What Is A Martial Artists Most students get into martial arts to learn self-defense, get in shape, build confidence and improve self-esteem or motiva- tion. Once involved students realize that good martial arts teachers will give them much more. Students develop good char- acter and learn how to be mentored by instructors and parents. They also learn how to change and control their thoughts even when they don’t like to or want to. The value that my instructors have put in me has outweighed the cost of lessons. Furthermore, no one can ever take away the training that I received.

A true Martial Artist is not a perfect person, but they are always working towards mastery. They should be the same person in and out of the dojo, always improving ability, knowledge and skill while maintaining a humble and teachable attitude. Mar- tial Artists strive to stay physically fit and eat healthy. They are always looking for ways to help others and have a compassion for the people around them.

Black Belt Martial Artists should feel confident that they can defend themselves; however, the need to defend ones self will diminish because they can defuse a situation without a fight. True Black Belts will be humble, and always encouraging. Be aware of anyone who claims to be a Master by bragging about their skills.

Standards for Black Belt Excellence Value excellence Don’t settle for average Demonstrate consistency Pay attention to detail Remain committed Always give 110% Stay teachable Display integrity and sound ethics Be a servant leader Show genuine respect for others

Kaizen Martial Arts Center Student Oath

Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Traditional Oath

Sir/ Ma’am I will honor my family and my instructors I will train my mind and my body to best I can be I will use common sense before self defense to protect myself, my family, and my country Sir

9 In our school, you will notice many different colors of uniforms. The white uniform is the traditional uniform that is worn by all students at promotions and special events. The blue uniform is worn by Black Belt Club Members, while the Black uniform may be worn by students Blue Belt and Above. You will also notice different specialty uniforms for your Masters Club, Leadership and Demo Teams.

There are two required patches for all of the uniforms: The Shorin-Ryu Patch above the heart. The Kaizen Budokai on the left shoulder 1” below the seam. Students must also wear a uniform with the KMAC Logo on the back. Other earned patches are required on the white uniform, but can also be worn on the specialty uniforms.

Uniforms should be kept clean at all times. During the summer, Junior students can wear KMAC T-shirts during class. Also, we stringently observe that the belt never gets washed. The sweat on the belt is a reflection of the hard work a student has done, and a reminder of the time and effort to get a true Black Belt.

Rank & Graduation Information

24 Before the Test

Student / Parent Orientation & Beginner Party Parent meetings are held about once a quarter. Watch for announcements in the newsletter or on the white board. We will answer testing questions and going over general information that is handy to know.

Report Cards All school age students are required to provide a copy of each report card.

Conduct at Reports Attitude and conduct at home is just as important as knowing all of the testing material. Students who are disobedient at home are expected to set goals and begin to make progress. Changing habits takes time make sure to work with instructors to set appropriate goals.

Board breaking All students will do board breaking for their promotion. The cost of wood is included in your testing fees. All students need to try to break their wood however not breaking will not fail you at white and yellow belt.

Promotion fees Each time student’s progress to a new belt level there is a promotion fee. This fee covers the cost for the certification, belt, boards and awards. Promotion fees are due on the week before the testing day. If there is a problem with paying your fees you need to see one of your instructors as soon as possible! We never want to hold a student back from pro- motion because of money.

Dress All students must be in traditional dress for both testing and awards. The traditional white uniform top pants & belt. Your uniform must be ironed and have creases down the front of the pants and down the sleeves of the top.

Pictures Parents and guests are encouraged to bring a camera or video and take pictures for the awards.

Promotion Builds Character Make sure when your family members promote that you give them encouragement and praise even if they blow it. Per- forming in front of a people builds character and skills that will be useful later in life. Students confidence and perfor- mance will increase as the promote thru the ranks.

“I was very poor at school tests because I got nervous. Promoting thru the ranks in Martial Arts greatly improved my testing skills in school and my grades went up to all A’s my Senior year of High School.” Master Dale Burnett

25 Belt Promotions

Can I fail? It is nearly impossible to flunk your first test. Your instructor will not let you test if your not prepared to pass. Your instructors will make sure that you are ready for your promotion. Black Belts understand that you have not been training for very long and are going to be nervous. Promotion is a time to show what you have learned thus far and receive recognition for your accomplishments.

29 What Is A Black Belt?

I attended a seminar with hundreds of black belts from coast to coast. It was a fantastic experience; however, at one point things got a little heated over a specific question. What constitutes a black belt?

The thoughts were varied and passionate. Some thought that a black belt was a presentation of mental or physical ability. Others thought it to be spiritual maturity. Still others thought is to be some combination of the three.

Often people think of a black belt as a superman or superwoman able to leap a tall building in a single bound, while opponents' blows and bullets glance off their bodies. I think this picture is shaded by a few hours of watching "Enter The Dragon". What is it that makes a black belt? Is it punching and kicking skills? Ron Scanlon, an 8th degree black belt in Kung Fu San Soo, who has many instructional tapes on the market, is also confined to a wheelchair. Is he a black belt? I would say yes and a very good one.

