Geographies of the Space Elevator in Science Fiction Oliver Dunnett Outer space is often presented as a kind of universal global commons – a space for all humankind, against which the hopes and dreams of humanity have been projected. Yet, since the advent of spaceflight, it has become apparent that access to outer space has been limited, shaped and procured in certain ways. Geographical approaches to the study of outer space have started to interrogate the ways in which such inequalities have emerged and sustained themselves, across environmental, cultural and political registers. For example, recent studies have understood outer space as increasingly foreclosed by certain state and commercial actors (Beery 2012), have emphasised narratives of tropical difference in understanding geosynchronous equatorial satellite orbits (Dunnett 2019) and, more broadly, have conceptualised the Solar System as part of Earth’s environment (Degroot 2017). It is clear from this and related literature that various types of infrastructure have been a significant part of the uneven geographies of outer space, whether in terms of long-established spaceports (Redfield 2000), anticipatory infrastructures (Gorman 2009) or redundant space hardware orbiting Earth as debris (Klinger 2019). collection no. 003 • Infrastructure on/off Earth Roadsides Stairway to Heaven? 43 Having been the subject of speculation in both engineering and science-fictional discourses for many decades, the space elevator has more recently been promoted as a “revolutionary and efficient way to space for all humanity” (ISEC 2017). The concept involves a tether lowered from a position in geostationary orbit to a point on Earth’s equator, along which an elevator can ascend and arrive in orbit. -

SoUTheRN FANDOM CONFEDeRATiON UPDATE VoLUMe 1, ISsUE 10 OCToBEr 2009 2 Musings of a Faned It’s been a busy month, what with Dragon*Con and FenCon, plus planning for the NASFiC and my usual fannish stuff. I’ve decided to try something new in the SFCU – reviews. I was reading Chris Garcia’s editorial in Science Fiction/San Francisco , and realized that he was right – there’s a paucity of reviews in fanzines these days. So I decided to do the only rational thing I could – start working on the problem, and encourage my friends to help. Oh, and I fired off a letter of comment to SF/SF challenging Chris to become a part of the solution – for every review he sends me, I’ll send him a LoC (he’s got enough zines that I’m in no real danger of doubling up – SF/SF , The Drink Tank , Claims Department , Journey Planet , and Exhibition Hall , all of which I read on www.efanzines.com ). Also, at FenCon, I ran into Brad Foster, and while talking about fanzine art, realized that he was right – I hadn’t used all of the work he’d sent me. So this issue’s cover boasts one of his drawings, which fit remarkably well with the font I chose for the cover. It’s a small cover illo, but then, this zine has a really big title, and I like to make it flashy. There are other fanartists from Texas I’d like to start featuring, too, and I need to email them. -

Given the diversity of sci-fi genres, a researcher always deals either with the direct representation of the Other (a crea- ture different from an existing human being), or with its indirect, mediated form when the Other, in the original sense of this term, is revealed to the reader or viewer through the optics of some Other World. The article describes two modes of representing the Other by sci-fi literature, conventionally designated as scientist and anti-anthropic. Thescientist representa- tion constructs exclusively-rational premises for the relationship with the Other. Edmund Husserl’s concept of truth, which is the same for humans, non-humans, angels, and gods, can be considered as its historical and philosophical correlate. The anti-anthropic representa- tion, which is more attractive to sci-fi authors, has its origins in the experience of the “dis- enchantment” of the world characteristic of modern man, especially in the tragic feeling of incommensurability of a finite human existence and the infinity of the cosmic abysses. -

"The Love Token of a Token Immigrant": Judith Merril's Expatriate Narrative, 1968-1972 by Jolene McCann A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Jolene McCann, 2006 Abstract Judith Merril was an internationally acclaimed science fiction (sf) writer and editor who expatriated from the United States to Canada in November 1968 with the core of what would become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy in Toronto. Merril chronicled her transition from a nominal American or "token immigrant" to an authentic Canadian immigrant in personal documents and a memoir, Better to Have Loved: the Life of Judith Merril (2002). I argue that Sidonie Smith's travel writing theory, in particular, her notion of the "expatriate narrative" elucidates Merril's transition from a 'token' immigrant to a representative token of the American immigrant community residing in Toronto during the 1960s and 1970s. I further argue that Judith Merril's expatriate narrative links this personal transition to the simultaneous development of her science fiction library from its formation at Rochdale College to its donation by Merril in 1970 as a special branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL). For twenty-seven years after Merril's expatriation from the United States, the Spaced Out Library cum Merril Collection - her love-token to the city and the universe - moored Merril politically and intellectually in Toronto. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Dianne Newell for introducing me to the Merril Collection and sharing her extensive collection of primary sources on science fiction and copies of Merril's correspondence with me, as well as for making my visit to the Merril Collection at the Library and Archives of Canada, Ottawa possible.
