Sustainability Innovation Solutions To Encourage Individuals And Businesses To Consume “Ugly Food" Shuang Hu, Ulink College of Guangzhou Anran Dai, Ulink College of Guangzhou Chulin Deng, Ulink College of Guangzhou Ziye Xiao, Ulink College of Guangzhou Wanying Chen, Ulink College of Guangzhou Summary As our group was trying to find a research topic, a movement caught our eyes. In that movement, irregular looking agricultural products are the protagonists, and volunteers organizing the movement are the directors. They are trying to introduce ugly food to the world. The concept of ugly food interested us, and we decided to work on that for our project. We would like to generate solutions that can promote people to accept ugly food. In researches we did, we found that ugly food actually is a big deal to our world. Ugly food is agricultural products which have irregular appearances. Examples include an uneven spread of the red color of an apple, 90 degrees-bent cucumber, or a carrot with 2 extensions at the end. We find them funny when we see one of them in the market, yet they remained a minority in vegetables and fruits we can buy. We automatically accept that all products should look similar, but they can easily grow differently only because that a rock in the soil is on the way of their extension or they are unevenly exposed to sunshine during their growth. We come towards the question - why can’t we see them in the market? On online surveys and offline field investigations, to begin with, there’s a little approach for the public to know about ugly food.

In this paper, I argue that the label disguises different ways in which a viewer can engage with it. In particular, food porn enables us to engage in cross-modal gustatory imaginings of a specific kind and an image’s capacity to afford such imaginings can contribute to its artistic merit. Introduction Pleasures of eating are at the center of a plethora of human activities and passions. An obsession with food seems to be on the rise in the early twenty-first century when professional food criticism has been complemented by foodie culture where sufficient enthusiasm seems to be enough to make one an acceptable participant.

The paths in this adventure would often diverge in many ways and I always tried my best to walk the path that was less traveled by. I believe that this has sometimes made all the difference. Along this weary road, I did not have to overcome and succeed the obstacles all by myself. In times of deepest need, it was always a relief to know that I could count on my friends, mentors, supporters, family and casual acquaintances. I have received countless advice and comfort during this adventure and listing all the people I am grateful towards would go beyond the scope of these pages. Yet, I do want to briefly highlight some people for their contributions in arbitrary sequence. First and foremost, my mother - the most important contribution. I am eternally grateful for your patience, believe and excellent nurture and education. Ingrid Meidl and Werner Frantsits, for your advice, encouragement and faith in me. • On the Backburner: an Analysis of Documentary
ON THE BACKBURNER: AN ANALYSIS OF DOCUMENTARY STYLES THROUGH AN ANTHOLOGICAL CULINARY DOCUSERIES A CREATIVE PROJECT SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ART BY ASHLEY MULLEN MR. CHRIS FLOOK - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2020 2 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION With the arrival of streaming content platforms, such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, an increasingly significant number of new fictional and non-fictional programs are being offered to audiences. Within this novel abundance of content, audiences can find many new documentaries (as well as “docuseries”). The increase in documentaries as a percentage of all new content on streaming platforms is a response to the documentary’s popularity among the average viewer (HotDocs, 2018). For instance, some of the most popular documentaries series recently debuting on streaming services include Making A Murderer (Ricciardi, Demos, Nishimura, & Deo, 2015), Blackfish (Cowperthwaite & Oteyza, 2013), Fyre (Smith, Purzycki, & Gabai, 2019), Explained (Klein, Rozansky, Mumm, Nishimura. Posner, Spingarn-Koff, & Townsend, 2018), and Tiger King: Murder, Mayhen and Madness (Chaiklin, Goode, Smith, & Stevens, 2020). These are only a few in the ever-increasing list of popular documentaries and docuseries appearing on streaming services. Among these popular films and series are several culinary documentaries, including Chef’s Table (Gelb, Fried, McGinn, & Weaver, 2016), Salt Fat Acid Heat (Cotner, Gibney, Lawrence, Nishimura, Nosrat, Offman, Suh, & Biraghi, 2018), and Ugly Delicious (Cotner & Del Deo, 2018). The interest in culinary docuseries has been substantial, so much so that in July of 2019, Netflix debuted its very own “Netflix Food” category and corresponding Twitter account (@NetflixFood), which advertises the streaming platform’s food programs.
