Coxiella burnetii, is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium, adapted to thrive within the phagolysosome of the phagocyte. Humans become infected primarily by inhaling aerosols that are contaminated with C. burnetii. Ingestion (particularly drinking raw milk) and person-to-person transmission are minor routes. Animals shed the bacterium in urine and feces, and in very high concentrations in birth by-products. The bacterium persists in the environment in a resistant spore-like form which may become airborne and transported long distances by the wind. Japanese encephalitis has emerged as a major problem in several states and every year several outbreaks of Japanese encephalitis are reported from different parts of the country. Resurgence of Kala-azar in mid seventies in Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand still continues to be a major public health concern. Efforts are being made to initiate kala-azar elimination programme by the year 2010. Rabies continues to be an important killer in the country.

In 1893 Swami Vivekananda (1863 –1902), a young disciple of the celebrated Hindu “avatar” (manifestation of God) Sri Ramakrishna (1836 –1886), spoke at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago and won an enthusiastic American following with his genteel manner and erudite presentation. Over the next few years, he inaugurated the first Eastern religious movement in America: the Vedanta Societies of various cities, independent of one another but under the spiritual leadership of the Ramakrishna Order in India. In 1920 a second Hindu missionary effort was launched in America when a comparably charismatic “neo -Vedanta” swami, Paramahansa Yogananda, was invited to speak at the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, sponsored by the Unitarian Church. After the Congress, Yogananda lectured across the country, spellbinding audiences with his immense charm and powerful presence. In 1925 he established the headquarters for his Self -Realization Fellowship (SRF) in Los Angeles on the site of a former hotel atop Mount Washington. He was the first Eastern guru to take up permanent residence in the United States after creating a following here. The diseases that are reportable to state and local health departments differ from state to state; however, certain diseases are considered nationally notifiable diseases. The list of nationally notifiable diseases is updated annually. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), publishes case definitions for public health surveillance for the nationally notifiable diseases. These case definitions provide uniform criteria for reporting cases and are case specific. The case status for most diseases is determined as follows: • A confirmed case is one in which the clinical case description is met and the laboratory confirmation requirement is met. A case may also be considered confirmed if it is linked to a laboratory-confirmed case. Certain diseases may not include laboratory findings as testing is not available. • A probable case is one in which the clinical case description is met and there is supportive or presumptive laboratory results consistent with the diagnosis but, it does not meet the laboratory confirmed criteria. • A suspect case is one in which the clinical case description is met. • A revoked case is one in which neither the suspect, probable, nor confirmed case definition is met. In the fields of salmonellosis and shigellosis, important new epidemiological and relatedfindings that have implications for the control of these infections are described. Priority research activities in each ofthese areas are outlined. Of the organisms discussed in this article, Campylobacter jejuni and Yersinia entero- colitica have only recently been recognized as important causes of enteric infection, and accordingly the available knowledge on these pathogens is reviewed in full. In the better- known fields of salmonellosis (including typhoid fever) and shigellosis, the review is limited to new and important information that has implications for their control.! Although this organism was suspected of being a cause ofacute enteritis in man as early as 1954, it was not until 1972, in Belgium, that it was first shown to be a relatively common cause of diarrhoea. Since then, workers in Australia, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States of America have reported its isolation from 5-14% of diarrhoea cases and less than 1 % of asymptomatic persons. Most of the information given below is based on conclusions drawn from these studies in developed countries.

    Chapter 2 Spirituality in India: The Ever Growing Banyan Tree Comparing Western and Indian knowledge, Rolland (1960, p. 91) described Western knowledge as the “science of facts” and spirituality as “the science of the soul, a peculiarly Indian science.” A major difference between philosophy and spirituality, or for that matter religion and spirituality, is that spirituality, as prac- ticed in India, has an action bias over and above cognitive (thinking or thoughts) or value (considering something important) concerns. Spirituality has been valued in the Indian culture from time immemorial, and it is no surprise that many innova- tions in the field of spirituality originated in India. Since people strive to excel in areas that are compatible with their cultural values, India has seen the emergence of many geniuses in the field of spirituality even in the modern times. I combine two qualitative methods, historical analysis and case analysis, to document how spirituality is valued in India, and much like a banyan tree, how it continues to grow even today. An examination of the life of the list of spiritual gurus presented in the chapter shows that they were all practitioners, and they practiced what they preached. Also, the case analysis shows that Ramakrishna was a practitioner, and both the Maharishi and Rajneesh recommended daily practice of meditation. A historical evolution of spirituality in India is traced by generating a list of spiritual gurus over the last 2,500 years by using published sources both in the West (Kroeber, 1944) and in India. Following this historical analysis, three case studies are presented to illustrate that spirituality is valued even today in India, and this culture continues to produce eminent spiritual gurus.

    2. JERRY KATZ Jerry Katz founded Nonduality Salon in 1998, the first online place where people could speak freely about nonduality without the hovering presence of a specific teacher or tradition. This kind of a free, unaffiliated, and independent nonduality was novel in its time. Thus a "people's nonduality" was born. Free of bonds to academia, a guru, or an tradition -- but friendly to all -- it attracted independent realizers and seekers. Through blogging, social media, and in-person gatherings, "people's nonduality" has grown to become a cultural/spiritual niche. Jerry also started the first independent nonduality website, Nonduality.com. His newsletter, the Nonduality Highlights, has published over 4500 issues since 1999. He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he holds regular satsangs. He travels around the world to share the message of nonduality. Through all these efforts, Jerry Katz has believed that the word "nonduality", or some form of it, is a teaching in itself, since anyone looking up the meaning of the word could enter into a radically new world view. www.nonduality.com.
