3 NSW FEATURES FOR NEW YORK MARKET – NO BORDERS

Five feature film projects from Australia and New Zealand have been invited to the US No Borders Co-production Market to be held in New York next month.

The selected films are AN IMAGINARY LIFE, from , based on the book by David Malouf, with Producer Penny Chapman (THE ROAD FROM COORAIN), Director Fred Schepisi (PLENTY, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION) and Writer John Alsop (My Brother Jack, Brides Of Christ); MY YEAR WITHOUT SEX, from New South Wales, with Producer Bridget Ikin (LOOK BOTH WAYS, AN ANGEL AT MY TABLE), Writer/Director Sarah Watt (LOOK BOTH WAYS); FIREBIRD, from New Zealand, with Producer Catherine Fitzgerald, Directors Christine Parker and Peter Wells, and Writers Peter Wells and Christine Parker; HOLLOW POINT, from Victoria, with Producer Peter Ford (STORM WARNING), Director/Co-writer Matthew George (LET’S GET SKASE, FOUR JACKS) and Co-writer Christopher Kelly; and MYSELF: SOMETIMES, from New South Wales, with emerging feature team Producer Melissa Beauford and Writer/Director Kieran Galvin.

The Producers from each of the invited projects will attend round table discussions, social events, and one-on-one meetings with financiers, sales agents and international television buyers at the IFP.

The FTO, Film Victoria and the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) formed a strategic partnership in 2004 to secure places at No Borders held during the annual Independent Film Producer Market (IFP) in New York City.

Tania Chambers, FTO Chief Executive said: “One of the FTO’s key strategies is to assist our filmmakers directly engage with the international marketplace both in terms of financing and the sales and marketing of their films. No Borders successfully gave the NSW feature CLUBLAND a strong presence in the US where it was recently released across 50 North American cities.”

Film Victoria CEO, Sandra Sdraulig, said: “We are once again thrilled to be involved in this exciting initiative with the FTO and NZFC. No Borders offers an exceptional opportunity for our filmmakers to meet with key decision makers who can assist in propelling their project forward into the next stage of development.”

PRODUCTION INVESTMENT ROUND 19 – DEADLINE 0CT 15

Expressions of Interest Deadline: 10am, Monday 15 October 2007.

Please advise the FTO via an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI) if intending to submit to this round. NO APPLICATION FORM IS REQUIRED AT THIS STAGE. This is a preliminary EOI and should consist only of the following:

1. Applicant details including company and contact details. 2. The creative team and cast attached if any (max 1 page) 3. An extended synopsis of the project, and type of project (max 1 page) 4. Proposed Financing plan and Status of finance and proposed FTO amount requested. (max 2 pages)

Once an EOI is received Project Officers will liaise with producers as the financing of their project develops. Only those projects able to demonstrate financial readiness will be invited to progress formally into the round.

At this time, a formal application form along with usual submission materials will be required and assessment will proceed in the normal way.

Funding decisions will be made at the FTO Board meeting in December 2007.

SPAA FRINGE – A VERY FAST FILM COMPETITION

Organisers of this year’s SPAA Fringe Conference are calling for teams of Writers, Producers, Directors, DOPs, and Editors to enter the Very Fast Film Competition.

Five teams will produce, edit and live stream a short screen story during SPAA Fringe, which is now returning to Sydney from Brisbane with the support of the FTO and local partners.

The competition is aimed at passionate content creators who will be rewarded with prizes, develop working relationships with like-minded people, and the opportunity to showcase their work to thousands of people in the industry.

The competition is open to SPAA Fringe registered delegates only.

Individuals or teams can apply by submitting scripts to SPAA Fringe, from which five will be selected for the competition.

Scripts Deadline: Friday, October 5.

FEDERAL LEGISLATION TABLED FOR PRODUCER OFFSET, LOCATION AND PDV OFFSETS

Tax legislation giving effect to the Producer Offset, Location Offset and PDV Offset was tabled August 16.

Debate will take place in the next sitting of Federal Parliament, scheduled for September 10-16.

FILMING RESTRICTIONS DURING APEC FORUM – UPDATE

The following is a Roads and Traffic Authority update for traffic changes in and around Sydney from September 1-10 due to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, to accommodate security arrangements.

Expect delays and congestion in the central business district (CBD) and on major arterial roads to and from the airport.

Key traffic changes to the road network include: Road closures and controlled access - managed by NSW Police - in the northern end of the CBD bounded by Alfred, Macquarie, King and George streets which will result in the relocation of bus and taxi terminals.

Intermittent closures of the Cahill Expressway over from the evening of Tuesday 4 to Sunday 9 September.

Some lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed for short periods of time on the evening of Saturday 8 September. However traffic will still be able to use the bridge in both directions.

Closure of the Macquarie Street exit from the Cahill Expressway from the evening of Tuesday 4 September to the afternoon of Monday 10 September.

Closure of Macquarie Street north of Shakespeare Place from the evening of Tuesday 4 September to Monday 10 September.

Lane closures on key roads to and from Sydney Airport including Southern Cross Drive, South Dowling Street and Eastern Distributor – diversions will be in place and signposted.

Special Event Clearway signs will be operational through the CBD, The Rocks and Darling Harbour. The clearways will have different operating times, but the first will become operational from 4am, Sunday 2 September. Most Clearways will come into effect from Tuesday 4 September, and include suburban arterial roads where increased traffic is expected. Fines of $185 for stopping in a clearway and $156 tow-away fee will be enforced.

The FTO reminds the screen production industry that APEC may affect filming plans within the during this time.

