Preface

This book presents detailed drawings of 98 Delaware specific signs outlined in the Delaware Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (DE

MUTCD) 2018 Edition. Furthermore, this book outlines minimum retro-reflective material requirements for each sign (Type I -Engineering Grade, Type IV- High-

Intensity and Type IX - Diamond Grade). Note that, Type I material has the lowest retro-reflective grade, while Type IX has the highest retro-reflective grade of all three materials. The substitution of lower grade retro-reflective material with higher grade retro-reflective material is permitted for every sign presented in this book. However, substituting higher grade retro-reflective material with lower grade retro-reflective material is not permitted for any sign presented in this book. For example, a minimum retro-reflective material requirement for R3-20-DE (Turn Lane) sign is Type IV. In this case substituting Type IV with Type IX is permitted, however, substituting Type IV with Type I is not permitted.

All dimensions presented in the book are expressed in inches. For all word messages, Standard Highway Gothic font was used. The exception to this rule were signs D2-2- DE, D14-4-DE, D4-3-DE, SI-1-DE and SI-2-DE, where custom made fonts were used. The symbol’s overall height, width and location on a sign are dimensioned.

However, symbol details (graphics) are not dimensioned, but shown on a grid in the

I Appendix of this book. The grid is provided as a reference to ensure proportional relationship, not exact measurement.

Furthermore, the Appendix contains detailed design procedures on how to size and properly layout Destination Guide (D1-1), Street Blade (D3-1), Advance Street

Blade (W16-8) signs and decals. The Delaware Standard Highway Signs Book is accompanied with “shop” drawings presented in three digital formats:

a) Full-size, vector-based, dimensioned sign layout in .dwg format. This format can be imported in any CADD software for further manipulations.

b) Full-size, vector-based, colored, un-dimensioned sign layouts in Adobe

Illustrator (.ai) format. Layouts are to scale for each standard sign size indicated and can be transmitted directly to an electronic vinyl cutter for fabrication purposes and mounting onto a sign substrate. Please note that sign layouts do not necessarily scale directly from one size to the next, so be certain to use the correct file for the specified sign size.

c) Full-size, vector-based, colored, un-dimensioned sign layouts in FlexiSIGN (.fs) format. Layouts are to actual scale for each standard sign size indicated and can be transmitted directly to an electronic vinyl cutter for fabrication purposes and mounting onto a sign substrate.

II The new and updated sign designs in this book supersede any previous designs for the same signs contained in the previous editions of the Delaware Standard

Highway Sign Book. These designs are to be used by all traffic authorities, agencies, jurisdictions and persons involved with fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic signs on streets and highways in the State of Delaware.

Street Name Signs (D3-1) (Two subdivision street intersections)

For the intersection of two subdivision streets following guidelines shall be used: a) Dimensions: Following metal panels sizes shall be used for street name signs - 12”x 8”, 18”x 8”, 24”x 8”, 30”x 8”, 36”x 8”, 42”x 8” and 48”x 8”.

b) Letters: Use 4” Highway Gothic C for the street name and 3” Highway Gothic C for the type of roadway (Rd/St/Dr/Ave/Blvd) with the initial letter being upper-case and the rest of the legend being lower-case letters. c) Legend: If the legend does not fit within 48”x8” panel, use the 4” Highway C and 3” Highway C with narrow letter kerning. If the legend still does not fit within 48”x8” panel, then downsize letters by ½” increments until it fits. Use narrow letter kerning to fit the legend on the panel before downsizing letter heights. The legend shall be limited to only one line of text. d) Punctuation: Do not use punctuation. Figure 1. shows typical Street Name sign (D3-1) at the intersection of two subdivi- sion streets. The legend is center justified with 1.5” minimum edge spacing and 3” spac- ing between legend’s names. Highway Gothic C for the street name and 3” Highway Gothic C for the type of roadway (Rd/St/Dr/Ave/Blvd) was used in layout. Considering that total legend length is less than 45” long, no further adjustment is needed.

125125 In cases were legend name is larger than 45”, narrow letter kerning should be used. For example, the total length of legend shown in Figure 2., is 46” while total min- imum edge clearance is 3”. The sum of legend length (46”) and minimum edge clear- ance is larger than suggested maximum street blade panel length (48”). Therefore, the legend in current form can not be laid out on 48” panel. Considering that oversized (>48”) panels sizes and two-line legends are not recommended per DE MUTCD 2018 , the only way to lay out the legend is to use narrow letter kerning.

Narrow letter kerningkerningrefersrefers to 10% reduction in overall length of the legend. Bare in mind that reduction is achieved by proportionally reducing the spacing between letters and spacing in between between legend names, not by shrinking letter size.

Figure 3. shows the same street name as shown in Figure 2. but with legend laid out with narrow letters kerning. The total legend length is now less than 45”, and thus can be laid out on 48” panel. Please notice that once narrow letter kerning legend is used, the spacing between street names and roadway types is less than 3”.

126 In some cases street blade legend is too long even if narrow letter kerning is used (as shown in Figure 4.). In these cases legend’s letter sizes should be reduced in 1/2“ increments. For example, Figure 5. shows a street blade legend that has 3.5” Highway C normal kerning letters for street names, and 2.5” Highway C normal kern- ing letters for roadway type. However, in some cases even after reducing the letter sizes, street blade legend still might be longer than 45”. In that case, narrow letter kerning should be used in order to fit the legend to the panel (Figure 6.).

131131 Destination Guide Signs (D1-3)(131-3) Destination signs are essential to direct road users and to give information in the most simple, direct manner possible. Table 2D-1 of the DE MUTCD provides generic information regarding sizing of three-line Destination signs (D1-3). Current maintenance and replacement practices have shown that post-mounted, three-line DesDes-- tination signs (D1-3) with lengths larger than 72 inches, consequently result in a higher rate of wind-induced damage due to the excessively large surface area. To reduce the maintenance costs of the frequent replacement of oversized post- mounted guide signs, the maximum length of post-mounted, three-line Destination signs (D1-3) should be 72 inches. In cases where, due to legend size, a length larger than 72 inches is warranted, three-line Destination signs (D1-3) should be installed on breakaway I-beaml-beam posts. Design and fabrication of three-line Destination signs (D1-3) installed on two postsposts,, shall be based on the following sizing and layout criteria:

Letters: Use 6” Highway D for the destination name, with the initial letter being upper- case and the rest of the legend being lower-case letters.

OffsetOffset:: Use a 6” offset from the edge of the panel (left, right, top and bottom sides). Use a 6” clearance between destination names and arrows or mileage (Figure 14.).

ArrowsArrows:: Use 9” (length) xX 6” (height) arrows. Arrows pointing right are placed on the right edge of the sign, arrows pointing left and straight up are placed on the left edge of the sign. d) MileageMileage:: Mileage is placed on the right edge of the sign. e) LegendLegend:: If legend does not fit within 72” x 42” ((FigureFigure 15.15.),), use a 3” edge offset and a 3” clearance between destination names and arrows or mileage. While current DelDOT Standard Specifications allow signs with dimensions up to 48" to be installed on a single post, current maintenance and replacement practices have shown that Advance Street Name Plaques (W16-8) with longitudinal lengths of 48" are prone to excessive bending under wind loads. As such, DelDOT establishes the following Guidance regarding the design layout and sizing of Advance Street Name Plaques (W16-8P and W16-8aP) that are designated to be installed on one post: a) Dimensions: One Line (W16-8P) - 8” x 9”, 24” x 9", 30” x 9”, 36” x 9” & 42” x 9”.
