Alpine News - June 2021 Press information 18 /06/2021 ALPINE NEWS - JUNE 2021 Upcoming news Focus on … Alpine Cars and Alpine F1 Team, preparing the cars of tomorrow Did you know? Recap of the latest news Alpine A110 LÉGENDE GT 2021 available for testing at the France Park Fleet UPCOMING NEWS / Story - A480: The alchemy of tire management The A480 engineers explain the alchemy of tire management. / Sports calendar [F1] The French Grand Prix takes places at Le Castellet! Austrian Grand Prix on the Spielberg circuit on June 27th and July 4th. The cars will meet again on July 18th at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. [WEC] The 6 Hours of Monza will mark the third race of the WEC season, to be held on July 18th. [CUP] The Spa-Francorchamps circuit will host the Alpine Elf Europa Cup on June 20th. FOCUS ON… ALPINE CARS AND ALPINE F1 TEAM, PREPARING THE CARS OF TOMORROW For Alpine, aerodynamics is the new frontier for sports car performance (speed, range). As part of the development of the brand's future models, Alpine Cars' engineers have called on the expertise and methods of the Alpine F1 Team's aerodynamicists based in Enstone The study work involved the A110, simultaneously conducted from the wind tunnel in France and Enstone with the Alpine F1 Team engineers. The A110 was equipped with a Rake made of 160 sensors and four scanners to collect and process information. The car was also equipped with surface pressure sensors to measure the air pressure on the bodywork and to identify areas of low and high pressure. In total, the A110 was equipped with almost 300 sensors. To complete the battery of tests and measurements, part of the bodywork was covered with a paint with a specific viscosity, also used in Formula 1, allowing it to capture all the air flows on the bodywork at a speed of around 130 km/h. The data collected over 8 hours was processed almost simultaneously, whereas it usually takes several weeks of work in a non-F1 context. This collaboration, beyond the finesse and quality of the data collected, also makes it possible to reduce the costs and development times related to the aerodynamics of future Alpine models. In the meantime, the Alpine F1 Team and BorgWarner - a specialist firm in propulsion technology - have announced a technical partnership that will benefit production vehicles from Alpine and the Renault-Nissan- Mitsubishi Alliance. Indeed, cars and F1 faces similar challenges in optimizing every propulsion-related detail to achieve greater range and power while taking into account environmental impact. With this technical partnership, Alpine can benefit from a shared approach to electrification, hybridization, high performance batteries and energy recovery components. Link to the press release DID YOU KNOW? “What is BOP (Balance of Performance)? What impact does it have on the race?” When several types of racing car with different engines compete in the same class, it makes sense that their performance levels shall be similar. If the legislator of the championship concerned does not take steps to balance the performance of these cars, the show on the track is likely to be bit dull, with the best performing car leading from start to finish. To keep the suspense alive, and to ensure that each team has a chance of winning the race in its class, the championship organizers have introduced a Balance of Performance (BoP). The principle of a BoP is to reduce the performance of a car compared to other cars in the same class, either by imposing ballast, limiting aerodynamic devices, or limiting the maximum power or energy of its engine. In races where refueling is allowed, BoP may also involve limiting the speed at which the tank is filled. After inspection, time penalties during the race, or in extreme situations, disqualification, may be applied in the event of a detected infringement. A BoP is in force in the Hypercar category of the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) in which Alpine is entered. It may change as the season progresses. For example, during the 8 Hours of Portimao on June 13, the weight of the Alpine Endurance Team's A480 increased from 930 to 952 kg, an additional 22 kg of ballast compared to the first race of the season. The maximum level of usable energy on its engine has also been reduced from 920 to 918 Mega Joules. After the introduction of the BoP, the level of performance of the cars in the same class depends essentially on the race strategy, the settings made before the race, and obviously the drivers' driving skills “F1 tech put to use in Leicester’s Hospitals” A pioneering new device to help doctors and nurses communicate clearly while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) has been developed and successfully tested by Leicester academics in collaboration with engineers from Formula 1 racing. The PPE worn by medical staff treating patients with COVID-19 and other infectious diseases means that doctors and nurses regularly have to shout to be heard, which is not only exhausting but can also lead to communication errors that could potentially harm patients. Tim Coats, Professor of Medicine at the University of Leicester and Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Leicester Hospitals, created the MedicCom in collaboration with the non-profit group Project Pitlane, which brings together leading figures from the world of F1. MedicCom's prototype, uses a laryngeal microphone to pick up and amplify sound, allowing patients to better hear the medical staff caring for them. The same feature also allows doctors and nurses to hear each other much more clearly, while a Bluetooth connection links to a mobile phone, allowing the doctor or nurse to have a clear telephone conversation with the patient's relatives. Working with F1 engineers, their knowledge of advanced electrical engineering - which results in a dramatic reduction in the size of the object - and their prototyping facilities were used to produce in six months a device that would normally take years. Nine prototypes were produced using the Alpine F1 Team's facilities at Enstone. Alpine F1 Team strategic advisor Bob Bell, former Alpine electronics manager Jason Rees and Andy Damerum at Red Bull Advanced Technologies worked closely with Professor Coats to understand the needs of healthcare professionals and develop the new device in record time. • 2020 Formula 1 Heineken Portuguese Grand Prix
2020 Formula 1 Heineken Portuguese Grand Prix, Sunday Renault DP World F1 Team scored six points from the Heineken Portuguese Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon eighth and Daniel Ricciardo ninth at the first race in Portugal for 24 years. The double points finish means the team moves onto 120 points to remain fifth in the Constructors’ Championship and six points from third place. An action-packed race start saw Daniel move up to eighth after an early battle with the Red Bull of Alexander Albon, whilst Esteban was caught in a melee for the final points scoring position. As predicted, light rain was ever present during the race, but it was never heavy enough to alter proceedings. With grip levels consistently low, Daniel was the first to box with his Soft tyres wearing down rapidly forcing him to pit on lap 14 for fresh Mediums. With Daniel dropping towards the rear of the field having pitted early, Esteban - on the alternate strategy - completed 53 laps on his Medium tyres and was the last to make a first stop. By the time of his stop, Daniel, had scythed his way through the field with others stopping and was safely inside the top ten and in a battle for eighth with Sebastian Vettel. A slightly slow stop for Esteban meant he re-joined just ahead of his teammate, and despite having strong pace on the Softs for the final fifteen laps he was unable to make any major inroads on the cars ahead. Esteban crossed the finish line in eighth position, with Daniel just behind in ninth making it a double-points finish for the team.

