ARIZONA COOPERATIVE E TENSION AZ1310 May, 2009 Comandra Blister Rust Mary W. Olsen Comandra blister rust is a native disease in Arizona on ponderosa pine. It also occurs on Mondell pine, a pine species introduced for landscapes and Christmas tree production in Arizona. Comandra blister rust can cause death of ponderosa saplings, but it is not an important disease of mature ponderosa trees. However, infections kill Mondell pine, and they should not be planted within a mile of Comandra. The alternate host for the rust is Comandra pallida, for which the disease is named. Comandra pallida, commonly called bastard toadflax, is a small herbaceous perennial plant found in close association with oak. It has small light pink flowers in terminal clusters and nutlike fruit. It is found throughout Arizona at elevations of 4,000- 8,000 ft. Pathogen: Comandra blister rust, Cronartium comandrae Hosts: Pinus eldarica (Mondell pine, Afghan pine), Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine) and Comandra pallida, bastard toadflax Symptoms/signs: Comandra blister rust on Mondell pine. On Mondell pine, Comandra blister rust causes branch dieback and death of trees of all ages. Swollen areas produced on the alternate host, Comandra. These are develop in branches and trunks, and the bark and delicate spores that can travel in air currents only about underlying sapwood die. On pine, orange “blisters” one mile. During the first year, the fungus becomes develop on trunks and branches as the bark splits and established in pine bark, and swollen areas with fruiting ruptures. Infections on Comandra, the alternate host, structures (spermagonia) develop in branches and appear as orange or rusty colored pustules on leaves trunks. -

The summer of 2012 was long, hot and brutal, with drought afflicting most of the U.S. Most of my botanical explorations were restricted to Idaho, Wash- ington, Oregon and northern California but even there moisture was below average. In a year like this, seeps, swales, springs, vestigial snowbanks and localized rainstorms became much more important in my search for seeding plants. On the Snake River Plains of southern Idaho and the scab- lands of eastern Washington, early bloomers such as Viola beckwithii, V. trinervata, Ranunculus glaberrimus, Ranunculus andersonii, Fritillaria pudica and Primula cusickiana put on quite a show in mid-April but many populations could not set seed. In northern Idaho, Erythronium idahoense flowered extensively, whole meadows were covered with thousands of the creamy, pendant blossoms. One of my most satisfying finds in the Hells Canyon area had to be Sedum valens. The tiny glaucous rosettes, surround- ed by a ring of red leaves, are a succulent connoisseur’s dream. Higher up, the brilliant blue spikes of Synthyris missurica punctuated the canyon walls. In southern Oregon, the brilliant red spikes of Pedicularis densiflora lit up the Siskiyou forest floor. Further north in Oregon, large populations of Erythronium elegans, Erythronium oregonum ssp. leucandrum, Erythro- nium revolutum, trilliums and sedums provided wonderful picture-taking opportunities. Eriogonum species did well despite the drought, many of them true xerics. -

United States Department of Agriculture Native Forb Information Sheet Missouri Information Sheet IS-MO-643Native Forb Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Missouri Conservation Practice 643 December 2017 Native forbs, or broadleaf plants, are a natural part of the Missouri landscape. They welcomed European settlers to the state, painting the prairie and savanna landscapes with vibrant colors that changed throughout the season while supporting an incredible diversity of native wildlife. More than 800 plant species, most of them forbs, have been identified on Missouri’s prairies. Missourians are demonstrating a rekindled interest in native forbs for their beauty, hardiness, and wildlife benefits. Native forbs are well adapted to Missouri’s climatic extremes, which range from potentially brutal cold in January to the often stifling heat of July. Once established, native forbs require few inputs and little maintenance. Native forbs feature a variety of shapes, sizes, color, and value to wildlife. The towering compass plant, the vibrant butterfly milkweed, the rather plain but very valuable roundhead lespedeza, and the unique rattlesnake master all add important diversity to any planting. Choosing which ones to plant can be difficult; contact your local conservation agency representative, or one of the vendors of native forb seed for assistance. You can find a list at www.plant-materials.nrcs.usda.gov/mopmc, www.grownative.org, or www.monativeseed.org. Seed vendors can be excellent sources of information, and they are often as eager as you are for your planting to be successful. Refer to Table 1 in this document for general information about native forbs that are most often available commercially. -

Edwards 1888)), a Federal Endangered Species Act candidate species, is found in remnant colonies between extreme southwestern British Columbia and the southern Willamette Valley in Oregon. This butterfly and its habitat have declined precipitously largely due to anthropogenic impacts. However, this butterfly appears to benefit from some land management activities and some populations are dependent on an exotic hostplant. Oviposition sites determine what resources are available for larvae after they hatch. Larval survival and growth on three reported hostplants (Castilleja hispida, Plantago lanceolata, and P. major) were measured in captivity to determine the suitability of hostplant species and to develop captive rearing methods. Larvae successfully developed on C. hispida and P. lanceolata. Parameters of oviposition sites were measured within occupied habitat at four sites in Western Washington. Sampling occurred at two spatial scales with either complete site censuses or stratified systematic sampling on larger sites. Within the sampled or censused areas, oviposition sites were randomly selected for paired oviposition/adjacent non-oviposition microhabitat measurements. -

Family Fabaceae Plant description Mulford’s milkvetch is a perennial species with a long taproot and clustered, slender, wiry, thinly strigose stems, 3–20 cm long, arising from a woody, many-branched caudex. Leaves are 4–10 cm long including the petiole, with a flattened rachis and 11- 23 linear to elliptic leaflets, 0.3–0.8 cm long and nearly glabrous. Flowers are scattered, 5–20, in loose racemes on peduncles 5–8 cm long. The calyx is 0.28-0.5 cm long, strigose, with narrow triangular-subulate teeth slightly shorter than the tube. The corolla is whitish, drying yellow, the banner often bluish to purple lined or tinged, 0.5- 0.9 cm long. Pods are horizontally spreading, papery, inflated, 0.8-1.5 cm long, beaked, and almost triangular in cross-section. Valves are strigose and finely cross- veined, the ventral suture straight or curved slightly, the dorsal suture strongly curved. The slender stipe is 0.2-0.3 cm long. Distinguishing characteristics Mulford’s milkvetch is distinguished from the other Astragalus species with which it occurs by its small whitish flowers, its connate, sheath-forming lower stipules, and its pendulous, stipitate, three-faced pods. When to survey Surveys for Mulford’s milkvetch should be performed from May through June when the species is flowering and/or fruiting.
