Advancing transformative justice? A case study of a trade union, social movement and NGO network in South Africa Matthew Hamilton Evans PhD University of York Politics October 2013 Abstract Transitional justice mechanisms have largely focused upon individual violations of a narrow set of civil and political rights and the provision of legal and quasi-legal remedies, typically truth commissions, amnesties and prosecutions. In contrast, this thesis highlights the significance of structural violence in producing and reproducing violations of socio-economic rights. The thesis argues that there is a need to utilise a different toolkit, and a different understanding of human rights, to that typically employed in transitional justice in order to remedy structural violations of human rights such as these. A critique of the scope of existing models of transitional justice is put forward and the thesis sets out a definition of transformative justice as expanding upon and providing an alternative to the transitional justice mechanisms typically employed in post-conflict and post-authoritarian contexts. Focusing on a case study of a network of social movements, nongovernmental organisations and trade unions working on land and housing rights in South Africa, the thesis asks whether networks of this kind can advance transformative justice. In answering this question the thesis draws upon the idea of political responsibility as a means of analysing and assessing network action. The existing literature on political responsibilities and transnational advocacy networks is interrogated and adapted to the largely domestic case study network. Based on empirical research on the case study network and an analysis of its political responsibilities the thesis finds that networks of this kind can contribute to transformative justice. -

Western Cape Jazz Legends
Western Cape Jazz Legends Foreword The Western Cape Jazz legends which unveiled on 17 March 2011 pays homage to the rich jazz heritage of the Western Cape. The publishing of the Western Cape Jazz Legends Booklet gives a wider audience access to an appreciation of the contribution of these musicians who often plied their trade under the most difficult circumstances and with very little material reward. The short biographies are informed by existing literature and interviews conducted with family members. The list is by no means comprehensive but it does indicate our resolve to give homage, to acknowledge, to preserve and to promote the rich musical heritage of the Western Cape. Documenting our musical history not only ensures that the impact of the role of these legends on the musical landscape of the Western Cape is captured for posterity, but also that their stories serve as a source of inspiration to aspiring musicians. This booklet represents an important step towards the building of a socially inclusive Western Cape. These Jazz Legends united us around our common love for music and the unique sounds of Cape Town Jazz. Let’s celebrate their achievement and resolve that we will continue to build on this initiative to acknowledge our musicians who created musical melodies which filled us with joy, often leaving us in awe of their amazing talent and with a deep sense of self-worth and cultural warmth. 5 /2012-13 The Paradoxical Utopias of Urbanites – Martyrs of Apartheid Chloé Buire Traduction: Laurent Chauvet, IFAS Abstract Cape Town, the first capital of South Africa, was built on spatial injustice. First a Dutch trading post on the Route to India, then a British colony and the seat of Parliament under apartheid, the Mother City has been deeply marked by racism. In 1994, Nelson Mandela’s election symbolised the abolition of State racism, but the political declarations concerning the break with the past were far from meaning the eradication of prejudices and memories of spatially engraved violence. Based on video interviews presenting the life trajectories of three township residents, this article exposes the escape routes along which the urban identities of Capetonians removed by force under apartheid are shaped. Their personal memories take on the form of a founding myth marked by a highlighted martyred experience, while trying to make sense of their daily lives through symbolic places and socio-religious imagination challenging “the order of things”. As such, the notion of heterotopia can describe the parallel worlds in which urbanites take refuge, in order to invent an alternative order enabling them to overcome the marks of domination on a day to day basis.
