Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The Swazi kingdom grew out of the pressures associated with competition for trade and for the rich resources of Shiselweni. While centred on this area it acquired some of its characteristic features - notably a regimental system, and the dominance of a Dlamini aristocracy. Around 1815 the Swazi came under pressure from the South, and were forced to colonise the land lying north of the Lusutfu. Here they remained for some years a nation under arms, as they plundered local peoples, and were themselves swept about by the currents of the Mfecane. In time a more settled administration emerged, as the aristocracy spread out from the royal centres at Ezulwini, and this process accelerated under Mswati as he subdued recalcitrant chiefdoms, and restructured the regiments. -

Below is published the first of an important series of articles compiled from the letters and diaries of Sir Theophilus Shepstone. The articles will appear daily in these columns, and will become more and more absorbing as the interests and importance of the young Shepstone developed. In this article the story is told of the great Natalian’s first command. Under Sir Benjamin d’Urban he served with Colonel Harry Smith against Hinza. His know- ledge of the native and his language ivas even then such that he was chosen to organise a force of 6,000 Fingos. This he did to the satisfaction of his commander and the surprise of the enemy. To-morroiv’s article deals with the acquisition to the Empire of “ Queen Adelaide’s Province,” and dramat ically describes the attempted escape and death of Hinza. Article The Other Side of the Story: Attempts by Missionaries to Facilitate Landownership by Africans during the Colonial Era R. Simangaliso Kumalo https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2098-3281 University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article provides a critique of the role played by progressive missionaries in securing land for the African people in some selected mission stations in South Africa. It argues that, in spite of the dominant narrative that the missionaries played a role in the dispossession of the African people of their land, there are those who refused to participate in the dispossession. Instead, they used their status, colour and privilege to subvert the policy of land dispossession. It critically examines the work done by four progressive missionaries from different denominations in their attempt to subvert the laws of land dispossession by facilitating land ownership for Africans. The article interacts with the work of Revs John Philip (LMS), James Allison (Methodist), William Wilcox and John Langalibalele Dube (American Zulu Mission [AZM]), who devised land redistributive mechanisms as part of their mission strategies to benefit the disenfranchised Africans. The Legacy of Inkosi Albert John Luthuli's Christian-Centred Political
Faith and politics in the context of struggle: the legacy of Inkosi Albert John Luthuli’s Christian-centred political leadership Simangaliso Kumalo Ministry, Education & Governance Programme, School of Religion and Theology, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa Abstract Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli, a Zulu Inkosi and former President-General of the African National Congress (ANC) and a lay-preacher in the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) is a significant figure as he represents the last generation of ANC presidents who were opposed to violence in their execution of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. He attributed his opposition to violence to his Christian faith and theology. As a result he is remembered as a peace-maker, a reputation that earned him the honour of being the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Also central to Luthuli’s leadership of the ANC and his people at Groutville was democratic values of leadership where the voices of people mattered including those of the youth and women and his teaching on non-violence, much of which is shaped by his Christian faith and theology. This article seeks to examine Luthuli’s legacy as a leader who used peaceful means not only to resist apartheid but also to execute his duties both in the party and the community. The study is a contribution to the struggle of maintaining peace in the political sphere in South Africa which is marked by inter and intra party violence. The aim is to examine Luthuli’s legacy for lessons that can be used in a democratic South Africa. -

SWINGING BETWEEN BILLIGERENCE AND SERVILITY: JOHN DUBE’S STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM(S) IN SOUTH AFRICA Simanga Kumalo Ministry Education and Governance Program, School of Religion and Theology, University of KwaZulu Natal, Scottsville, South Africa Abstract John Langalibalele Mafukuzela Dube left an indelible legacy in South Africa’s political, educational and religious spheres. He was a church leader, veteran politician, journalist, philanthropist and educationist. He was the first President of the African National Congress (ANC) when it was formed in Bloemfontein on January 8, 1912 as the South African National Native Congress (SANNC). Dube was also the founder of the first Zulu newspaper ILanga laseNatali through which he published the experiences of African people under white rule. As the first president of what was to become Africa’s most influential political and liberation movement, Dube served as an ordained minister of the Congregational Church. This important connection helped Dube define church-state relations in colonial South Africa, thus forging the role that African clergy would later need to play in the struggle for South Africa’s freedom and democracy. Although his work influenced various aspects of African people’s lives such as the social, political, educational and economic, he firmly located himself in the church as a pastor and Christian activist whose vocation was to struggle for all the freedoms that were denied to his people, including freedom of religion. This study offers a brief profile of John Dube as a political theologian and highlights his contribution to the struggle of African people for the freedom from colonial and white rule. -

