Making a difference TM. 0ver 2700 copies delivered quarterly Crosspool News — crosspool.info Editor Ian Hague In order to meet government housing targets, Sheffield Council has outlined plans to build new homes on Lydgate Reservoir in Crosspool, Hadfield Service Reservoir in Crookes and Canterbury Crescent in Fulwood. The Lydgate Reservoir is located at the top of Evelyn Road, a quiet cul-de-sac of Ryegate Cres. It is thought that once the reservoir has been decommissioned, York- shire Water will market the site sometime between 2017 or 2022. One Evelyn Road resident, David Smithson, said: “If this pleasant and quiet cul-de-sac were to be the sole access to this site. the prospects of an unacceptable increase in traffic, and the resultant noise pollution, would have detrimental consequence on me and my neighbours’ health and wellbeing. Twenty new dwellings would probably mean thirty or more cars added to usage of the road. These sites are three of eighteen in Sheffield earmarked as part of a strategy to build 1,110 new homes. The council is asking for residents and businesses to comment, on the plans for potential new housing, before the 27th February 2012. People can view the proposals/plans at libraries and First Point offices and at www.sheffield.gov.uk/sdfconsult. Page 4 Crosspool Clarion AN INSPIRATION Sheffield-born pharmacist and entrepreneur ANDREW DUCKENFIELD who, during the last 20 years, built up several chains of pharmacies in the region, has just recently opened his fifth branch of his Priceless Discount Store chain in Chapeltown. His Crosspool pharmacy is just one of two in the city, the other being at Greenhill, hence the name Green Cross Chemists Limited. Andrew, who lives in wild and beautiful Bradfield Dale with Deborah and their two teenage daughters, said that when he was a child growing up, he watched his father work incredibly hard, up to seven days a week in a factory, working as much overtime as possible just to give his family a decent standard of living. Being made redundant, in the twilight of his working life, his father was robbed of a comfortable retirement. This made Andrew determined never to be a faceless 'wage slave' for a large, uncaring corporation. Andrew was inspired professionally by Tim Astill, a former chairman of the National Pharma- ceutical Association (UK), who died in 1996. He was a true leader, always inspiring, full of fun and never lost for words. Stephen Fry inspires Andrew in his personal life to strive to improve his general knowledge and the use and application of the English language. The best piece of advice he ever received was, “Failure is not falling down: failure is refusing to get up”. As well as enjoying warmth, blue skies, great food, companionship and love with his family when at his home in southern Spain, Andrew likes nothing more than to read a good book or watch a film. His favourite book is John lrving’s, A Prayer for Owen Meany, most unusual and thought provoking with an unexpected ending. His favourite film is Dr Zhivago, “Just beautiful”. Andrew loves living in Sheffield, and being so close to the fantastic beauty of the Peak District is a great treat. But really, Sheffield is all about the people: stoic, determined, friendly and funny. Andrew has worked and lived here all his life and says he could not have achieved what little he has in life anywhere else but here, his home.
