  • The Globalization of K-Pop: the Interplay of External and Internal Forces
THE GLOBALIZATION OF K-POP: THE INTERPLAY OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL FORCES Master Thesis presented by Hiu Yan Kong Furtwangen University MBA WS14/16 Matriculation Number 249536 May, 2016 Sworn Statement I hereby solemnly declare on my oath that the work presented has been carried out by me alone without any form of illicit assistance. All sources used have been fully quoted. (Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological.

  • WRESTLING with OR EMBRACING DIGITIZATION in the MUSIC INDUSTRY the Contrasting Business Strategies of J-Pop and K-Pop
Parc & Kawashima / Wrestling with or Embracing Digitization 23 WRESTLING WITH OR EMBRACING DIGITIZATION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY The Contrasting Business Strategies of J-pop and K-pop Jimmyn Parc Seoul National University and Sciences Po Paris [email protected] Nobuko Kawashima Doshisha University [email protected] Abstract Digitization has significantly changed the process for producing and consuming music: from analogue to digital, albums to songs, possess to access, audio to visual, and end products to promotional products. In this globalized digital era, actively embracing digitization would likely help enhance the competitiveness of the music industry. The rise of K-pop and the decline of J-pop clearly demonstrate the different results from whether to embrace or wrestle with digitization. The Korean music industry recognized changes brought on by digitization earlier and was more active in responding with effective strategies. By contrast, the Japanese music industry did not immediately respond to these changes but stuck to its rent-seeking behavior in order to take advantage of its larger market size and ‘sophisticated’ copyright regime. The implications from this paper is that business activities are the core element for creating and enhancing competitiveness of the music industries. • Concerning Museums in General and Art Museums in Particular
TRIBUNA DE INVITADOS Anales de Historia del Arte ISSN: 0214-6452 http://dx.doi.org/10.5209/anha.66053 House of Fire: Concerning Museums in General and Art Museums in Particular Ángel González García1 Surprisingly, museums were not included on Michel Foucault’s list of “heterochro- nies”, those places where, as he explained and proved in a famous essay, time passes in a different, unfamiliar way, the most radical example obviously being cemeteries. Museums are not graveyards, no matter what some avant-garde, museum-hating art- ists said; the resemblance ended when their works were accepted there, in a realm once firmly believed to be ruled by death, when it was probably just order, a certain order. Undoubtedly, the founding of contemporary art museums not only placated those artists –chief among them the Italian Futurists, adamantly opposed to virtually any survival of the past, from neckties to the city of Venice– but also made a substantial contribution to the revival of a declining typology. When, in the early twentieth cen- tury, Hugo von Tschudi and other German museum directors began acquiring works by the new French artists, a fierce battle ensued in defence of art in general, as if the absence of the most modern would make it inconceivable and not just incomplete. Im Kampf um die Kunst, a pamphlet published by Piper Verlag in 1911 to counter the opposition of the most conservative, or simply the most chauvinistic, German artists, was actively endorsed by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. A few months later, perhaps in connection with the same “battle for art”, the two artists went back to that publishing house to produce a strange almanac, Der Blaue Reiter [The Blue Rider], which was also the name of their association.

Pop Internationalism: Has Half a Century of World Music Trade Displaced Local Culture? Abstract Advances in communication technologies have increased the availability of cultural goods across borders, raising concerns that cultural products from large economies will displace those in smaller economies. This article provides stylised facts about global music consumption and trade since 1960 using a unique data on popular music charts corresponding to over 98% of the global music market. Contrary to growing fears about large-country dominance, our gravity estimates show a substantial bias towards domestic music that has, perhaps surprisingly,

In this second of a “double album“ on the music industry’s return to growth, we assess the risks and scenarios that could derail our thesis, from the risk of “windowing” and exclusivity turning off fans to an acceleration in declines for physical CDs and downloads that would come too fast for streaming to fill the void in the near term. Knights Across the Atlantic The Knights of Labor in Britain and Ireland STUDIES IN labOUR HISTORY 7 Studies in Labour History ‘...a series which will undoubtedly become an important force in re-invigorating the study of Labour History.’ English Historical Review Studies in Labour History provides reassessments of broad themes along with more detailed studies arising from the latest research in the field of labour and working-class history, both in Britain and throughout the world. Most books are single-authored but there are also volumes of essays focussed on key themes and issues, usually emerging from major conferences organized by the British Society for the Study of Labour History. The series includes studies of labour organizations, including international ones, where there is a need for new research or modern reassessment. It is also its objective to extend the breadth of labour history’s gaze beyond conven- tionally organized workers, sometimes to workplace experiences in general, sometimes to industrial relations, but also to working-class lives beyond the immediate realm of work in households and communities.
