IMMACULATA, Enclosed is our Honor Roll of Donors for Fiscal Year 2019/20. As you look through the report you will see the names of others, like you, who understand how important philanthropic giving is to higher education. We are humbled and sincerely grateful for the depth of your generosity during what can only be described as an unimaginable conclusion to our Centennial Year. Thank you for your unwavering support of the University and our students, even as you face your own challenges related to COVID-19. Despite the disruption and uncertainties that this past spring brought us, I am happy to report that we are making progress towards our fundraising goals. As you know, the Parsons Science Pavilion Campaign is underway and I am happy to report that we have successfully raised 80% of the cost for this new facility. This milestone strongly reflects your commitment to excellence for our University. The Parsons Science Pavilion will be a game changer for all of our students who are required to take science courses. Our Nursing program is thriving and this new facility will provide our aspiring nursing students the labs and the equipment they deserve. As we look to the future, we still have much work to do, funds to raise, alumni to engage and projects to accomplish. We are about to enter the second century of Immaculata and I invite you to remain our loyal alumni and friends. I ask for your continued support and prayers.

  • Region One Strong
Region One Strong In order to prepare each child for what comes next, we must align vision, expectation, and practice. Region 1 Board of Education www.region1schools.org June 2020 Message from the Superintendent \Now is the Time We are living in a historic time and our world will change permanently because of this global shared experience. This may not provide much comfort to the graduating classes, when students consider all they are missing during this pandemic, but we have all been learning many important lessons. One thing we have known is that the past teaches us that most successful persons have had to face and overcome some form of adversity. Tom Hanks, the actor, shared with the 2020 graduates that they are “the chosen ones, because of a fate unimagined before they began this school year” and that all of us will talk of the earlier years in our lives just that way. “That was before the COVID-19…' the same way other generations tell time like, 'that was before the war' or 'that was before the internet.” None of us could have anticipated that our schools would close mid-year. The actions our schools had to make to prevent the COVID-19 spread caused a significant disruption in education, as well as to cause everyone anxiety and concern. We feel that we were as prepared as possible, but we still learned a great deal during this time. We learned that many students do well with virtual learning, while others did not find it to be helpful. We learned that virtual instruction could be conducted in real time (synchronous) and some could be conducted at a different time to suit the student and family (asynchronous).
