19 Shutout of No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes Produces Results

By John Frierson GeorgiaDogs.com March 8, 2018

The line was delivered by Georgia men’s tennis junior Jan Zielinski, “After losing so many doubles points in a row you’ve got to change standing at the baseline on court five Wednesday afternoon at the Dan something up, and we knew it was coming,” Montgomery said. Magill Tennis Complex: “That’s how we play ‘breakers in the pit.” The previously rock-solid and top-ranked (last season) team of Zielinski The pit is what the Bulldogs call the lower three courts, and for years and Loeb, who lost in the finals of the NCAA doubles championships and years and years one of Georgia’s greatest strengths as a program last May, were off to a rocky 3-6 start this dual season. has been its play at Nos. 4-6 singles — where the Bulldogs’ depth is often the difference. “We needed to change something,” Loeb said. “I thought M.D. made some good changes and we had a good day.” Right after Robert Loeb had taken the first set in his match at No. 6 singles, in a tiebreaker just like lower-court comrades at No. 4 (Walker Georgia also was struggling at No. 3, going a combined 2-6 as Alex Duncan) and No. 5, Zielinski let loose his line. Facing the No. 7-ranked Buckeyes team of Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce, who were 7-1 in dual matches, Duncan and Zielinski It was a cold, windy and wonderful day for the Bulldogs (7-4), who made their 2018 debut together a notable one, winning 6-0. in difficult conditions put together their most important win of the season, rising to the occasion in a matchup of two of the four teams in Of course it wasn’t their first time together, having paired up for a last May’s NCAA Championships semifinals. stretch in the fall of 2016 and won the Southern Intercollegiate Cham- pionships title together. 20 the country, moved up a spot to court four, Zielinski played No. 5 and Loeb No. 6.

Montgomery said the fast start in doubles was critical and the Bulldogs “took that momentum straight into singles.” Zielinski, getting the bundled-up crowd into it whenever he could, made it 2-0 Bulldogs with a straight-sets win. But there was nothing easy about beating the Buckeyes.

Three of the six singles matches went to three sets and Zielinski’s was the closest thing to a one-sided result. About 30 minutes after he finished, Montgomery, playing the No. 2-ranked singles player in the country in Torpegaard, produced maybe the best result of the senior’s career, a three-set win that was capped by a 6-0 third set.

“It was good,” he said of the victory, “and Manny said it best in the locker room: I didn’t play my best. Which I agree with.”

Given the wind, nobody was in top form; you’ll seldom see so many elite players shank as many balls as all the guys did Wednesday. And that’s where the grit comes in, where the mental side of the game makes such a big difference.

“I’ve never been good with wind, so today was a big day for me,” said Loeb, who has seen his share of it coming form Hilton Head, S.C.

While the players had to go out and play in tough conditions, Mont- gomery and Loeb both said a lot of credit for Wednesday’s big win goes to Diaz and the changes he and associate head coach Jamie Hunt put together.

“That’s just great coaching — that’s basically what it boils down to, his experience and how he controls the team and manages us,” Montgom- ery said.

A team with everybody back from last season got some new life breathed into it with some significant changes, and down went the No. 2 team in the country.

The Ohio State clinch from Robert Loeb marked the second in a string of three- straight from the sophomore Bulldog. Despite limited play due to injury, the Hilton Head, South Carolina native held down the lower courts for Georgia this season, spanning a 9-4 clip during dual play.

The most important piece of advice they could give to younger players is to focus on finding that balance between all of the obligations of social life, school and sports, and to work hard at each.

Although Martinez has seen only limited action in his career, his posi- tive energy will be missed. Montgomery has alternated playing at the first and second singles positions for the spring season and has been a fixure atop the Georgia lineup throughout his career.

Both players feel the season that the Bulldogs have had is a little disappointing. The team was able to achieve good success last year, but just weren’t able to see any consistent success this year.

Many of the life lessons the pair learned were during their freshmen years and mostly focused on time management and prioritizing their schedules. They’ve also learned so much from head coach Manuel Diaz on and off the court that it’s difficult to pinpoint one specific life lesson they’ll carry with them into the future.

There are a lot of things outside of the tennis facility that both players will miss once they enter the real world.
