We are housed within the UCLA School of the Arts & Architecture along with the Hammer and Fowler museums. The central pursuit of our work as an organization is to sustain the diversity of contemporary performing artists while celebrating their contributions to culture. We acknowledge, amplify and support artists through major presentations, commissions and creative development initiatives. Our programs offer audiences a direct connection to the ideas, perspectives and concerns of living artists. Tune In is a four-day convening of artists, bands, ensembles and soloists from across the U.S., Canada and Latin America performing together in a grand gesture of cross-cultural solidarity that shares the time-honored tradition of music and poetry as a wellspring of resilience, resistance and inspiration. Every generation and era that ushers forth the human need for major change has an anthem or verse that call people to stand up. The Tune In Festival is chock full of song lines and rhymes from some of our most revered voices who speak from the rousing perspective of activating truth. I knew we needed folk singers and poets in the fall of 2020—long before COVID-19, the despicable tragedy of George Floyd and so many others and the escalated tension that befalls us during a “normal” presidential election, let alone this one. I started talking with musicians and poets across genres and generations, with a mind towards re-booting The Tune In Festival I had brought with me to L.A. after presenting it at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. What is the music we want to hear from others’ struggles for human rights and justice? What are the poets of today speaking to? What do we want to remind one another of and inspire us as we look to the future? Not surprisingly, Kronos Quartet was thinking along the same lines and were Photo by:Randi Malkin Steinberger developing a concert to celebrate the incredible life and music of Pete Seeger for the 100 year anniversary of his birth. “We Shall Overcome” is an anthem for the ages and across the ongoing struggles for civil rights that continue to be sought by successive generations. As Kronos planned their concert for CAP UCLA, I started working on building the festival around these shared aims. Tune In is the voice of right now speaking up and out for the unmet needs and rights of so many in the Black and brown communities in America since our founding. What these music-makers and poets address through their lives and experience are the anthems that say ENOUGH. Conjoined through successive generations of music, poetry and song, they inspire us all to push forward for the changes we have always known to be urgent. Tune In is also an incredible celebration of the voices of artists who can inspire us to rise up, tune in, resist, keep pushing and support one another as society’s other narratives try to push us in the opposite direction. This is the soundtrack of getting out the vote! This is the soundtrack of now! And it is going to be joyous! Inspired by their artful modern-day all-ages folk music and their commitment to accessibility, the Kennedy Center commissioned Claudia and Dan to create a theater piece for young audiences. Night Train 57: A Sensory Friendly Comic Folk Opera premiered in October 2017 and has been performed numerous times since. Their songbook, Dan Zanes’ House Party: A Family Roots Music Treasury, released in late 2018, has inspired conversations with parents, educators, music therapists and fellow musicians about how to work together to create a healthier, more musical and (ultimately) more festive society. While taking on these projects, Claudia and Dan have continued to bring their music to family shows, school workshops, community singalongs and folk festivals throughout the U.S. and into Canada. Becky Stephens Anyone familiar with popular culture will know their screen names well. Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, Chandler, and Joey. We probably know some of their real names . David Schimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, and Matt Leblanc. But do you know James Michael Taylor, Maggie Wheeler, or Jane Sibbet? Without these people the stories that the stars of Friends tried to tell would be incomplete. Gunther, Janice and Carol (Ross' ex- wife) weren't the stars of the show but from supporting roles they made the episodes memorable. They are hidden figures. Often overlooked and even underappreciated but absolutely essential to the story. I want us to look at two very obscure characters this morning that show us that it takes more than stars to make the story complete. Exodus 1:8-21 (NLT) 8 Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done. 9 He said to his people, “Look, the people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger than we are. 10 We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more.     The Story Nano Stern’s path as an artist follows richly crafted song lines laid by his family and his Chilean musical ancestry, and unites those with a sound utterly fresh and relevant. The confluence of recent student and environmental political events in his home country Chile and Nano’s rise as an articulate writer and performer have, much to his chagrin, positioned him as the voice of a newly politicized Chilean generation. The grandson of Jewish refugees fleeing persecution, Nano’s childhood was painted vivid by not only his own family’s musicianship but by the powerful legacy of the Nueva Canción movement lead by Chilean musical activists during Pinochet’s dictatorship a generation before. Legends like Inti‐Illimani and Victor Jara‐ who suffered exile and even death during these troubling times‐ continue to inspire Nano’s breadth of sound and emotion. “I am extremely respectful of the tradition,” explains Stern, “It is an enormous gift we received from the people of the past.” When only fifteen, Nano joined popular Chilean underground band, Mattoral, and thus was initiated into the fresh, new sounds and socio‐political pulse of the South American rock/punk scene. The thick rock‐energy of Mattoral, his classical and jazz training, and the powerful influence of traditional, Chilean revolutionary music make for something purely Nano. What has emerged is a powerhouse artist, brilliantly layering indigenous, African, and European elements into a sound all his own, and humbly bringing audiences to tears, to their feet, and to reverie with a singular kind of emotion and soulfulness unlike any other South American artist performing today.

His first musical passion was playing the electric guitar, in rock bands based in northern California. He later discovered concert music and has composed for orchestras, chamber ensembles, dance, and opera. He regularly performs his own works, including two electric guitar concertos and numerous solo and chamber works, and is also active as an improvising musician and performs with his band Big Farm.

    Composer’s Note —Bryce Dessner The music in Frame of Mind is an original composition by Bryce Dessner and in 2018, will be accompanied live by the Australian String Quartet. In 2009, David Harrington asked me to write a piece for Kronos Quartet for a Australian String Quartet performance in Prospect Park, Brooklyn.
