The conclusions of the report then makes recommendations for any further phases of assessment where considered necessary. The site is represented by an approximately 1.0 Ha area of land presently utilised as an educational facility. 1.2 Aims and Objectives The aim of this report is to: • Review existing environmental, geotechnical and historical information relating to the site; • Develop and rationalise risks associated with potential land contamination; • Provide conclusions as to the perceived geo-environmental condition of the site with respect to ground related risks; • Make recommendations for any subsequent investigations deemed necessary. 1.3 Information Limitation This report has been prepared using information obtained from recognised and published historical and environmental information sources. Nottinghamshire County Council has not independently validated the information supplied to it in the preparation of this report and is not liable for any errors or omissions in the data supplied. 1.4 Information Sources The following sources of information have been used in the preparation of this desk study; • Landmark - Envirocheck Report - Sept 2014 (Appendix 1) • Coal Authority Ground Stability Report; Sept 2014 (Appendix 2) • British Geological Survey Maps; 126 of Nottingham, Solid & Drift (1972) • Client information, Sept 2014 • Site walkover conducted by a NCC Representative, Nov 2014 P.Y.BE.28909.01/Flintham Primary School, Flintham -Contamination Appraisal 4 2.0 SITE APPRAISAL Within the following sections information relevant to the sites location within the local landscape, potential sources of contamination and relevant receptors are assessed to enable a preliminary assessment of potential contamination risk associated with the proposed development. 2.1 Site Location The site lies at the north-western fringe of Flintham Village, approximately 9.8km to the south-west of Newark, 18km north-east of Nottingham City Centre, at NGR 474110/346140 (Figure 1). The site occupies a road side location, with Inholms Road to the west. The school is located within a rural residential area with housing surrounding the school site to the west, south and east beyond areas of agricultural and parkland which surround the school site. A cemetery lies to the west of the site, beyond Inholms Road. Figure 1; Site Location 2.2 Site Description The school is located on generally level ground with a slight fall from the north-west to south-east across the site (Figure 2). The site represents a single storey, CLASP constructed Primary School facility originally built in the 1970’s, comprising classrooms, offices, kitchen and heating system/boiler room. Since its original construction the school does not appear to have been significantly added to and/or extended over its lifespan, beyond the addition of 2 No. temporary classrooms located to the north of the main school buildings. P.Y.BE.28909.01/Flintham Primary School, Flintham -Contamination Appraisal 5 Figure 2; Existing Site Layout Access to the Primary School is off of Inholms Road to the west, with a vehicular access road to the north-west leading to a bituminous surfaced carpark to the north of the facility and separate pedestrian access to the south-west. A further bituminous hardstanding play area lies to the south-east of the school buildings, representing a school playground. The school buildings are CLASP built, single storey and double storey, flat roofed structures representing classrooms and offices, with a kitchen, and a heating system/boiler room located to the north. The school was originally built with an oil fuelled heating system which has since been converted to electricity, with solar panels on the roof and air blowers within the classrooms. Extensive playing fields lie to the south-east of the main school buildings. 2.3 Ownership The land is presently owned by Nottinghamshire County Council, for further information with regard to issues of ownership please contact; Nottinghamshire County Council, Property Resources Department, County Hall, West-Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 7QP. Early Triassic, Mercia Mudstone Group; Sidmouth Mudstone Formation; Edwalton Member underlie the majority of the site to the north-west composed of Mudstone and Siltstone, red-brown and greenish grey, with beds of indurated, variably dolomitic siltstone and very fine-grained sandstone common in the lower half; finely disseminated gypsum common in upper half. The south-east of the site is underlain by subordinate Dolomitic Siltstone of the same Formation. Drift & Superficial; There are no recorded drift or superficial deposits on-site. Fault Lines; There are 5 No. identified faultlines within potential influencing distance of the site. The nearest lies approximately 175m to the north trending in a north- westerly to south-easterly orientation, with 2 No. further faults, approximately 490m P.Y.BE.28909.01/Flintham Primary School, Flintham -Contamination Appraisal 7 and 600m to the north-east, displaying a similar orientation. 2 No. further faultlines lie to the south (orientated west to east) and south-west (orientated north-west to south- east) at distances of 475m and 690m respectively. At these distances it is deemed unlikely that the majority of these features would affect the school site; however the fault to the north could potentially extend southward towards the school site itself. 2.5 Ground & Surface Waters • The EA Groundwater Vulnerability map indicates the site to be underlain by strata designated as Non -
