    Music Our totally awesome music subbies and contributors have been working hard over the semester break to bring you the latest and greatest in music. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. Trish Bater 080207052 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the custom of white people blacking their faces and its continuation at a time when society is increasingly aware of accusations of racism. To provide a context, an overview of the long history of black people in England is offered, and issues about black stereotypes, including how ‘blackness’ has been perceived and represented, are considered. The historical use of blackface in England in various situations, including entertainment, social disorder, and tradition, is described in some detail. It is found that nowadays the practice has largely been rejected, but continues in folk activities, notably in some dance styles and in the performance of traditional (folk) drama. Research conducted through participant observation, interview, case study, and examination of web-based resources, drawing on my long familiarity with the folk world, found that participants overwhelmingly believe that blackface is a part of the tradition they are following and is connected to its past use as a disguise. However, although all are aware of the sensitivity of the subject, some performers are fiercely defensive of blackface, while others now question its application and amend their ‘disguise’ in different ways.

    1 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Malcolm Turner Greetings to fans, first-timers and the animatedly curious. DIRECTOR Despite the crazed improbability of it all, MIAF is still here doing its thing. It certainly suffers from the so-called ‘bumble bee’ syndrome. That is to say, on paper there’s no way Melbourne International you can prove it will fly. Somehow though, Air MIAF has found a way to bump down the Animation Festival runway, limp into the air (barely missing the trees) and splutter up into the clouds. Dunno how we do it, to be honest. It certainly wouldn’t happen without the support of ACMI, Screen Australia and each and every one of the sponsors. Nor would it happen without the core crew who give up a great deal of their time and varying slivers of their sanity to make this thing work. And it definitely wouldn’t happen without the filmmakers. It surprises alot of people (including me sometimes) just how many short animated films are being made. We get over 2,000 entries every year and the vast majority of them are made for the simple reason that somebody has felt compelled to create them – in much the same way that a painter feels compelled to paint a picture or a playwright feels compelled to create an imaginary universe, populated with a fictional tribe who have something on their mind they want to share. Animation, as a technological achievement, surrounds us and is woven into so many elements of our daily lives. It is a workhorse technology that is pressed into service by any number of plump jockeys who vie for our scarce and shattered attentions as we go through our day.
