SUPPORT RACE INFORMATION

MALAYSIA CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES(MCS)

The Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) is a national racing series promoted and organised by Sepang International Circuit (SIC) as an initiative to promote and develop the sports in Malaysia along with the Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK).

While the MCS is for the four-wheel category, MSBK is for the two-wheel enthusiasts with both series open to competitors outside Malaysia including as far as Australia and Europe; making both MCS and MSBK key motorsports events in the region. Both series originated from the old Malaysian Super Series (MSS) championship, which was introduced in 2002 – three years after Formula 1 first came into the Malaysian shores as SIC took advantage of the renewed interest in motorsports amongst Malaysians. The series was rebranded as the MCS and the MSBK respectively in 2015 in an effort by the organizer to inject further interest and excitement into the series.

Drawing Malaysia’s top drivers and racing teams, the MCS runs the Touring Production Championship for production cars above 1900cc onwards and a Malaysian Touring Car (MTC) championship for the 1600cc class.

Like previous years, the MCS runs five rounds of the competition. The 2017 calendar is as follows:

- Round 1: 8 - 12 MARCH, 2017 - Round 2: 5 - 9 APRIL, 2017 - Round 3: 5 - 7 MAY, 2017 - Round 4: 19 - 23 JULY, 2017 - Round 5: 16 - 20 AUGUST, 2017

The race calendar is developed with inputs from participating teams and drivers as well as taking into account other racing series in the region as the MCS are run with prominent racing series incorporated in the programme including series like the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia, Asian Le Mans Sprint Cup, Formula Masters Series, Caterham Championship, Asia Classic Car Challenge and the Touring Car Series in Asia by IMSP.

All races were telecast live this season via on-line through live streaming at SIC’s official Facebook page for fans worldwide to follow the actions.

This season’s MCS was concluded with 19-year Mitchell Cheah of N1 Racing being crowned as the new Touring Production class champion and the Malaysian-Australian partnership of Nick Mah and Chris O’Shannessy winning the Malaysian Touring Car championship.

The teams and drivers competed in four rounds of two one-hour endurance race in four weekends with the final round made more challenging as they competed in a 300-km endurance race of 54 laps around the 5,543-meter track.

Full details and round-by-round results are provided at SIC’s official website at www.sepangcircuit.com.

F4 SEA INAUGURAL EVENT KICKS OFF AT F1 FINALE

Here’s everything you need to know about the Formula 4 SEA 2017-18 Championship’s maiden race.

Come the end of September, we will witness the start of the Formula 4 SEA 2017-18 season, running concurrent with the Malaysian F1 GP Finale. It will be the very last time that the pinnacle of motorsport will compete on our shores. However, where one legend ends, another begins.

The 2017-18 Formula 4 South East Asia (F4 SEA) Championship – certified by FIA, will kickoff its 5-event tour of South East Asia right here on Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit as the support race for Formula 1. A total of six races will be fought over the weekend. Race 1 will be held on Friday, followed by races 2, 3, 4 on Saturday and races 5 and 6 on the Grand Prix day itself.

After the curtain opener, the contingent will load up and ship out for the second event, giving the team and drivers a breather between races.

Event 2 marks the calendar from 20-22 October. The Clark International Speedway in the is home to a myriad of local motorsport events such as the Philippine Touring Car Championship. F4 SEA’s tour of duty will see the rookie drivers battling it out on the highly technical, counter-clockwise FIA grade 4 course which spans 4.189km.

Indonesia’s challenging 3.965 km Sentul International Circuit meanwhile will host Event 3 from 24- 26November. The 120,000-capacity venue has been abbreviated to some 40% of its original design and now stages events like Formula BMW Asia and Formula V6 Asia.

In the New Year, from 12-14 January 2018, the team will contest the penultimate round of the championship at the Bhat2 million Herman Tilke-designed Buriram United International Circuit.

Team and drivers will then head back to the Sepang International Circuit for the season’s climax from 8- 10 February, a round which will see a podium of winners - hopefully including the next F1 sensation - being crowned in the season finale.

Given the equal playing field of Formula 4 SEA, it is the perfect avenue for young drivers to graduate from karting into the expert world of formula racing. Formula 4 SEA winning drivers are accredited FIA Super License Points which allows for exponential career advancements; just ask Lance, who’s climbed the ladder since his start in Formula 4 and is now blazing a trail within the ranks of Formula 1.

“I think that F4 is a good formula as it gives you the opportunity to race in a single seater at a young age. I was the F4 Champion in my country. I drove under the Canadian flag and became the Italian F4 champion in 2014.”

Lance Stroll - Williams F1 Driver
