Temple Emanu-El: Where You Belong • 248-967-4020 -3- Music Happenings at Temple

My article this month isn’t so much “Musical Happenings” as it is “Temple Happenings.” In January we celebrated our 65th year as a congregation. On November 11, 1951 a small group of Jews came together in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Bertram Kaatz “The purpose of the meeting was to form a local Jewish group and to define its purpose with regard to a meeting place, religious school, community center and possibleTemple.” By January 11, 1952 our congregation was established and by March 1955 “Congregation Emanu-El: The Suburban Temple of Greater Detroit” had a functioning religious school, an adult choir lead by Mrs. Eugene P. Sims, a brotherhood, sisterhood, Executive Board and a Board of Trustees, and had hired Rabbi (Dr.) Frank F. Rosenthal. March 13, 1955 they would be breaking ground for this wonderful building we know Cantorial Soloist and call our Temple home. Here are some words written by Rabbi Rosenthal in the March 4, 1955 bulletin Kelly Onickel commemorating this auspicious moment in our history; One of the most interesting and satisfying things in life is to see an idea take tangible form. To bring a dream out of the cham- bers of the mind and to translate it into the realm of reality is one of the marks of civilized human beings. Thus, March 13 will stand out in the hearts and minds of many of our devoted constituents as a milestone towards the fulfillment of a dream to make our Temple and the functions of our Congregation more real, more dynamic, and more purposeful. As we turn the earth that will carry the sanctuary that will build the glory of our Faith and tradition, we do it prayerfully and humbly. We see in this solemn act a re-creation of the efforts of Moses and Solomon of old and thousands of Jewish communities that come after them, in all climes and lands, who erected Temples and centers of Jewish learning and culture, and thus contribute to the survival of our people… In the prayer book, one reads, “Thy House is our Refuge, our but- tress, our strength, our bond with the past, our hope for the future, our fathers’ bequest and our children’s sacred trust.” With this prayer on his lips, the Jew has always made his Synagogue a center from which to transmit his great heritage… Our ancient Rabbis created an interesting pun based on the simi- larity of two Hebrew words. They identified the word “Banim” which means “children” with the word “Bonim” which means “builders”. In this manner, they wished to indicate that the children We Want You To Join of Israel must also be its builders. The Shiru Dor L’dor Every generation is called upon to create the structures which it needs for the transmission of its Jewish heritage to its children. We, Youth Choir of Congregation Emanu-El, must meet the challenge that we, like Calling all 4th, 5th, 6th, our ancestors, have the capacity to build.
