The History of the Shroud
MARK GUSCIN: THE HISTORY OF THE SHROUD Part One – Before the Thirteenth Century It is often said that the Shroud has no documented history before the thirteenth century; while it is true that we are all aware of the immense difficulties of establishing the Shroud’s history, the statement as such is somewhat misleading. It is often understood as meaning that there are no references to the Shroud before this date, and this is simply not true. In fact, there are numerous references to the conservation of the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth from the very beginning of the Christian era – the problem comes when we try to equate the shroud mentioned in these documents with the cloth now kept in Turin. This is a very significant point: sceptics often say that there are no references to the Shroud – but there are. Hence in the title of this paper I have deliberately omitted the words “of Turin” after the word “Shroud”. Nevertheless, we are going to start this overview with an exception. There is one unmistakeable documentary reference to the Shroud of Turin from before the twelfth century. Well known to all Shroud scholars, its true significance is often overlooked. I am referring of course to Codex Pray, whose name is often misunderstood (at least in the English speaking world) as a reference to prayer. In fact, the name comes from the Jesuit György Pray, who discovered the manuscript in 1770. It is kept in the National Széchenyi library in Budapest, Hungary. It is the earliest known manuscript with a text in the Hungarian language, and so is an important national treasure. -

Chaos e Kosmos XVI, 2015 – www.chaosekosmos.it Evil and politics in the Visigothic hagiography: the life of Saint Desiderius and Saint Bishop Masona* Germano Miguel Favaro Esteves Introduction The relationship between religion and politics is a subject much discussed by researchers of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. There are countless facts, events, documents and archaeological remains that give a glimpse of the extent of the importance of these issues within societies and cultures. In this work it will be analyzed a set of sources that, once relegated to a second plan in historical studies, over the past two decades have been reconfigured as a significant document for the study of society and imagery in the late-ancient and medieval periods: hagiography. It is important to note that the word “hagiography” is not contemporary to the production of these texts. This term is used only since the seventeenth century, when the systematic study of the saints, their history and worship began to designate both this new branch of knowledge, and the set of texts about saints with religious goals. Even though the term was born then relatively recently, Christian hagiographic literature began still with the early church when, based on Roman official documents or eyewitness reports, the tortures of the martyrs were registered1. Chase1 Aquinas Institute of Theology Abstract Baptism played a key role in Visigothic Spain. Jamie Wood has argued that this was the result of attempts by religious and secular authorities to navigate the transition from Arianism to orthodoxy, and to forge a common Spanish identity. This article places Wood in dialogue with Christian McConnell, whose work has reframed our understanding of initiation in Visigothic Spain. This article argues that the blessing of chrism was the central symbol by which Visigothic bishops asserted their authority in order to stabilize the Church and in turn the Visigothic State. López González Suicide in the Spanish Middle Ages: Literary Representation of Self-Aggression and Transgression Abstract Suicide in the Spanish Middle Ages: Literary Representation of Self-Aggression and Transgression studies the artistic representation of suicide in the Spanish Middle Ages. Through an interdisciplinary approach, this dissertation analyzes the way in which medieval Spanish people perceived and reacted to suicide and suicidal drives (namely, despair). Influenced by Plato’s philosophy, Saint Augustine helped shape the belief system and doctrines of the Church regarding self-murder, which condemned suicide on the grounds of the fifth commandment (non occides). Like the Church, the State also adopted a condemnatory legislation against those who had chosen death. -

Isidore of Seville's Early Influence and Dissemination
Chapter 14 Isidore of Seville’s Early Influence and Dissemination (636–711) Mark Lewis Tizzoni 1 Introduction Within a few decades of his death, certain of Isidore’s works were disseminat- ed rapidly, and knowledge of his life was spread throughout Spain and beyond. This chapter examines the immediate reception of Isidore, from the author’s death in 636 to the fall of the Visigothic kingdom to Muslim armies in 711. Isidore’s legacy was, at its very start, both human and intellectual: Isidore left behind not only his literary works but his students and followers. His legacy was born not only from his own efforts but from the efforts of the Iberian intel- lectuals who followed him. These intellectuals, some known to Isidore and others farther removed, received his thought and employed it in their own works, thus serving to transmit his works and reputation rapidly. Until recently, the study of Isidore’s legacy has been largely the purview of Spanish and French scholarship. As is generally the case with Isidorian studies, the work of Jacques Fontaine provides a good starting point. Fontaine provides a brief overview of Isidore’s immediate legacy in the epilogue to his Isidore de Séville: Genèse et originalité de la culture hispanique au temps des Wisigoths (Turnhout: 2000).1 A detailed study of Isidore’s early legacy is provided in the essays of Angel C. Vega, Manuel C. Díaz y Díaz, and Bernhard Bischoff found in Isidoriana, edited by Manuel C. Díaz y Díaz (Leon: 1961).2 Collectively, the rel- evant studies in Isidoriana lay out and analyse the 7th-century (and later) texts 1 Fontaine addresses many of the same texts covered in the present chapter, albeit in great brevity. -