THE ANGLO ZULU WAR AND ITS PLACE IN HISTORY Imperial Showstopper or Imperial Sideshow? Dr Anthony Henfrey ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The title of this article begs an immediate question: Whose History? For the Zulu Kingdom the Anglo-Zulu War was a seminal event with far-reaching consequences that extend to the present day. From the British perspective, the war was little more than an embarrassing and expensive sideshow. Lord Salisbury, Foreign Secretary at the time of the war and later Prime Minister, accepted the inevitability of small colonial wars but he was accurately reflecting contemporary political opinion when he later described them as “merely the surf that marks the edge of the advancing wave of civilisation”. (1) The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, which lasted barely six months, was one such war. In the past 120 years there has evolved a truly prodigious bibliography covering every conceivable aspect (and some inconceivable ones) of this minor Victorian conflict. Michael Caine may have done much to revive modern interest in the war but this interest has never been dormant. It is the sheer drama of the opening weeks of the war that has always captured the imagination. Not since the Indian Mutiny in 1857 had imperial forces been so completely humiliated. As Captain Erich Wagner has recently highlighted (2), the British Army lost more officers at Isandlwana, 52 than it did during the three battles of the Waterloo campaign , 48. No battalion had ever lost so many officers in a single engagement. The heroic stand of the 2nd/24th at Rorke’s Drift partially redeemed imperial honour and captured the public imagination forever. -

HUDSON Under the DireCtion of Dr. Mohammed Hassen Ali and Dr. Jared Poley ABSTRACT Apart from a sense of racial superiority, which was certainly not unique to white Cape colonists, what is clear is that at the turn of the nineteenth century, Afrikaners were a disparate group. Economically, geographically, educationally, and religiously they were by no means united. Hierarchies existed throughout all cross sections of society. There was little political consciousness and no sense of a nation. Yet by the end of the nineteenth century they had developed a distinct sense of nationalism, indeed of a volk [people; ethnicity] ordained by God. The objective of this thesis is to identify and analyze three key historical events, the emotional sentiments evoked by these nationalistic milestones, and the evolution of a unified Afrikaner identity that would ultimately be used to justify the abhorrent system of apartheid. -

Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Science December 2015 An Abstract of the Thesis of Caellagh Morrissey for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of History and International Studies to be taken December 2015 Title: Fugitive Queens: Amakhosikazi and the Evolution of Gender and Power in KwaZulu-Natal (1816-1889) Professor Lindsay F. Braun Amakhosikazi (elite women) played a vital role within the social, economic, and political reality of the Zulu pre-colonial state. However, histories have largely categorized them as accessory to the lives of powerful men. Through close readings of oral traditions, travelogues, and government documentation, this paper discusses the spaces in which the amakhosikazi exhibited power, and tracks changes in the social position of queen mothers, as well as some members of related groups of elite women, from the early years of the Zulu chiefdom in the 1750s up until the 1887 annexation by Britain and their crucial intervention in royal matters in 1889. The amakhosika=i can be seen operating in a complex social space wherein individual women accessed power through association to political clans, biological and economic reproduction, manipulation, and spiritual influence. Women's access to male power sources changed through both internal political shifts and external pressures. but generally increased in the first half of the 1800s, and the declined over time and with the fracturing of Zulu hegemony. -

Different scholars give different accounts of the battle. Most historians differ on the root causes of the battle. Some attribute it to white imperialists who manipulated scenes and used the weakness of King Mpande to cause the war. According to this opinion, the Natal government entered the succession issue in an attempt to provide itself with a new “reserve” of land between the Thukela and Mhlathuze Rivers. Other sources point King Mpande as the one responsible for the clash between Princes Cetshwayo and Mbuyazi. The land issue and power also played a role in the outbreak of hostilities between princes. It is therefore apparent that different factions played a role in the outbreak of this war.
