The ma in bulk of the b uilding itse lf dates from 1695, just thre e years after the Bideford Bridge Truste es decided to develop a new street to be called B rid geland . Th e first hou se was constructed by Nicho las Gascoyne in 1 692-9 3, being the hand some brown brick building known to mo st as 'Dr.Candle r's'. Nich olas, who se na me sugge sts he wa s a desce ndant of Fre nch Hug uenot s who fled to No rth Devon, was a lo cal carpenter a nd his work was evide ntly go od enough for him to be granted a 99 ye ar le ase on the Custom House site on which he built himself a house. By 1760 B enjamin Gra nt was le asing the house and there is a note in the B ridge Trust minutes from 1778 askin g him 'to replace the Stone which some time since wa s take n d own from the Wall of the Ho use h e inhabits fa cing Bridgeland Stre et which St one sett forth the time the s aid Stre et wa s bui lt .' I wonder what happene d to th at? In 179 2 a new lease was g ran ted to T homas Grant, wh o was the Brid ge Tru st S teward , but he does not appear to have lived in it as by 1794 he was buildin g Northdo wn House (la ter the Co nvent). A decade later three sp inster siste rs called Morriso n were leasing the house though wh ethe r th ey ac tually lived there or not is unce rta in . A su rviving sister was still the lease holde r in 1832 when the build ing was note d as being the HQ of the local customs of ficers. The earliest surviving cens us from 184 1 re cord s vario us of these of ficers living here – as they are so recorded up until the 1891 ce nsus when 72 year old Thomas Martin, 'a gentleman,' wa s then th e occ upant. In the 1901 a nd 1 911 censuses Willia m Mart in a r etired build er w as liv ing here and it seems to have continu ed as a private house u ntil becoming a shop. People may recall the dry c leaners that were based he re fo r some ye ars before it became a public house (Tequ ila Jack's, Quigley's, Cu stom House etc). Today it has b een refurbishe d as a coffee shop, delicatessen and cinema (see below) an d enters a new stage in its long life. Pe ter Ch rist ie