The FTO has been advised by the following authorities that no permits will be issued for filming activities between Sunday September 2 and Sunday 9 September:

Page 3 of 8 Central City Traffic Surry Hills Traffic Police The Rocks Traffic Police RTA, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge Aviation – there will be a 45 nautical mile restriction zone. Sydney Harbour – operating but with some restrictions. North Sydney Council – areas adjacent to the Harbour will be restricted. Please liaise directly with the Council regarding areas and specific dates.

Some of these Authorities have advised the FTO that they were looking at a “no permitting” policy commencing the previous weekend (Saturday 25 August) and not finishing until the weekend after (Sunday 16 September). This may change as details are clarified and will also depend on where you wish to film, but please be aware of the possibility of permission being denied or restricted during that time.

Heyy Babyy, an Indian feature shot mostly on location in Sydney, to be released internationally on Aug 24, premiered in Sydney on Aug 22. The story involves three handsome Indian bachelors living in Sydney, whose lives are changed when a dimpled little roommate turns up on their doorstep - complete with crib, pacifier and dirty nappy.

SEPTEMBER – SELECTED FOR TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

SEPTEMBER, the first film produced through Tropfest’s Feature Program, has been invited to screen in the prestigious Discovery Programme at the Toronto International Film Festival, in September.

SEPTEMBER is directed by Peter Carstairs, written by Ant Horn and Peter Carstairs, and produced by John Polson with co-producers Serena Paull and Lynda House. It stars Xavier Samuel as Ed, Clarence John Ryan as Paddy and Mia Wasikowska as Amelia.

SEPTEMBER was financed with the assistance of Film Finance Corporation Australia and produced in association with the FTO’s Regional Filming Fund.

This fund is available to Producers shooting a week or more in regional NSW. The fund covers up to 35% of a project’s regional spend and a maximum of $100,000 per project. Full funding criteria is available in the Fund’s Guidelines on the FTO web site. The link to the relevant page is below.

ABS TO CONDUCT TWO SURVEYS OF SCREEN CONTENT INDUSTRY

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has begun surveying film, television, video production and digital games development services in Australia.

The Film, Television and Video Production and Post-Production, Digital and Visual Effects Services 2006-07 publication will report on production levels, income, employment numbers and profitability across the audio-visual production industry.

Last conducted in 2002-03, the survey has been expanded following consultation with the Australian Film Commission (AFC), film agencies and the wider industry to provide greater detail on post-production, digital and visual effects.

The surveys are part of the ABS’s commitment to providing statistics on a range of service industries in Australia. The findings of both surveys will be published in June 2008.

Metro Screen is a production and training facility catering to emerging film, video and multimedia practitioners. As a registered training organisation (RTO) Metro Screen offers training, professional development workshops, industry seminars, and skills development in film, television, and digital technology.

An opportunity exists to coordinate Metro Screen’s off-site training activities, primarily in western Sydney and regional NSW.

The Mobile Unit Coordinator is responsible for promoting skills development in the areas of video, television, multimedia and cinema projection. This is a key role within Metro Screen that is seeking the right person to design and coordinate all aspects of Mobile Unit learning programs. Duties also include administering the Mobile Unit budget and to secure new projects and funding. A crucial element of this role is liaison and networking with a variety of contacts throughout western Sydney and regional NSW. The position may also take on occasional teaching responsibilities and will involve travel within NSW.

This project is essential in developing a screen culture and screen industry in areas that have little access to training, mentors, facilities and services. Salary: $35,000 pro rata Hours: 22.8 hrs/ week (3 day equivalent preferably Tuesday to Thursday)

COMMUNICATIONS POLICY & RESEARCH FORUM – SEPT 24-25

Journalist, Peter Manning and author, Mark Pesce, are guest speakers at this year’s Communications Policy and Reserch Forum at Sydney’s University of Technology, September 24-25.

The forum is the largest gathering of communications knowledge from around the country, and a springboard for major data and thinking about the state of media, telecommunications and the internet.

DECEMBER BOYS, is the story of four orphan teens growing up behind closed doors of a Catholic convent in the outback during the 1960s. Based on Michael Noonan’s highly acclaimed novel, this coming-of-age drama features legendary actor Jack Thompson and marks Daniel Radcliffe’s first major role outside the HARRY POTTER character.

It is directed by Rod Hardy who will be available on-stage after the screening for an audience Q&A and discussion about the film.

ASIAN FESTIVAL OF 1ST FILMS – ENTRIES DEADLINE AUG 31

The Australian Screen Editors Guild is calling for entries for its 2nd Annual “Elephant Stamp” Awards.

Entries Deadline: Friday, September 14.

With the addition of one new category, entries will now be accepted for Best Achievement in Editing in the following five areas:

The 2007 ASE Awards will be held in conjunction with the annual Accreditation Ceremony in Sydney on December 16.

FLICKERFEST 2008 – ENTRIES DEADLINE SEPT 14

Entries for Flickerfest 2008 are now open. Flickerfest is Australia’s only ®Academy Award accredited Short Film festival, and its largest short film competition.

Flickerfest will screen for ten days under in an open-air theatre at in January 2008, before heading off around Australia on a 16 venue national tour.

The Festival boasts three competitive programs - International, Australian and Documentary as well as a number of special programs and forums out of competition.

CHILDREN'S FEATURE FILM DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE – DEADLINE OCT 29

The Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) has announced a Children’s Feature Film Development Initiative, aimed at encouraging feature film writers, producers and directors to consider developing projects for a child and family audience.

Funding will be available for up to four projects, and for the creative teams to work on a project through a number of drafts with ACTF development assistance.

Applications Deadline: October 29, 2007.
