Dr. Thomson first introduced me to field ecology and to the Gulf of California, and truly inspired me to pursue a career in ecology. He has a keen ability to recognize what is not only do-able, but interesting, in science, and to straightforwardly state the facts. Dr. Hendrickson en couraged me to apply for a Ph.D. Jim Brown gave me the CQurage to think big and to follow my heart in terms of ideas. He was supportive and an inspiration for me in terms of his own life in science. Bruce Walsh pushed me to accomplish things, to apply for grants. He had faith in me. Conrad Istock provided me with the opportunity to teach my own course, and ensured that I had financial support from the department, as well as offering insightful comments on my work and ideas. Judie Bronstein provided stimulating discussions on mutualism, field biology, teaching, and was generally accessible and helpful.
