Visitors from Ascension, Carol Gilmore and Steven Andrews, were married in the Registry Offi ce on Saturday 18 January, a happy and memorable occasion for them as well as their guests. The bride looked exquisite in a lace and satin gown, topped with a vintage diamante headpiece. The bride and groom were whisked up to St Pauls Cathedral for a blessing before returning to town for a lavish reception at the Con- sulate. There was a vintage theme with fl oral centrepieces, candelabras and chandeliers. Guests were entertained with party favours and fare. DAPM Shows Confi dence in St Helena Budget Increase 2014/15 continued from front page The DAPM Aid Memoire sets out concerns for areas that SHG will need to look into and laid praise on work that has already been undertaken. DfID were supportive of Enterprise St Helena in their efforts. Within the document it reads, “The opening of St Helena’s airport brings with it the prospect of continued economic and social change for people on the island... Much has already been achieved. Much remains to be done.”

SAMS Radio 1 will be hosting a political show, next Tuesday evening , 6-7pm, with members of the SHG team who negotiated the agreed recommendations. See page 28 for full SHG Aide Memoire release 4 www.sams.sh Th ursday 23 January 2014 THE SENTINEL

Freecycle – St Helena

Freecycle is a new not-for-profit service set up by the St Helena National Trust and funded by the Community Grant scheme. This is a new way to get rid of all that unwanted clutter instead of throwing it away and filling the Landfill.

NO MONEY will be involved in obtaining items from within this group as anything advertised on the Freecycle board will be given away for FREE. This scheme works both ways as you might want to give away an item or you can let people know what you are looking for.

When advertising on our Freecycle notice board, located outside the Trust’s office in Jamestown, you must use one of the following subject headings:

WANTED – what you are looking for. OFFER –what you have to give away. TAKEN – to let any other interested parties who have contacted you know that the object has been taken.

Examples might be: - WANTED: Arm Chair or OFFER: Arm Chair. All negotiations for the items must be carried out between the owner and any interested parties, so advertisements must include a contact number, e-mail or home address.

Guarantees cannot be given on any of the products obtained through the Freecycle system. Everything will be given on an “as is basis” which means that neither the owner nor the Trust can be held liable for any defects or accidents that may occur from the product. The interested person can request to see the item in question to see if it is to their satisfaction.

The owner has the right to set a time limit for the advertising period, after which date it will no longer be available, or for the interested person to come collect the product. If it is not collected within the set time period given they can pass it on to another interested party or dispose of it. Arrangements must be made between the owner and the respondent; the Trust will not be involved in the exchanging or holding of any products.

There is no Fee or membership needed to use this service.

If you have any unwanted items that others can use: e-mail, or drop of your advertisement at the Trust today.

Damien O’Bey, SAMS The National Amateur Sports Association St Hel- ON TRIAL ena (NASAS) trials for a place on the shooting team to represent St Helena at the Glasgow Common- wealth Games continued on Saturday 18 January. Aiming for a place Under the orders of Chairman of the Jamestown Ri- fl e Club, Pat Henry, four shooters took to the range for three 20 minute rounds of shooting each. All shooters shot 60 competitive rounds, with unlim- at Commonwealth ited sighters. Simon Henry (579.4) and Jordie Andrews (571.6) were the fi rst to shoot. Simon, dropping 5.7 from Games, Glasgow the previous round, and Jordie, making an 11.8 point improvement. The next trial will be held at the HTH Rifl e Club with the shooters returning to the Jamestown rifl e club for the fi nal shoot. “We’ve arrived at this situation because, of the in- creased interest in shooting,” said Eric Benjamin, Chairman of NASAS. “Currently, the number of people wishing to represent St Helena in shooting at the Glasgow games outweighs the number of po- sitions available on the team.” Having met with all of the shooters interested in competing at this year’s games, the decision was made to host trials. “It’s not the fi rst time we have hosted trials,” said Eric. “Once there was a big interest in swimming and we hosted trials for that.” The increased interest in shooting is, no doubt, a direct result of the success St Helena shooters ex- perienced at the Natwest Small Island Games in Bermuda. Carlos Yon and Simon Henry picked up medals for shooting, with the latter securing St Hel- ena’s fi rst ever gold medal. As is with most sports, to continue being success- ful and to make the step to the next level, shooting requires an improvement in facilities and training. Simon’s visit to the Island has helped with training, but the Island still doesn’t have a 50m rifl e range. “There are plans to have a 50m range at Francis Plain,” said Eric, “but, we’re awaiting feedback from Lands department.” With the date of the games looming near, has there been interest in representing St Helena in other sports? “There has been some interest shown in swimming,” replied Eric, “and we’ve also received expressions of interest from a few of our players.” Patrick Young and Chelsea Benjamin have signed up for the shooting trials, and will complete their trials when they return to St Helena.