How about the ability to defend yourself in any situation? Should a child black belt be able to defend themselves from an adult attacker? To answer this, I turn to Ginchin Funakoshi, the father of Japanese karate. "To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the highest skill. To subdue an enemy without fighting at all, that is the highest skill". In other words, it is far better to use your mind instead of your physical skills. The black belt child who runs away from an adult attacker is showing the highest level of self-defense, preservation. How about a student I know that began his study of karate at the age of 58. He is now 75 years old and a third degree black belt. Does this mean that he should be able to defeat any first degree black belt, no matter how old? Of course not. I am sure that you will agree that we should not hold a 72 year old man to the same standard as a 19 year old, or someone who is 7 to that of a 27 year old. Or someone in a wheelchair to a person with healthy legs. You see, that is the point, no two people are exactly alike.

No one is ever going to perform perfectly on a test, black belt or not. No one can defeat every other person in the world in a free fight. There is no perfect mold for a black belt. For me, the answer is this: In comparison with where he or she started, where are they now? Are they more controlled? More disciplined? More self-confident? If we can answer yes to each of these questions, then we know that the person is doing their best to improve their personal ability. We then know we have a great future black belt in our midst. To finish with Ginchin Funakoshi: "The ultimate aim of karate is not victory or defeat, but perfection of the character of its participants".

History

66 History of Karate Do The art we know today as “karate” (pronounced “ka rah tay”) originated on the island of Okinawa, presently a part of the nation of Japan. Okinawa is one of over one hundred is- lands of Ryukyu ( pronounced “ree you cue”) chain that extends from Southern Japan to Taiwan. To understand the development of Karate, one must understand some of the histo- ry of the island and it’s people. Since ancient time, Okinawa has been a crossroads of Asian cultures. This is due to Oki- nawa’s central location in the East China Sea, making it an excellent trade center for goods moving to/from China Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. A major root of karate can be traced to ancient China. Legend has it that Daruma Baishi (Bodhidharma) developed eighteen exercise forms to use of the Buddhist monks living at the Shaolin Temple. These exercise forms eventually became known as Shaolin Kempo, meaning “Way of the Fist”. The exercise discipline concentrated upon the art of learning to control and master the body, mind, and soul. Since ancient times, the Okinawan people had practiced a system of self defense referred to as Te, meaning “Hand”, the second root of modern karate. During the years of trade and cultural exchange, the Okinawan people were exposed to Shaolin Kempo. Over many years, the Okinawa people synthesized these two martial traditions into what we know today as ka- rate. The term was used as early as the late 1800’s and translates as “Empty Hand”. In the 14th century, during the reign of King Sho Shin, the private ownership of weapons and the use of armed retainers by lords were first prohibited. Through this nobility was able to gain complete control over the citizens. This fueled the desire for empty-hand fighting systems. During the 17th century, Okinawa was overrun and occupied by the Satsuma Clan of Japan. Okinawa was never to be independent again. The weapons of Okinawan samurai were con- fiscated, and they were forbidden to own, use, or carry any weapons. The edict issued in 1609 also forbade the practice of martial arts. Again, this was to completely subjugate the Okinawan people. Faced with the necessity of defending themselves and their people from oppressors and pirates, and having only their bare hands with which to fight, the samurai warriors turned to ancient forms of Te and Kempo. In those desperate years, they developed and refined the techniques until their bodies were as deadly and effective in their defense as had been the swords that were taken from them. Karate was taught in secret and was known only to the nobility. Where and how it was taught was a mystery to most Okinawan people, for to be introduced to the discipline of karate was to be marked as one of the most poised and trusted human beings and was an honor as high as any could be bestowed. 67 Samurai

For over 300 years, karate remained secret and known only through word-of-mouth on the island of Okinawa. Masters taught only to small groups, usually family members and rela- tives. Each family developed their own personal method of training, thus many styles of ka- rate came into being. Karate became a course of exercise valued for its health and character building. In 1875, the Satsuma occupation ended and Japan officially recognized Okinawa as a pre- fecture. The need for secrecy ended. In 1902, Anko Itosu, a master of Shuri-Te, gave the first public demonstration of karate on Okinawa. Later, Both he master Kanryo Higashionna (sometimes Spelled higaonna) introduced karate into the public school system. In 1917, an Okinawan school teacher by the name of , who had studied ka- rate in Shuri, Okinawa, gave a series of karate demonstration at the Butokuden (the govern- ment sanctioning body for all martial arts prior to WWII) in Kyoto, Japan. These Demonstra- tions could well be the most historic event in history of karate, for this was the first time that this fighting system was demonstrated outside of Okinawa . In 1921 he was asked to give a demonstration at Shuri Castle for visiting Crown Prince Hirohito. The prince was so im- pressed, he mentioned it in his report. This led to Master Funakoshi being invited to give a demonstration to the ministry of education in Tokyo, leading to the adoption of karate as part of the school system in Japan. After World War II, Okinawa was occupied by the United States. US serviceman, a long way from home and with nothing to occupy their free time, discovered karate. Those men re- turned home and opened the first dojo(s) in America. Thanks to them, karate has now spread world-wide.