  • 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship Monaco Grand Prix
FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE L' AUTOMOBILE 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship Monaco Grand Prix Wednesday Drivers’ Press Conference Transcript PART ONE: DRIVERS – Jenson BUTTON (McLaren), Nico HULKENBERG (Renault), Esteban OCON (Force India) PRESS CONFERENCE Q: Jenson, 2009 Monaco GP winner and World Champion of course, welcome back. Unusual circumstances to say the least. What level of preparation have you done for this race and how well do you feel you know the 2017 McLaren F1 car? Jenson BUTTON: First of all it’s great to be back, good to see so many faces I haven’t seen for six months, apart from TV obviously. The preparation has been good; apart from [the fact that] I haven’t obviously driven the car. These new regulations… so it’s not perfect. The option was to do half a day in Bahrain, which I though was absolutely useless for me to do, a completely different type of circuit. I said to the team, I think it’s best if I do a few days in the simulator. Obviously as drivers we love the simulator, so I was raring to go. I spent a lot of time in the simulator getting a feel for it. Yeah, it’s been interesting. You know, most of the stuff is the same, but there are a few things that are obviously different, with the difference in regulations, and there are always… it just changes year to year with new technology and what have you. A few things to learn but it’s still a racing car, just got to get used to it being a bit wider.

  • Fernando Takes Home One-Point After Measured Drive in Austria Alpine F1
Fernando takes home one-point after measured drive in Austria Alpine F1 Team’s Fernando Alonso claimed a well-deserved point from the BWT Austrian Grand Prix after a thrilling finale in Spielberg. Team-mate Esteban Ocon retired from the race after an unfortunate incident on the opening lap. Fernando had to dig deep to claim tenth place, passing Williams’ George Russell four laps from the end after a battling duel between the pair. On a bold one-stop, Medium to Hard strategy, Fernando was able to make the plan stick as he continued his points streak, which now spans to four consecutive races. Esteban’s afternoon ended at Turn 3 on the opening lap of the 71-lap race as he was caught up in an incident between Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi. The Frenchman was stuck in the middle of the pair and suffered front right suspension damage, which forced his retirement. Esteban Ocon, started P17, DNF: “It was unfortunate for our race to end early today. There wasn’t much I could have done as I was sandwiched between Mick [Schumacher] and Antonio [Giovinazzi] at Turn 3 in a racing incident. It’s one of those things and a consequence of starting the race at the back. There’s always a chance for fights and contact and it’s easier to be caught up in trouble there. The team and I can’t seem to catch a break at the moment. We’ll reset, restart from zero and prepare for Silverstone. The only way we can go is forwards.” Fernando Alonso, started P14, finished P10: “It was difficult to score points today and we knew this starting from so far back.

For more than 115 years Renault has embraced the challenge of motorsport in multiple guises. It recognised the value of competitive activities for technical and commercial gain: in December 1898 Louis Renault drove the Type A Voiturette up the steepest street in Paris, the rue Lepic. The first orders for the ground-breaking car with direct drive flooded in. In 1902 the nimble, lightweight Type K, fitted with Renault’s first 4-cylinder engine, took victory in the Paris-Vienna rally. Again, many more cars were sold. Going through the years, in 1977 Renault introduced the first-ever turbocharged car to F1.

  • Alpine F1 Team Takes Home Two Points from Spanish Grand Prix After Hard-Fought Contest Alpine F1 Team's Esteban Ocon Scored Tw
Alpine F1 Team takes home two points from Spanish Grand Prix after hard-fought contest Alpine F1 Team’s Esteban Ocon scored two points from today’s Spanish Grand Prix after finishing in ninth place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with home favourite Fernando Alonso outside the points in seventeenth. On a difficult afternoon in Barcelona, the team planned for a one-stop strategy with both cars, which ultimately proved increasingly challenging towards the latter stages of the race. Esteban managed to hold on to ninth place at the chequered flag with Fernando pitting close to the end as a result of high degradation on his Medium tyres on his second stint. After yesterday’s superb qualifying, Esteban made a clean start from fifth position, but lost two places on the opening lap. Fernando, from tenth, was locked in a wheel-to-wheel battle but held onto his place. In between an early safety car, both drivers remained in seventh and tenth before Fernando pitted on lap 21 for Mediums and Esteban two laps later for the same compound. With others around also pitting, it was a straight, tactical fight to the end. Esteban managed his tyres to the end, falling back to ninth, with Fernando unable to secure points at his home race after struggling on his set of tyres. He pitted on lap 61 for Softs to take him to the chequered flag in seventeenth. The team remains fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. Esteban Ocon, started P5, finished P9 “It was a tough race today. We have a few things to review as we weren’t as fast as the Ferraris or the McLarens in the race.
