Waxahatchee — Ivy Tripp Release Date: April 7, 2015 MRG 549 Katie Crutchfield’s southern roots are undeniable. The name of her solo musical project Waxahatchee comes from a creek not far from her childhood home in Alabama and seems to represent both where she came from and where she’s going. Since leaving home, Crutchfield has drifted between New York and Philadelphia but chose to return to Alabama to write her first two albums: American Weekend, her debut filled with powerful lo-fi acoustic tracks full of lament, and Cerulean Salt, a more developed and solid narrative about growing up. Both are representations of a youthful struggle with unresolved issues and unrequited feelings. Waxhatchee’s latest record, Ivy Tripp, drifts confidently from these previous albums and brings forth a more informed and powerful recognition of where Crutchfield has currently found herself. The lament and grieving for her youth seem to have been replaced with control and sheer self-honesty. “My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it’s been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs,” says Crutchfield. “I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming, or just being cognizant in moments of deep confusion or sadness, and learning to really feel emotions and to grow from that.” Recorded and engineered by Kyle Gilbride of Wherever Audio at Crutchfield’s home on New York’s Long Island—with drums recorded in the gym of a local elementary school—Ivy Tripp presents a more developed and aged version of Waxahatchee.

:: View email as a web page :: On the most recent episode of Indiecast, Ian and I figured that we could all use a break from 2020. So instead of hashing out the latest news and trends in indie rock, we went back to the relatively simple and sedate year of 1999, prompted by the recent expansive reissue of the classic Wilco album, Summerteeth. What were your favorite albums of that year? Keep It Like A Secret? 69 Love Songs? Emergency & I? Midnite Vultures ? We went back and tried to remember what we were listening to, why we were listening to it, and what it all meant for the final year of the 20th century. Not that a year that also included Columbine and Woodstock 99 can be credibly described as “idyllic,” but it was fun to escape the madness of the present for about an hour. If you feel like jumping into a time machine, join us on the latest Indiecast. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... Our official YouTube channel is now the home of official music videos from Tori Amos, My Bloody Valentine, Jane's Addiction, and more. We've taken the liberty of collecting them all into one handy playlist. The new episode of Indiecast also compared the staying power of "cool" bands like The Strokes and The White Stripes. Foo Fighters announced a new album and played a new song on Saturday Night Live.

  • Waxahatchee on Taking Your Time
May 1, 2017 - Waxahatchee is the musical project of the Alabama-born, Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. Her fourth Waxahatchee album, Out in the Storm, is out July 2017 on Merge. As told to Brandon Stosuy, 2010 words. Tags: Music, Process, Inspiration, Identity, Focus, Anxiety. Waxahatchee on taking your time You wrote recently and mentioned how you connected to the interview we ran with Perfume Genius. Anything specific? One thing I related to, and that I feel applies to my process, is the feeling of dread you get when you think you’re never going to be able to make something great again, or something that you love again. That’s kind of gone away for me. I used to have that all the time. The drive to make music has always stemmed from wanting to make something that I loved, and so I was always sort of making it for myself. But that good feeling, once you do that and you have a finished product, was always clouded by this fear that I’d never be able to do it again. As I’ve gotten older, and made a bunch of records, that’s sort of gone away. Experience, and maybe just a little bit of wisdom, has made it go away. That’s definitely progress. Musicians are asked to be creative within a cycle. You finish a record, tour, write another record, and tour again. It’s like you have to conjure inspiration to keep things moving. I’ve definitely felt like that, like I’ve had to conjure something.

  • And a Teenager Shall Lead Them Lorde Rules a Year-End List. by JON PARELES
And a Teenager Shall Lead Them Lorde Rules a Year-End List. By JON PARELES. December 13, 2013 1. Lorde “Pure Heroine” (Universal) In hip-hop, keyboard-centered processionals ofte n accompany self-congratulatory boasts. “Pure Heroine,” the debut album by Lorde — the songwriter and singer Ella Yelich-O’Connor, from New Zealand — commandeers those wi de-open spaces with her lustrous voice and angel-choir harmonies carrying seriou s thoughts. Lorde writes about suburban provincialism, peer pressure, insecurity , determination and — in the irresistible “Royals” — about pop-culture fantasies and cla ss-conscious realities. She’s 17. 2. Laura Marling “Once I Was an Eagle” (Ribbon Music) A seven-song suite that accele rates from folky contemplation to fierce East-meets-West strumming is the sweepi ng start to Laura Marling‘s fourth album. The songs could be the chronicle of a br eakup, but they lead her through legend and family memory, lament and accusation and hymn. Her nimble guitars and her serenely knowing voice make every conundru m intimate. 3. Vampire Weekend “Modern Vampires of the City” (XL) Gravity and cleverness seesaw all the way through Vampire Weekend‘s third album. The characters in the songs now face grown-up responsibilities and questions of faith. Meanwhile, the tunes are full of manic invention and nutty juxtapositions: Baroque pomp and trash-can dr um sounds, rockabilly twang and digitally chopped-up vocals. Overthinking pays o ff. 4. Nine Inch Nails “Hesitation Marks” (Null/Columbia) Restarting Nine Inch Nails for the first time since 2009, Trent Reznor didn’t return to blasting and shouting.
