Rayner Introduction As we all know, the Emancipation was a great turning point in the history of Judaism, although ‘point' is hardly the right word, since it was a long-drawn- out process extending from the eighteenth century into the twentieth. Nevertheless the initial impact of it was often felt by a single generation, and in Germany by the generation of those born during the Napoleonic era. As we all know; too, the initial impact was for many of the newly emancipated German Jews a negative one so far as their Jewish religious life was concerned because the revolutionary educational, linguistic, cultural and social changes they experienced caused them to feel uncomfortable in the old- style synagogues. And as we all know as well, it is to this problem, of the alienation of emancipated Jewry from the traditional synagogue that the Reformers first and foremost addressed themselves. They believed that if only the synagogue services could be made more attractive, that would halt and perhaps reverse w the drift. 0 . _ {:1 j N In retrospect we can see that they were only partly right. There are other 8E}; factors besides the nature of synagogue worship which determine or influence the extent to which individuals will affirm their Jewish identity \ :8 " and adhere to their Jewish faith, and subsequent generations of Reformers 13E came to recognise that and to address themselves to these other issues also. (3 ‘1‘: Nevertheless the nature of synagogue worship is clearly a factor, and a big one. -

This picture, whether in a film, on a poster, or in reality, is one of Tel Aviv, the self-proclaimed “Gay Capital of the Middle East.”1 It is the most popular and well-known image of the Israeli LGBT community. The history of LGBT rights in Israel predates that of many Western nations, including the United States. Israeli gay rights ensure that all LGBT citizens receive many of the same rights to their heterosexual counterparts, albeit with less publicized shortfalls in terms of health, edu- cation and welfare laws. The greatest exception and the most significant encroachment of faith onto the legality of homosexuality is in the lack of legal gay marriage in Israel. Alongside their crafting of legal rights, the Israeli government has invested heavily in the coastal city of Tel Aviv, rebranding it as a globally recognized “gay destination.” This effort resulted in a fiscally beneficial gay tourism industry and a more positive international reputation for Israel. -

At last Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have sworn chesed (faithful loyalty and lovingkindness) to each other in the Yahweh’s name. The Lord is the witness of a bond between us and our children forever” (I Sam. 20:42). Mephibosheth was a son of Jonathan, who had been crippled as a boy of five years old, when his nurse dropped him in the flight after the defeat at the Battle of Gliboa (2 Samuel 4:4). Mephibosheth was by this time in his 20s (David had reigned in Hebron 7 years, and now Mephibosheth has a son, Micha). So at the time of this story, David was about in the middle of his 40-year reign. We can see a contrast between the destinies of the House of Saul and the House of David— David came dancing and whirling into Jerusalem; the surviving member of the House of Saul comes limping into Jerusalem, crippled in both legs. The name “Mephibosheth” means “from the mouth of shame” (similar to his uncle’s name, Saui’s son, Ish-bosheth” means “man of shame”). A particularly poignant story, as the king demonstrates his chesed to one who feels so undeserving, and who indeed fears he may have been summoned to the king to face death, in that all the rest of the House of Saul had been eliminated… but where sin abounded, chesed did much more abound… The King lifts Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, in chesed. -

After outlining the myth and illustrating that many Americans of all backgrounds had subscribed to this belief by the early 1990s, the project challenges the narrative of black homophobia by highlighting black urban neighborhoods in the first half of the twentieth century that permitted and even occasionally celebrated open displays of queerness. By the 1960s, however, the black communities that had hosted overt queerness were no longer recognizable, as the public balls, private parties, and other spaces where same-sex contacts took place were driven underground. This shift resulted from the rise of the black Civil Rights Movement, whose middle-class leadership – often comprised of ministers from the black church – rigorously promoted the respectability of the race. -

Same-Sex Desire and Jewish Community: Queering Biblical Texts in Canadian and American Jewish Literature Shlomo Gleibman York University It has been asserted that queer subjectivity can be realized in identifications with 249 certain images of mainstream culture, sometimes to a far greater extent than in “con- ventional” forms of gay life (Sedgwick, Tendencies; Butler, Bodies; Munoz; Halperin, How). These nonlinear, nonnormative identifications and disidentifications partici- pate in the formation of multiple, hybrid identities through working on, with, and against a dominant cultural form (Munoz 3-8, 30). This essay looks at Jewish queer narratives in their relation to mainstream Jewish culture, as examples of contem- porary forms of Jewish literary imagination in North America. I am interested in exploring the ways Jewish queer culture workers read a queer valence that is already present within Jewish intellectual life in its traditional form-potentially or in actual- ity in individual experiences, and imaginatively, as a rhetorical trope in some modes of literature. The queer possibilities in reading classical Jewish texts could be better under- stood in light of the Foucauldian theory of polyvalence of discourse, developed in The History of Sexuality. This theory regards discourse as never unified or fixed, but rather as “a series of discontinuous segments, not uniform nor stable, multiplicity of discursive elements that can come into play in various strategies” (Foucault 100). In this sense, the queer valence present in classical Jewish texts and in traditional patterns of studying these texts does not constitute “homoeroticism” as a uniform narrative or as a coherent element of a larger narrative; rather, this “queer kernel” could name a play of multiple “discontinuous segments” that lend themselves to cer- tain modes of reception.
