Myron Scholes Is the Frank E
Myron Scholes is the Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, called back to active duty at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, and co- originator of the Black-Scholes options pricing model. Scholes was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1997 for his new method of determining the value of derivatives. His research has focused on understanding uncertainty and its effect on asset prices and the value of options, including flexibility options. He has studied the effects of tax policy on asset prices and incentives. He studied the effects of the taxation of dividends on the prices of securities, the interaction of incentives and taxes in executive compensation, capital structure issues with taxation, and the effects of taxes on the optimal liquidation of assets. He wrote several articles on investment banking and incentives and developed a new theory of tax planning under uncertainty and information asymmetry which led to a book with Mark A. Wolfson called Taxes and Business Strategies: A Planning Myron Scholes Approach (Prentice Hall, 1991). Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus Scholes is currently the Chief Investment Strategist, Janus Capital Group. Previously he served as the Chairman of Platinum Grove Stanford University Asset Management and on the Dimensional Fund Advisors Board of Directors, formerly, American Century Mutual Fund Board of Directors and the Cutwater Advisory Board. He was a principal and Limited Partner at Long-Term Capital Management, L.P. and a Managing Director at Salomon Brothers. Other positions Scholes held include the Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago, Senior Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and Director of the Center for Research in Security Prices, and Professor of Finance at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. -

GLOSSARY Advance A type of internal borrowing (temporary or long term) between fund groups for which a due to/from must be set up. Agency funds Resources held by the institution as custodian or agent for students, faculty or staff, and organizations. No institutional equity in these funds. AICPA American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Annuity funds Funds established through a deferred giving contract. Payments to beneficiaries include both interest and a portion of principal. Upon the beneficiaries’ death, the funds revert to the agency. Auxiliary enterprise An entity that exists to furnish a service to students, faculty, or staff and charges a fee directly related to although not necessarily equal to the cost of the service; managed as essentially self‐supporting. Balance Sheet Financial statement reflecting self‐balancing classification of each fund group, including assets, liabilities, and fund balances. Board of Regents A group of persons, appointed by the Governor, whose powers are described in the charter or some legislative act that establishes the legal identity of the institution. Also, the governing board. Bond covenant Agreement between bondholders and the issuer, representing the board action that issued the bonds and setting forth related terms and conditions. Book value method Distribution of income among funds in an investment pool by book value of the funds. Capital asset Asset intended for long‐term, continued use or possession, such as land, buildings, and equipment. Synonymous with fixed asset or capital addition. Capital expenditure Expenditure intended to benefit future periods; addition to a capital asset. Capitalization policy Statement of criteria to determine which assets will be expended or recorded as capital assets. -

We use the 2007 Unicredit Customers’ Survey, which has indicators of portfolio choice, financial literacy and many demographic characteristics of investors. We first propose test-based indicators of financial literacy and document the extent of portfolio under-diversification. We find that measures of financial literacy are strongly correlated with the degree of portfolio diversification. We also compare the test-based degree of financial literacy with investors’ self-assessment of their financial knowledge, and find only a weak relation between the two measures, an issue that has gained importance after the EU Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MIFID) has required financial institutions to rate investors’ financial sophistication through questionnaires. It provides ownership rather that indebtedness, but with restricted ownership privileges. It usually has no maturity date, but may be callable. The periodic payments are called dividends. Ranks below bonds but above common stock in security. Preferred stock is bought and sold at market price. 6-2 Common Stock - an ownership security without a fixed rate of return on the investment. Common stock dividends are paid only after interest has been paid on all indebtedness and on preferred stock. The dividend rate changes and is set by the Board of Directors. ARBITRAGE PRICING THEORY∗ Gur Huberman Zhenyu Wang† August 15, 2005 Abstract Focusing on asset returns governed by a factor structure, the APT is a one-period model, in which preclusion of arbitrage over static portfolios of these assets leads to a linear relation between the expected return and its covariance with the factors. The APT, however, does not preclude arbitrage over dynamic portfolios. Consequently, applying the model to evaluate managed portfolios contradicts the no-arbitrage spirit of the model. An empirical test of the APT entails a procedure to identify features of the underlying factor structure rather than merely a collection of mean-variance efficient factor portfolios that satisfies the linear relation. Essays In Macro-Finance And Asset Pricing Abstract This dissertation consists of three parts. The first documents that more innovative firms earn higher risk- adjusted equity returns and proposes a model to explain this. Chapter two answers the question of why firms would choose to issue callable bonds with options that are always "out of the money" by proposing a refinancing-risk explanation. Lastly, chapter three uses the firm-level evidence on investment cyclicality to help resolve the aggregate puzzle of whether R\&D should be procyclical or countercylical. HACKNEY, JR.* Professor powell paints a sweeping account of the relationship between the Enlightenment and law. I agree with the basic thrust of his argument, and I applaud his ability to make connections between the broad scope of intellectual history and developments in law.1 I have previously written about the interconnection between philosophical ideals and the development of legal- economic theory as it particularly relates to tort law theory.2 Through his extension of these ideas into other areas of law, Professor powell illustrates their wide implications. As Professor powell highlights, one of the principal tenets of the Enlightenment is the belief in rationality and the focus on the individual as the emphasis of analysis.3 This individualistic ideal is the foundation of neoclassical economics, which I have previously detailed.4 It is also the foundation for modern finance theory, which ascended with neoclassical economics and has a close relationship with it both theoretically and institutionally. -

Notes 1 A General Introduction to Risk, Return, and the Cost of Capital 1. The return on an investment can be expressed as an absolute amount, for example, $300, or as a percentage of the total amount invested, such as eight per cent. The formula used to calculate the percentage return of an investment is: (Selling price of the asset – Purchase price of the asset + Dividends or any other distributions which have been paid during the time the financial asset was held) / Purchase price of the asset. If the investor wants to know her return after taxes, these would have to be deducted. 2. A share is a certificate representing one unit of ownership in a corporation, mutual fund or limited partnership. A bond is a debt instrument issued for a period of more than one year with the purpose of raising capital by borrowing. 3. In order to determine whether an investment in a specific project should be made, firms first need to estimate if undertaking the said project increases the value of the company. That is, firms need to calculate whether by accepting the project the company is worth more than without it. For this purpose, all cash flows generated as a consequence of accepting the proposed project should be considered. These include the negative cash flows (for example, the investments required), and posi- tive cash flows (such as the monies generated by the project). Since these cash flows happen at different points in time, they must be adjusted for the ‘time value of money’, the fact that a dollar, pound, yen or euro today is worth more than in five years. -

His father, born in New York City, was a teacher in Rochester. He moved to Ontario to practice dentistry in 1930. Scholes’s mother moved as a young girl to Ontario from Russia and its pogroms (Scholes 2009a, 235). His mother and his uncle ran a successful chain of department stores. Scholes’s “first exposure to agency and contracting problems” was a family dispute that left his mother out of much of the business (Scholes 2009a, 235). In high school, he “enjoyed puzzles and financial issues,” succeeded in mathematics, physics, and biology, and subsequently was solicited to enter a engineering program by McMaster University (Scholes 2009a, 236-237).
