Over the years, summer has always been the most popular time to explore Scandinavia and the Nordic countries. Now, we see a changing pattern where winter is competing with summer to be the most popular season to visit the region. What's more, tours are increasingly being requested during autumn and spring - periods where there are fewer tourists, but the landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful. My personal favourite time to explore the region is autumn: the sparkling colours, the clear sky, and healthy air combine to make a fantastic experience. Scandinavia and the Nordic countries also present some very attractive products for the upmarket or selective traveller. For example, our new product Sweden Deluxe includes time in Stockholm, a night train to Lapland, a stay in the famous Treehotel with a visit to the Arctic bath, and a stay in an Art Suite in the Ice hotel. This luxury tour creates an unforgettable experience in Lapland. In this brochure, you'll find a range of tours for every type of traveller. INSIDER GUIDE Jana Bohn, manager of Haman FIT, discusses her favourite places in Scandinavia: Scandinavia really is an all-year-round destination, with an abundance of things to do in every season. I believe there is something for everybody here. It doesn't matter if it's the magic of the Northern Lights or the stunning hikes that drew you to Scandinavia, when you get here, you will easily find a thousand more reasons to visit again! BERRY PICKING & NORTHERN LIGHTS IN AUTUMN Did you know that Autumn is the best season to see the Northern Lights? The nights have come creeping back and winter is not quite there yet, so you can enjoy the natural phenomenon without having to spend the whole day in darkness! Also, it is less crowded than it is in the dephts of winter and locals will have more time to engange with you, should you have any questions. The leaves have already changed colour and illuminate the breathtaking nature in a golden glow. It is truly one of the most stunning seasons to visit Scandinavia. So if you have the chance, plan your Autumn trip to one of our beautiful countries. Another great thing about Autumn, is that you can participate in the berry and mushroom picking! Head out there into the wild, and collect blueberries, chanterelle mushrooms and if you're lucky you might even spot a cloudberry or two.

  • MS Serenissima
VOYAGES ABOARD THE MS SERENISSIMA MEDiterranean - NORWEGIAN FJOrds - UK APRIL TO SEPTEMBER 2019 2 www.noble-caledonia.co.uk Dolphins Small Ship Cruising aboard the MS Serenissima Ships of all different sizes and styles can make the selection of a cruise a somewhat hit and miss affair, and whilst some companies attempt to please everybody, we prefer to continue with our focus on small ships and to that end are delighted to have once again chartered the 95 passenger, MS Serenissima for a series of fascinating cruises in 2019. In many ways the virtues of small ship cruising are best expressed by detailing what you will not find on board. For instance, there will be no organised entertainment and no black tie events. What there will be is a warm and peaceful atmosphere in which you can learn more about the wonders of nature, culture and ancient civilisations in the company of like-minded people in comfortable surroundings and with a high level of service. Due to her size, the MS Serenissima has the freedom of the seas and can come alongside in small docks or drop anchor in any suitable spot allowing us to still seek out and visit the ports which the larger cruise ships are unable to access. Whilst on board you can listen to presentations from our onboard Guest Speakers and the informative port briefings from our Cruise Director and when ashore, explore the sites with our expert local guides. We will also ensure, whenever possible, that you have some time to discover the destination independently if you wish.

  • The Islands, Fjords and Wildlife of Norway
THE ISLANDS, FJORDS AND WILDLIFE OF NORWAY Norway offers the traveller scenery on an epic scale and there are few places in the world that compare when you consider the immense size of the fjords, the abundant wildlife and the timeless villages. All this and much more can be particularly enjoyed from the comfort of a small ship. Our journey begins in the Arctic Circle at Tromso from where we cruise south to experience the wildlife of the Vesteralen Islands and explore deep sided Trollfjorden. We continue to the Lofoten Islands, with their many small fishing villages amongst a backdrop of mountainous scenery that often experiences snowfall even in the summer. Our journey then takes us across the Arctic Circle and along Norways fjord indented coastline. Words cannot describe the awe-inspiring scenery that follows as we take in views of mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, valleys and slopes. truly dramatic fjords. Amongst them, Naerofjorden which has been included on UNESCOs World Heritage List. Our time spent discovering some of Norways most impressive fjords from the deck of our small ship promises to astound even A highlight for many will be the journey on the Flam Railway, the most jaded of travellers. Leaving Norway we call into one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world. The train Lerwick, capital of the Shetland Islands before we explore the journey provides us with views of some of Norways wildest and magnificent sea cliffs of Torridonian sandstone which rise from most magnificent scenery with rivers cutting through deep the Atlantic at Handa. Our final call before disembarking in ravines, cascading waterfalls, snowcapped mountains and Oban is to Tanera Mor in the Summer Isles, a perfectly scenic mountain farms clinging to sheer and relaxing conclusion to our journey which will have involved seeing nature at its rawest, cruising along rugged coastlines, witnessing vibrant colours and admiring prolific birdlife.

  • The Precambrian Rocks of the Telemark Area in South Central Norway XIII
The Precambrian rocks of the Telemark area in south central Norway XIII: STRATIGRAPHIC STUDIES OF HIGH-GRADE METAMORPHIC ROCKS EAST OF FYRESDAL JAMES H. STOUT Stout, J. H.: Stratigraphic studies of high-grade metamorphic rocks east of Fyresdal. The Precambrian rocks of the Telemark area in south central Norway XIII. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 52, pp. 23-41. Oslo 1972. Supracrustal rocks metamorphosed to the sillimanite zone in the Pre cambrian of southern Norway are correlated with their lower-grade equiv alents in the Telemark Suite. Evidence for a regional unconformity, possibly marking the hiatus between the Bandak and Rjukan Groups, is presented and discussed. James H. Staut, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455, U.S. A. Introduction The geology of the area immediately west of Fyresvatn (Fig. 1) was included by Dahll (1861) in one of the first reconnaissance maps of the Telemark area. Although at a scale of 1:400,000, the general distribution of rock types is accurately shown and has served, in part, as the basis for more recent compilations (Dons 1960). Werenskiold (1910) distinguished between the 'Telemark granites' and an overlying metasedimentary sequence now known as the Telemark Suite (Dons 1960, Fig. 1). Werenskiold's work represents one of the earliest attempts to establish a stratigraphy in the Precambrian of the Telemark area. Bugge (1931) was the first to divide the Telemark Suite into separate groups by defining the Seljord Quartzite and a supposedly underlying metasedimentary sequence he named the Bandak Formation. Wyckoff (1933) later worked in part with the oldest rocks recognized in the Telemark Suite now known as the Rjukan Group (Dons 1960).
