Doctors to the Stars
Chapter 21 Doctors to the Stars And also under the (Obama) healthcare plan, pop stars will still be able to choose their own creepy personal physicians. So that’ll be good. – David Letterman People have always been fascinated with celebrities – and doctors have always been willing to line up to treat them. Going back to antiquity, kings and pharaohs had their personal physicians and today’s political elites are no different. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have also seen the rise of a new generation of gods walk- ing among us, the “superstars.” These darlings of the paparazzi include professional athletes, musicians, artists, actors and actresses, religious icons, as well as some celebrities of dubious talent. Nowadays, celebrities routinely have their “court physicians.” These are the descendents of the doctors of yesteryear who “helped” their patients with leeches, bloodletting, enemas, and emetics; only now they use pills, syringes, and prescrip- tion pads to mollify their petulant clients. This Faustian doctor/patient relationship can make the physicians rich and famous – or leave them destitute, discredited or imprisoned. Dr. Feelgood Fame, money and influence, are often close companions of fate, prompting dangerous self indulgence. While it is true that alcohol abuse and drug addiction are running rampant in Western society at all socioeconomic levels, many people only seem to notice when one of the “beautiful people” are afflicted with these maladies. Celebrities are often surrounded by an entourage or “posse” of close friends who are only too willing to make sure that the gravy train is kept running. These freeloading valets perform a variety of duties for their bosses including thorough ego stroking, scoring drugs, ordering pizza, and dialing 911 in case of an overdose. -

The general rule of law is that the noblest of human produc- tions-knowledge, truths ascertained, conceptions, and ideas- become, after voluntary communication to others, free as the air to common use. -Justice Brandeis I. INTRODUCTION A. Warning: Some Rights in Titles Are Not Assignable Rules protecting titles in the entertainment industry may confuse, agitate and even exasperate the experienced lawyer who would like to answer the simple question: Does the owner of a copyrighted work own its title? Somewhere between the fringe areas of trademark law and the shadow of copyright, courts give effect to contract clauses that transfer titles in agreements between sellers and buyers of literary works. -

Travel Writing and Satire James D. Sumner Royal Holloway College
1 Travel Writing and Satire James D. Sumner Royal Holloway College PhD in English University of London 2013 2 Declaration of Authorship I, James D. Sumner, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 3 Abstract: 1) Critical Component: The purpose of my thesis is to explore the history of British travel writing and to consider how the literature of exploration, which initially presented itself as factual, evolved into the fictional use of travel writing. In order to provide a context for travel writing, I will be looking at the work of Porter, Mills, Pratt, Chard, Hulme and Youngs before discussing the Grand Tourist (1660-1837) and the growth of mass tourism under Thomas Cook. In order to consider early-twentieth-century travel writing in this context of mass tourism, I propose to engage specifically with Peter Fleming’s Brazilian Adventure (1933) and Robert Byron’s The Road to Oxiana (1937). Evelyn Waugh, at various times, acted both as a friend and a reviewer to both Byron and Fleming. The thesis will then focus upon Evelyn Waugh’s work and look at the differences between his travel writing and the fictional use of travel in his fiction. Waugh’s writing style has been important to me in the development of my own. As Waugh wrote in his review of Peter Fleming’s Brazilian Adventure (1933), ‘the trouble about all forms of writing is that one is working against a background of predecessors and contemporaries.’ 1 Thus in my last chapter, I will discuss someone whom Waugh influenced, namely Malcolm Bradbury. -

Salon All Hail the Bitch Goddess!
CAMILLE PAGLIA AND GLENN BELVERIO (THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS GLENNDA ORGASM) PAY HOMAGE TO THE QUEEN OF CAMP, JACQUELINE SUSANN EDITOR'S NOTE: Jacqueline Susann has risen! In October, Grove Press re-released the late novelist's campy 1966 blockbuster, "Valley of the Dolls," which had been out of print for 15 years. On Nov. 14-15, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art held a "Jacqueline Susann Weekend," featuring a screening of the 20th Century Fox film based on the novel, starring Patty Duke, Barbara Parkins and Sharon Tate. And earlier this week, Fox released the film on video for the first time. In honor of this Jackie S. revival, Salon's Camillle Paglia engaged in a Platonic dialogue with her friend and video collaborator, Glenn Belverio, the Artist Formerly Known as Glennda Orgasm. A New York fashion stylist, Belverio is assistant fashion editor of Irish Marie Claire, as well as of Madison magazine, premiering in spring 1998. Paglia: We are here to honor our Uranian Aphrodite and our Diotima, Jacqueline Susann -- goddess, priestess, Muse! Belverio: It's about time that tribute is being paid to Jacqueline Susann, because so much of pop culture now is informed by what she did -- "Melrose Place" and so on. I mean, people go on and on about Jackie Collins and the dirty books that she wrote, but no one realizes that Jacqueline Susann started that whole genre of adult books. Paglia: Harold Robbins also deserves credit. It was Susann and Robbins together who are the fonts of so much contemporary discourse about pop. -

PRAISE FOR JERRY Jay CARROLL “Jerry Jay Carroll’s sequel to his clever debut novel, Top Dog, leaves the door open to yet a third book in the series; the ending alone will leave readers beg- ging for more … The novel’s best passages—which should not be read late at night—come when Bogey is stalked by rapacious pig-faced assassins. Equally entertaining (at any time of day) is Carroll’s giddy, cynical take on political campaigns.” —New York Times “A stylish, funny combination of parable and moral tale … Imaginative, seduc- tively written, and a pleasure to read.Top Dog is a first rate entertainment.” —Richard North Patterson “A witty, adult and imaginative fable.” —Martin Cruz Smith “If Kafka and Tolkien shared an office on Wall Street, this is the novel they might have written.” —San Francisco Chronicle “A captivating romp.” Grade: A —Entertainment Weekly “The Shaggy Dog meets J.R.R. Tolkien in this entertaining debut effort. The premise is wildly silly and metaphorically transparent and has absolutely no right to succeed on any level, but Carroll—through a combination of rea- sonably swift pacing and gruffly funny internal monologues—pulls it off.” —Kirkus Reviews “Carroll’s tight, colorful prose proves zesty and absorbing. His characters ring oddly true. And his plot has touches of that Tolkienesque irresistibility, that thing that keeps you up past bedtime turning pages to learn what hap- pens next.” —San Francisco Chronicle “I stumbled upon this gem while wandering the shelves of a half-price book- store. I’m so happy I picked it up. -
