Are you thinking of buying an electric vehicle or perhaps are even a new owner. Borough Council has installed more charge points in the town centre and you can find this information at: https://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/vehicle-charging-point Or see this app to look for charge points further afield www.zap-map.com

ELECTRIC VEHICLE DRIVERS EXPERIENCE

An officer from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has recently started driving an electric vehicle and has shared her experience with us below: “I have had my new electric vehicle for six weeks now and thought I would share my experience so far for those of you that may be thinking of moving to electric powered vehicles. I have leased an E Golf and received my new car six weeks ago, I have travelled over 1,000 miles already. I have no charger at home yet due to delays from the operator so have been using a three pin plug (the car comes with two cables one for three pin and one for standard charging at charge points) and local chargers. Initially I was sceptical about the range of my car as it has in reality 130 mile range, though I can say this is no longer the case. I rarely travel more than this in one journey and have not run out of ‘juice’ so far. I have found plenty of chargers along my routes. I completed a 230-mile round trip to Somerset to see my dad on Father’s Day which went without a hitch as there were rapid chargers on the A303. I stopped off once to get home and enjoyed a coffee while I waited 45 minutes for a recharge to 100%. It is a different driving experience which I have adapted to easily, for instance I have become obsessed with regenerating power (this is when braking and slowing down, the car begins to recharge and gain mileage) so I would say it has impacted on my driving style for the better. The car is very smooth and comfortable to drive (very much like a normal automatic car) and I can say I will not be looking back.” 7 LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE THE NEW NORMAL

One of the widely reported positive effects during lockdown was the reduction in food waste. Many of us made the most of that time getting to know what was in our kitchen cupboards, planning our meals, making the most of our freezers or being creative with store cupboard essentials and leftovers. However, a recent study by WRAP, a national environmental charity, has shown that levels of wasted food have already began to rebound now that lockdown has eased, with one in four people sighting lack of time and busy lifestyles as reasons not to be able to maintain behaviours that help reduce food waste. The positive news is that food waste levels still remain below pre-lockdown levels and 70% of those surveyed want to maintain at least some of the food savvy behaviours learnt once life returns to the new ‘normal’.

8 WHY NOT USE GREEN WEEK 2020 TO COMMIT TO DOING UP TO THREE THINGS THAT WILL HELP SAVE YOU MONEY AS WELL AS REDUCE FOOD WASTE?

These could be: Remember, even small changes can • Checking your cupboards and fridge make a big difference! before you go shopping Once you’ve picked out your three • Organise your food in the fridge, pledges (or chosen freezer and cupboards by ‘use-by’ one of your own), date order why not let us know on Facebook (Smart • Making a meal plan each week Living – ), Twitter (@smartliving_ • Making a shopping list (and sticking hcc), Instagram to it) (smartliving.hcc) or email us at waste. • Using this guide to check your fridge prevention@hants. is set at the correct temperature: gov.uk.
