How muslim can Muslims really be ? Within the Muslim world the concept of authenticity is usually coupled with questions of adherence to the canonical and historical. Despite the fact that the Qur’an addresses the individual in a very direct manner, little emphasis seems to be focused on personal authenticity within contemporary Muslim circles. Muslim societies are understood to be communally based with less emphasis on the individual (Lewis : 2007) and yet inner searching has been very much a part of Muslim culture though this may now have shifted significantly in engaging with, what is argued here, as the increasing mundanization (Drane : 2000) and rationalist approaches to religion generally and specifically to Islam. This work sets out to explore what, if any, inauthenticities have arisen within the Muslim discourse that might have given rise to this. In attempting to think through these questions, various contemporary manifestations of global management culture are explored, the development of rationality within Muslim intellectual history and contemporary theological positions within Islam are brought up for examination. Throughout these enquiries any resulting connection with inauthenticity and rationalism is sought out. Has this management paradigm reached the religious sphere? Has there been a McDonaldization of Islam? How can these be effectively countered? Much of the analysis and discussion that takes place is through a dialectical perspective between classical Islamic and existentialist thought. One of main aims of this research is to demonstrate ways of thinking through to potential personal authenticity despite the obstacles mentioned. This is a personal exploration orientated towards a personal authenticity in the context of the individual Muslim. It is not meant to be prescriptive nor exclusive but provide an example of working intellectually through to some form of authentic Muslim ‘beingness’. To hear the teaching of the Sage is to deepen knowledge and perception, to know the past, clearly to understand the future and the present, to grasp the origin of Heaven and Earth and the source of the myriad creatures, to attain to celestial principles and to see into the hearts of men; it shows us the road we have come by and demonstrates the return to Reality; The Three-Character Rhymed Classic on the Ka’bah th Early 18 Century Chinese Muslim Poem (Anon) Introduction This thesis sets out to demonstrate the process of arriving at an existential theology for a Muslim individual, namely myself, the author of this work. What is put before the reader makes no claim to be the way of authentic muslim ‘beingness’ but is rather an undertaking of a way among other possible ways. Though stemming from the subjective, any assertions are constantly examined against an objective critique. It attempts to demonstrate a Muslim reasoning towards authenticity, within the context of a bewildering plethora of positions vis a vis the Divine, the Prophet, Divine law, society, the other and finally the self. Despite personal affiliation to Islam and active participation within British, Dutch, Spanish and Moroccan Muslim communities for over forty years as well as extensive travel across the Muslim world, the balance between the emic and etic is held. The researcher is well aware of the dangers of the 1 ‘Candid Ethnographer’ dilemma (Fine :1993) entailing the researcher working under the illusion that, situated within the field of study, rather than an outside observer, what is reported is the unmitigated truth. No such illusion was present

(Rumi)2 Introduction This article examines the limits touched by one religious tradition (Islam) in its particular approach to an important symbolic structure within another religious tradition (Christianity), examining how such a relationship on the peripheries of both these faiths can be better apprehended. At the heart of this discourse is the thematic of love. Indeed, the Qur’an and other Islamic materials do not readily yield an explicit reference to love in the way that such a notion is found within Christianity and the figure of Jesus. This is not to say that „love‟ is altogether absent from Islamic religion, since every Qur‟anic chapter, except for the ninth (surat at-tawbah), is prefaced In the Name of God; the Merciful, the Most Kind (bismillahi r-rahmani r-rahim). Love (Arabic habb; Persian Ishq), however, becomes a foremost concern of Muslim mystics, who from the ninth century onward adopted the theme to convey their experience of longing for God. Sufi references to the theme of love starts with Rabia al-Adawiyya (717-801) and expand outward from there in a powerful tradition. Although not always synonymous with the figure of Jesus, this tradition does, in due course, find a distinct compatibility with him.

Mekanisme pelaksanaan konsep tazkiyah al-nafs yang akan dibincangkan dalam kertas kerja ini merujuk kepada amalan yang dilaksanakan oleh insan yang berupaya menyingkirkan penyakit berkaitan hati serta berupaya merealisasikan nilai-nilai akhlak mulia. Kajian kualitatif ini meninjau literatur kajian konsep tazkiyah al-nafs dengan menggunakan kaedah analisis dokumen dan berpandukan jadual matrik “Systematic Literature Review (SLR)”. Pencarian artikel diakses dari saluran jalur lebar menggunakan bit data MyJurnal, Scopus dan Google Scholar. Analisis sistematik berkenaan memfokuskan kepada isu yang melibatkan hubungan konsep tazkiyah al-nafs dalam pembentukan modal insan. Hasil analisis terhadap dokumen yang terpilih didapati terdapat 21 artikel yang memenuhi objektif dan kriteria kajian sebagaimana telah ditentukan. Menerusi artikel tersebut telah mengemukakan aplikasi konsep tazkiyah al-nafs untuk pembangunan modal Insan melalui empat proses yang dimulai dengan peningkatan keimanan, seterusnya, kawalan tingkah laku, pembentukan akhlak dan akhirnya melahirkan insan kamil. However, there are people who believe that after the revelation of Qur’an and after the advent of the last prophet, Muhammad SAS, there is no need of Hadith and Naql 3 any other person to come or to be sent by Allah.

Quarter Digital – Meron Benvenisti (2013) Archive and the Few spaces are more emblematic of Jerusalem today than the Western Virtual Illés Relief Wall Plaza, yet few people – including Initiative Palestinian and Israeli residents of Jerusalem alike – are aware of the Maryvelma Smith O’Neil destruction of the old Mughrabi Quarter that literally laid the groundwork for its very creation. For the longue durée of almost eight centuries, the Mughrabi Quarter of Jerusalem had been home to Arabs from North Africa, Andalusia, and Palestine. However, within two days after the 1967 War (10–12 June 1967), the historic neighborhood, located in the city’s southeast corner near the western wall of the Noble Sanctuary (al-Haram al-Sharif), was completely wiped off the physical map by the State of Israel – in flagrant violation of Article 53 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which stipulates: Any destruction by the Occupying Power of real or personal property belonging individually or collectively to private persons, or to the State, or to other public authorities, or to social or cooperative organizations, is prohibited, except where such destruction is rendered absolutely necessary by military operations.1 Two decades prior to the Mughrabi Quarter demolition, Jerusalem’s designation as a “corpus separatum” had been intended to depoliticize the city through internationalization, under [ 52 ] Mughrabi Quarter & Illés Relief Initiative | Maryvelma Smith O’Neil Figure 1.
