SERVICE RELATED RESEARCH – FIRST WAVE As Artistic Director of the First Wave program in the Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives, Walker facilitates the collaborative process toward the development of works grounded in the performance and aesthetic cultural manifestations of the Hip Hop Generation – as defined by Jeff Chang “Cant Stop, Wont Stop” and continuous redefinition by First Wave Scholars. The work is formulated in First Wave Workshop, First Wave Collaborative Arts Workshop and First Wave Collaborative Arts Performance Lab, sequential courses developed by Walker, which help students navigate their own voices in contemporary and experimental theatre through physical devising, choreographic, and movement studies approaches. The work borders on theater, physical theater and contemporary concert dance, while maintaining its relevance through the lens of Hip Hop. The academic and artistic sides of the program are housed in the Dance Department, while community outreach and service learning activities are partnered with faculty in African American Studies. First Wave Hip Hop Theater Ensemble has emerged as a pioneering collective of spoken word poets, MCs, dancers, singers, actors, and hip hop artists attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison as scholarship students. The ensemble is regarded as leading voice on the international hip-hop theater scene bringing high energy, social consciousness, and regard for the personal narrative and culture as points of engagement with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
