  • Roll of Honour Irish Athletics Champions 1861
Roll of Honour Irish Athletics Champions 1861 - 2019 Comments, additions, corrections to Pierce O'Callaghan [email protected] & Cyril Smyth [email protected] as at December 2019 The Irish Champion Athletic Club (Irish Champions AC) was founded during late 1872/early 1873 and organised the first Irish Championships on Monday July 7, 1873 in College Park Dublin. These championships have been held every year since and are the longest running national championships in the world. The Irish Champions AC, then foundered quite rapidly, being wound-up in 1880/81. Thereafter the championship meeting was run by an ad hoc committee in 1881, and by the Dublin Athletic Club from 1882 to 1884. After several abortive attempts to establish a national governing body for athletics, two were formed over the winter months of 1884/85. First the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was formed not alone to encourage and administer athletics, but also to develop and foster the traditional Irish field sports of hurling and football, as well as handball. Their action galvanised the existing athletics "establishment" in Dublin who perceived the formation of the GAA - insofar as pertained to athletics as a usurpation, and so was formed, very soon after, the Irish Amateur Athletic Association (IAAA). The distinction between the two rival governing associations is often explained in purely political terms whereas, in reality, the situation is rather more complex; particularly since both organisations embraced a quite broad spectrum of political aspiration, so that once the initial hostilities subsided the majority of athletes, whatever their affiliations, seemed to have no philosophical problems competing in the promotions of both bodies, open meetings as well as championships.

  • Fómhar/Autumn 2016 Drámaíocht/Drama
Fómhar/Autumn 2016 Drámaíocht/Drama Ros na Rún 8.30pm Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6/9/16 (omnibus Sunday) The flagship drama series comes of age this season (the 21st) and is one of TG4’s best-loved programmes. It has engaging storylines that bring the leading characters through awkward situations and extreme jeopardy. There are many laughs along the way, the kindling of romance and consequent broken hearts for some but not all. The coming season will continue to delight, excite and engage audiences with cliffhanging drama, deception, deceit, death and of course romance and humour. In its unique natural style, Ros na Rún deals with the many social issues which face rural communities in today’s world and excels in the exposure of such matters with insightful writing and acting. Following on from the end of season showdown in the woods, audiences wait to see the fate of Bobbi Lee and Andy and will be intrigued to find out if he was left for dead. Tadhg, the series lynchpin is seriously threatened this season but will he get away with it, or must he spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder? The season opens with much treachery and drama, and viewers will once again be glued to their seats as the season unfolds and death hits the coastal village, depriving the community of one of its long-time residents. Wakes and weddings are part of rural life and a Christmas wedding could be on the cards bringing the village some much needed romance and happiness. With tales of affairs, theft, controversial pregnancies, break-ins and break-ups viewers will have plenty to guess at and gossip about every Tuesday and Thursday night at 8.30pm on TG4 with the omnibus on Sundays at 10.30pm.

  • ADRIAN RUSSELL Journey, with Extensive Interviews from Those at the Centre of This Piece of Sporting History
‘The greatest achievement in GAA history finally gets its due:The Double is a singular triumph.’ Michael Moynihan ‘One of the greatest Irish sporting stories finally gets the brilliant book it deserves.’ Dave Hannigan A county winning both the All-Ireland Senior Football and Hurling Championships in the same year. It was unheard of in modern Gaelic games. Many considered it impossible. Yet, in 1990, Cork achieved just that. The Double: How Cork Made GAA History details this remarkable ADRIAN RUSSELL journey, with extensive interviews from those at the centre of this piece of sporting history. Billy Morgan and Larry Tompkins, among others, recount the footballers’ efforts to keep Kerry down in Munster, as well as their run-ins with bitter rivals Meath. Key members of the hurling panel like Tomás Mulcahy, Mark Foley and coach Gerald McCarthy remember the hurlers’ tumultuous road to success, from their shock 1989 defeat to lowly Waterford up to the classic ‘donkeys don’t win derbies’ Munster final against Tipperary in 1990 and beyond. Full of insight into these remarkable teams, as well as powerful and often humorous anecdotes, The Double captures an unparalleled year of success for Cork GAA. www.mercierpress.ie MERCIER SPORT 1 THE DOUBLE HOW CORK MADE GAA HISTORY ADRIaN RUSSELL PROLOGUE Midway through the second half of the All-Ireland hurling final of 1990, Croke Park took a breath and time slowed down. With Galway already four points ahead of an unfancied Cork side, and Galway’s Martin Naughton barrelling through on goal, a green flag would surely signal the end of the contest.

  • An Mhaigh Tír Na Nóg G.A.C. Notes (Week Commencing 31/08/09)
An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. Notes (week commencing 31/08/09) Trip to Carrigaline Over 100 An Mhaigh G.A.C. underage players, parents and other adult club members made the long trip south to Carrigaline last weekend to renew acquaintances with our good friends in county Cork. As ever, our hosts from Carrigaline pulled out all the stops to make this venture one of the most enjoyable ever for those who travelled. Several cars and a coach carrying our youth players and adult supervisors set off from the Moy clubrooms early on Friday morning. They stopped off in Dublin for a tour of Croke Park and a visit to the GAA Museum before completing the journey to Carrigaline. Our Youth Officer Marty Conroy issued the following report: “We made it back from Carrigaline safe and sound after a truly unbelievable weekend. The host club really pushed the boat out for our whole trip. We never had to ask for anything. Accommodation, food, football….it was all looked after. When we arrived in Carrigaline, the players made their way to their host houses to prepare for a long day on Saturday. “St Finbarrs of Togher, the former All-Ireland club football and hurling champions (the only club ever to achieve this), was our destination on Saturday morning to play two games at under 10 and under 12 level. Their facilities and the welcome they gave us were a credit to their fine club, and our boys and three girls really enjoyed their time there. We also received a lovely plaque to mark our visit to the club which can count Denis Irwin (Manchester United), and Cork GAA greats such as Jimmy Barry Murphy, John Allen, Gerald McCarthy and Donal O’Grady as former players.

This year our Senior Championship was played on a new (or was it the old) system and it proved to be a great success, bringing great freshness and a renewed interest in hurling to the Division. We were treated to a number of very close enjoyable games, culminating in taday's unique final pairing of Burgess and Kildangan. Both of these team have come from Intermediate ranks as recently as 2004 and 2005 so a new Club name will be inscribed on to the Frank McGrath Cup in 2008. Kildangan's two previous successes were before the present Trophy came into being in 1962. With little form to go on, 1 look forward to a cracking, sporting game and I wish both learns the best 01 luck.
