  • Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500-1700
Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Muscovy waged a costly struggle against the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for control of the fertile steppe above the Black Sea. This was a region of great strategic and economic importance – arguably the pivot of Eurasia at the time. Yet, this crucial period in Russia’s history has, up until now, been neglected by historians. Brian L. Davies’s study provides an essential insight into the emergence of Russia as a great power. The long campaign took a great toll upon Russia’s population, economy, and institutions, and repeatedly frustrated or redefi ned Russian military and diplo- matic projects in the West. The struggle was every bit as important as Russia’s wars in northern and central Europe for driving the Russian state-building process, forcing military reform and shaping Russia’s visions of Empire. Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 examines the course of this struggle and explains how Russia’s ultimate prevalence resulted from new strategies of military colonization in addition to improvements in army command-and-control, logistics, and tactics. • The Cossack Myth: History and Nationhood in the Age of Empires
THE COSSACK MYTH In the years following the Napoleonic Wars, a mysterious manuscript began to circulate among the dissatisfied noble elite of the Russian Empire. Entitled The History of the Rus′, it became one of the most influential historical texts of the modern era. Attributed to an eighteenth-century Orthodox archbishop, it described the heroic struggles of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Alexander Pushkin read the book as a manifestation of Russian national spirit, but Taras Shevchenko interpreted it as a quest for Ukrainian national liberation, and it would inspire thousands of Ukrainians to fight for the freedom of their homeland. Serhii Plokhy tells the fascinating story of the text’s discovery and dissemination, unravelling the mystery of its authorship and tracing its subsequent impact on Russian and Ukrainian historical and literary imagination. In so doing, he brilliantly illuminates the relationship between history, myth, empire, and nationhood, from Napoleonic times to the fall of the Soviet Union. serhii plokhy is the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University. Remaking Terra Cosacorum: Kozak Revival and Kozak Collective Identity in Independent Ukraine by Huseyin Oylupinar A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies and Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Huseyin Oylupinar, 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation was undertaken to test the premise whether the modern Kozak revival was or could be used as a platform by the Ukrainian national cultural establishment for renegotiation, reformation, and consolidation of national identity in post-Soviet Ukraine. Its primary aim was to observe the relevance and function of deeds, images, traditions, memories and spaces—that is, the symbolic sources of the Kozak forefathers in addressing the problems of national consolidation in the present time. Secondarily, it was to explore the tools used in communication, propagation and negotiation of Kozak identity in Ukraine today. To observe the functions of Kozak symbolic sources, the dissertation traces them from the late 17th century to the fall of the Soviet Union. To investigate the tools used for communicating, propagating and negotiating Kozak identity the dissertation examines modern-day Kozak communities, and Kozak physical and cultural spaces. Working on the presumptions —that post-Soviet Ukraine would require national consolidation, —that bridging the Kozak past into the present would constitute an essential process of national consolidation, and —that via Kozak symbolic sources nationally oriented Ukrainians would efficiently rediscover, reinterpret and regenerate the Kozak identity, an examination of the primary and secondary sources, and the original oral narratives gathered in the course of on-site fieldwork demonstrated ii convincingly that the Kozak revival has been an active and effective tool of the Ukrainian national establishment in negotiating and propagating national identity in independent Ukraine.

  • Features of the Architecture of the Main Church of the Don Cossacks
The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication - TOJDAC November 2016 Special Edition FEATURES OF THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE MAIN CHURCH OF THE DON COSSACKS Alina Alexandrovna Kulik Southern Federal University, Russia Olga Tikhonovna Ievleva Southern Federal University, Russia ABSTRACT The main Church of the Don Cossacks was the Troop Resurrection Cathedral, which was located in Cherkassk. Cherkassk was the Don Cossack capital and the center of spiritual culture till 1805. XVIII-th century was the time of transformation of Russian architecture, as at this time there were active changes of the Russian state according to Western European standards. At the same time the blossoming forth of temple architecture on the Don land comes. To this date, there are no accurate answers, when they started to build the first Churches on the Don, what they were like, what year was the first stone temple of the Don laid down, who was the architect and what was its architecture initially. The history of the Don Cossacks attracted and still attracts many researchers, and the interest is growing. Existing studies touch on the history of the region, peculiarities of life of the Cossacks and other issues. However, not many authors pay attention to the history of architecture, and in most sources the information differs from each other. To the filling of this gap, the architectural studies of the first stone Cathedral of the Don Cossacks are dedicated, the results of which are given in this article. With the method of analysis, comparing the data from the archives, and comparisons with similar objects, the archival research were structured, which allowed to establish the sequence of changes of shaping of the temple and its interior, to ascertain the date of its construction and to identify the stylistic features of the monument.

CEU eTD Collection Abstract This thesis concerns professional paths of official physicians in the 1760s Russian empire, focusing primarily on the example of a group of students recruited from the Kiev-Mohyla Academy to the hospital schools in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. The recruitments of students created a basis for interaction between the Medical Chancellery, the local administration of the Hetmanate (Left-Bank Ukraine)—the semi-autonomous territory where the Academy was located—and the students who volunteered to study medicine. The research compares the Chancellery’s vision of recruitment as embodied in the legal framework it created and the challenges it faced when it came time to implement these laws. It discusses the social and cultural considerations which pushed students to choose a medical profession. It also traces the graduates’ careers, their involvement into the state service as surgeons, “armchair doctors” and public servants.

  • What Has Happened to Ukraine Inertial Scenario for Ukraine’S National and Political Identity Alexei V
What Has Happened to Ukraine inertial Scenario for ukraine’s national and political identity Alexei V. Popov Abstract This article is a study of the evolution of the Ukrainian national and political identity in the context of the most important aspects of its formation, singled out by the author. The author’s methods are based on the principle of historicism. He analyzes the formation and development of political practices and the political regime in Ukraine in the 20th-21st centuries, and compares peculiarities of the ethnic, cultural and political development of Ukraine with that of Russia and other countries in Eastern Europe. Prospects for the development of the political situation in Ukraine are discussed through the prism of the geopolitical paradigm. The author points out that during the Soviet period there were factors that worked for the separation of Ukrainians from Russians and those that worked against it. In the post-Soviet period, under the influence of growing ethnic and civic nationalism, globalism and some peculiarities of Ukrainian political culture separatist tendencies prevailed. The current conflict in Donbass has entered into a smoldering phase, which is most advantageous to the Ukrainian authorities. He describes as unlikely the possibility of major changes in the Ukrainian regime. The more probable scenario, in his opinion, is inertial. Key words: National identity, ethnic and civic nationalism, Ukrainian political culture, Russophobia, Euromaidan, political conformism, military actions in Donbass, de-russification, limited political competition Alexei V. Popov is an expert with the Kiev Center of Political Studies and Conflictology (http:// www.analitik.org.ua/).
