A Survey of the Unaccompanied Violin Repertoire, Centering on Works by Js ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: A SURVEY OF THE UNACCOMPANIED VIOLIN REPERTOIRE, CENTERING ON WORKS BY J. S. BACH AND EUGENE YSAŸE Yu-Chi Wang, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2005 Dissertation directed by: Professor Gerald Fischbach School of Music Unaccompanied works provide a great challenge for violinists. The violin was originally designed to be performed with the support of other instruments. In addition, composers have developed various advanced techniques to enrich their solo violin compositions, for example to create polyphonic effects or to showcase the instrument’s capabilities or a performer’s virtuosity. Thereby, these works have become known for their technical challenges. A violinist thus faces unusual demands and stresses when performing solo violin works alone on the concert stage and may also use these pieces for musically gratifying and rigorous personal study. For this dissertation project, a selected series of unaccompanied violin works ranging from the Baroque period to the twentieth century have been performed in two recitals, recorded for archival purposes, and discussed in this written document. I have primarily chosen solo violin pieces written by the German composer J. S. Bach (1685–1750) and the Belgian composer Eugene Ysaÿe (1858–1931). I have also chosen to study works by Heinrich Biber (1644–1704) and Bright Sheng (b. 1955) as Biber exemplifies a predecessor of J. S. Bach’s and Sheng serves as one of Eugene Ysaÿe’s followers. The first recital, performed on May 8, 2002 in the Ulrich Recital Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park, included Passacaglia in G Minor (1676) by Heinrich Biber; Partita No. 3 in E Major (1720) by J.S. Bach; and Sonata no. 2, op. 27 (1923) by Eugene Ysaÿe. The second recital, performed on May 11, 2003 in the Main Chapel of the Memorial Chapel at the University of Maryland, College Park, included Sonata in G Minor (1720) by J.S. Bach; Sonata no. 4, op. 27 (1923) by Eugene Ysaÿe; and The Stream Flows (1990) by Bright Sheng. The written portion of this project presents a history of the solo violin genre, an overview of each composer’s life, and a discussion of connections and influences among the composers and their works through time. I also suggest fingerings, bowings, technical solutions, and musical interpretations of these pieces based upon my experiences in their study and performance. Cornell University 2011 The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a novel reading of the steady decline that instrumental virtuosity underwent in its critical reception between c. 1815 and c. 1850, represented here by a selection of the most influential music periodicals edited in Europe at that time. In contemporary philosophy, the same period saw, on the one hand, the reconceptualization of music (especially of instrumental music) from ―pleasant nonsense‖ (Sulzer) and a merely ―agreeable art‖ (Kant) into the ―most romantic of the arts‖ (E. T. A. Hoffmann), a radically disembodied, aesthetically autonomous, and transcendent art and on the other, the growing suspicion about the tenability of the free subject of the Enlightenment. This dissertation‘s main claim is that those three developments did not merely coincide but, rather, that the changes in the aesthetics of music and the philosophy of subjectivity around 1800 made a deep impact on the contemporary critical reception of instrumental virtuosity. More precisely, it seems that instrumental virtuosity was increasingly regarded with suspicion because it was deemed incompatible with, and even threatening to, the new philosophic conception of music and via it, to the increasingly beleaguered notion of subjective freedom that music thus reconceived was meant to symbolize.

Fugal theory according to musica poetica sources includes both contrapuntal devices and structural principles. Johann Mattheson’s dispositio model for organizing instrumental music provides an approach to comprehending the process of Baroque composition. His view on the construction of a subject also offers a way to observe a subject’s transformation in the fugal process. While fugal writing was considered the essential compositional technique for developing musical ideas in the Baroque era, a successful musical-rhetorical dispositio can shape the fugue from a simple subject into a convincing and coherent work. With the Restoration (and the return of Charles II from France) Lully and the French manner of playing certainly prevailed for a time. But with the ar- rival of famous violinists from abroad such as Thomas Baltzar and Nicola Matteis the English were exposed to fresh influences. The holding of the bow (the bow grip), the placement of the instrument against the body, the kinds of sonorities used on the instrument, all underwent decisive changes. These new techniques and aspects of playing undoubtedly had an effect on Purcell in his Sonnata's of III Parts for two violins and continuo (composed about 1680 and published in 1683). The "French Grip" John Playford described the bow grip commonly used in England around mid-century and thereafter: The Bow is held in the right Hand between the ends of the Thumb and three Fingers, the Thumb being stay'd upon the Hair at die Nut, and the three Fingers resting upon the Wood.

The Boston Conservatory November 2019 Committee Chair: Won-Bin Yim, D.M.A. Abstract Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst was a Moravian violinist and composer who lived between 1814-1865. He was a friend of Brahms, collaborator with Mendelssohn, and was admired by Berlioz and Joachim. He was known as a violin virtuoso and composed many virtuosic works including an arrangement of Schubert’s Erlkönig for solo violin. The focus of this document will be on his Six Etudes for Solo Violin in Multiple Voices (also known as the Six Polyphonic Etudes). These pieces were published without opus number around 1862-1864. The etudes combine many different technical challenges with musical sensitivity. They were so difficult that the composer never gave a public performance of them. No. 6 is the most famous of the set, and has been performed by soloists in recent years. Ernst takes the difficulty level to the extreme and combines different layers of techniques within one hand. For example, the second etude has a passage that combines chords and left-hand pizzicato, and the sixth etude has a passage that combines harmonics with double stops. Etudes from other composers might contain these techniques but not simultaneously. The polyphonic nature allows for this layering of difficulties in Ernst’s Six Polyphonic Etudes.

    Organ Interpretation Competition for the Johann Pachelbel Award at the 69th ION Music Festival 26 June - 02 July 2020 A WARM INVITATION TO NUREMBERG For 52 years, young artists have been invited to come to Nuremberg in early summer to give proof of their artistic prowess to a jury comprised of prominent experts. The climax of this process has always been the presentation of the widely known Johann Pachelbel Award. And so again we issue an invitation to register for this prestigious international interpretation competition in 2020. What is it all about? The organ interpretation competition is looking for organists who in their young careers have already achieved independent interpretation of significant works of organ literature. But it will also seek interaction with contemporary works. And expect competitors to be able to deal with both the soundscapes and playing technique of historical organs and to cope with the possibilities and challenges of modern instruments. At the same time, this interpretation competition explicitly demands not only technical skills, but also looks for interpretations which are courageous, sometimes leaving matters open, finding new aspects in well-known works, and eliciting unique sounds from the instruments themselves – feeding on the tension between tradition and future perspectives. And of course, the sequence of works, the organists’ programming and sometimes the link between the individual compositions to be played is of special interest to the jurors. This is all about a contemporary way of dealing with the history of music and instruments. From the first round on, the competition will be public. The final will be an integral element of the festival programme of the 69th ION Music Festival, staged in the world famous Old Town of Nuremberg, and played on the Peter organ of St Sebaldus’ Church.
