More recently drip irrigation has come into increasing use in many other areas, including California’s coastal valleys and the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. Growers in some of these areas encounter high soil salinity caused either by irrigation with saline water (in the coastal valleys) or upward flow of saline ground water (in many parts of the San Joaquin Valley). Drip irrigation has the potential to increase crop yields with less irrigation water, and under saline conditions it has additional advantages over furrow and sprinkle irrigation systems. First, drip causes no foliar accumulation of salts during irrigation. Second, soil in the wetted area around emitters is mostly leached of salts, and that is often where root density is the highest, particularly for row crops. Third, high-frequency drip irrigation applications can maintain a relatively constant soil water content and soil salinity level over time near the drip lines. A disadvantage of drip irrigation is that salt accumulates near the periphery of the wetted area. This salt accumulation can be a matter of concern if the emitter placement does not coincide reasonably well with the location of the plant row, particularly for crops that are sensitive or moderately sensitive to soil salinity. Salt accumulation above buried drip lines also is a concern. Drip irrigation has been successful in the saline soils of the San Joaquin Valley. Experiments in commercial fields have proven subsurface drip irrigation of processing tomatoes to be a highly profitable practice (Hanson and May 2003, 2004), but if you want to reap the benefits of subsurface drip, you must also implement adequate salinity control. In this publication, we present guidelines for controlling salinity under drip irrigation. During the next 10 years, groundwater water table depth will range between 1.33 and 1.76 m. and remains lower than that of the root zone (0.6 m). Therefore, groundwater table will not pose problems as long as we keep the same management conditions during this period. Moreover, the simulation of drainage system depth variation impacts on root zone salinity indicates that a decrease of drainage lines depth does not affect root zone salinity which remains constant (4.94 dS/m and 3.68 dS/m respectively during the first season and the second season). Regarding groundwater table depth, it is noted that there is a variation for each drainage lines depth variation and groundwater level is ranging from 1.26 to 0.26 m and 1.76 to 0.76 m during the first season and the second season respectively. Thus, optimum drainage lines depth corresponds to that for which salinity and groundwater level have acceptable values not threatening crops and generating minimum drainage flow.

The irrigation hydraulic model simulates flow in a furrow irrigation system using the analytically solved zero-inertial overland flow equations and 1D-Green-Ampt, 2D-Fok, and Kostiakov-Lewis infiltration equations. Performance of the sediment transport model wasevaluatedforbareandcroppedfurrowfields.Theresultsindicated that the sediment transport model can predict the initial sediment rate adequately, but the simulated sediment rate was less accurate for the later part of the irrigation event.

In areas with a shallow water table and thin vadose zone, low oxygen concentrations and sufficient DOC concentrations are conducive to N2 production. Results support the hypothesis that in aquifers without a significant supply of 1 sediment-bound reducing potential, vadose zone thickness exerts an important control of the extent of N2 production. Since quantification of excess N2 relies on knowledge of equilibrium N2 concentration at recharge, calculated based on temperature at recharge, we further identify several features, such as land use and cover, seasonality of recharge, and climate change that should be considered to refine estimation of recharge temperature, its deviation from mean annual air temperature, and resulting deviation from expected equilibrium gas concentrations.

Due to the importance of the problem and the complex hydro-chemical processes involved in salinity fate and transport, a physically-based spatially-distributed numerical model is needed to assess soil and groundwater salinity at the regional scale. Although several salinity transport models have been developed in recent decades, these models focus on salt species at the small scale (i.e. soil profile or field), and no attempts thus far have been made at simulating the fate, storage, and transport of individual interacting salt ions at the regional scale within a river basin.

A. Faculty of Water Sciences, Shahid Chamran University, Ahvaz, I. R. Iran. Accepted 9 May, 2011 Salinization of soil is a major problem in arid and semi-arid regions with saline shallow water table. This is influenced by climate, soil type, crop, irrigation water quality and management practice, depth of water table and salinity of the water table. The objective of this study was the assessment of evaporation and salinization of bare soil profile with various water table depths including 300, 500 and 800 mm by saline groundwater (3 g NaCl/L + 3.5 g CaCl2/l). In this research we were monitoring amount of evaporation from bare soil, and observing profiles of soil water and salinity over periods of up to 80 days. The experiments started on April, 10th, 2010. Results showed that, salts mainly accumulated in the soil surface and volume of evaporation from bare soil in lower water table depth (D = 300 mm) is greater than other lysimeters (D = 500 and 800 mm), and salt accumulation in this lysimeter was higher than others. After 80 days, amount of salinity (ECe) in soil surface was 83.84, 65.76 and 24.05 dS/m, for D = 300, 500 and 800 mm, respectively.

Important multiphase processes include the transport of gases, nonaqueous liquids, and solid particles. Numerous means are available for determination of unsaturated conditions and properties, both measurement (of moisture state, water retention, and dynamic characteristics) and through various formulas and models that are mostly empirical in nature, but in some cases incorporating insight into unsaturated-zone physical processes. Applications to practical problems include models and techniques relating to distributions of water and energy, fluxes at the land surface, inputs, outputs, and fluxes within the unsaturated zone, all of which are frequently complicated by heterogeneity and preferential flow. Further scientific advance requires new measurement techniques and theoretical constructs that more adequately represent the important physical processes within practical modeling schemes.
