EBENEZER ADODO Nigeria Thesis Title Problems of documentary compliance in letters of credit law and practice Supervisors Emeritus Professor EP Ellinger & Professor Tan Yock Lin Ebenezer is currently a doctoral scholar at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. He holds LL.B (Hons) and LL.M degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile‐Ife, Nigeria, and an LL.M degree by research from the National University of Singapore. From September 2001 to July 2004, he was a lecturer in law (Assistant Professor equivalent) at the College of Law, Igbinedion University, Nigeria. Prior to that time, he was in private legal practice and a human rights activist. Ebenezer is a research active academic, with a number of publications in peer‐reviewed international periodicals such as Hong Kong Law Journal, Singapore Journal of Legal Studies, Journal International Banking Law & Regulation, Journal of Private International Law, Journal of Business Law, and King’s College Law Journal; and is also a frequent speaker at international conferences. JASON R. BONIN USA Thesis Title Air Transport Liberalization in East Asia Supervisor Professor Alan Tan Jason R. Bonin is a doctoral candidate and research scholar at NUS Faculty of Law. His research currently focuses on regional air transport liberalization and integration in the East Asian region. Prior to joining the doctoral programme at NUS, he studied at the University of Florida (B.A. 1999‐2001; J.D. 2002‐2004) and Universiteit Leiden (LL.M. 2006‐2007). He has published articles in the areas of air and space law. Chan is Lecturer in Law at the University of Waikato Faculty of Law. He has published over 30 international refereed journal articles and book chapters, and was Guest Editor of International Journal of Human Rights special double issues on Equality in Asia‐Pacific: Reality or a Contradiction in Terms? (2007) and Protection of Sexual Minorities since Stonewall: Progress and Stalemate in Developed and Developing Countries (2009), both also published as Routledge books with Forewords by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He has served in visiting research positions at Cambridge, Keele, St Andrews, ANU, Ottawa, Toronto, Freiburg and Vanderbilt. LUU HUONG LY Vietnam Thesis Title Competition Law in Socialist Countries: Experience from China and Vietnam Supervisor Dr Robert Ian McEwin I graduated from Hanoi Law University in Vietnam in 2004 as First Laureate and was given a Certificate of merit from the Chairman of Hanoi’s People’s Committee for this studying result. After that, I worked for Hanoi Law University as a lecturer in International Trade Law and International Commercial Law from 2004 to 2008. At the same time of working there, I did my LLM course and received my LLM degree in 2007. In 2008, I was given the ASEAN Nationals Graduate Scholarship to do my LLM course in International and Comparative Law at the National University of Singapore (Faculty of Law) and received my degree in 2009. I am now continue my studying in NUS as a PhD Candidate and I have been receiving the Research Scholarship by Ministry of Education of Singapore since 2009. I have published several articles in international trade law and commercial law in some well‐known Vietnamese journals as well as presentations in international and domestic workshops held in Vietnam. OKECHUKWU BENJAMIN VINCENTS Nigeria Thesis Title Internet Surveillance Technologies and the Right to Privacy: an International Perspective Supervisor Assoc Prof Daniel Seng Okechukwu Benjamin Vincents is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore. He held an NUS Graduate Research Scholarship from 2006 to 2010. He also held the President’s Graduate Fellowship from 2006 to 2007. Both awards are reserved for outstanding research scholars at NUS. He had his undergraduate and professional (barrister and Solicitor) education in Nigeria and his LL.M degrees in Sweden (Lund and Uppsala Universities). He has completed research on his PhD thesis and is now awaiting examiners report. His areas of interest and expertise include: Information Technology Law, Human Rights Law and Copyrights Law. EDNA SELLORIQUEZ PANA Philippines Thesis Title Golf and the Environment: A Comparative Study of Legal, Regulatory and Governance Frameworks in Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore Supervisor Associate Professor Lye Lin Heng Edna Selloriquez Pana (LLB, San Sebastian College‐Recoletos) was admitted to the practice of Law by the Supreme Court of the Philippines in 1994. She has worked as a Corporate lawyer for 12 years, specializing in property development and securities registration. Edna has an LLM in Environmental Law from the University of London (Queen Mary College, 2004) and is currently a PhD student at NUS, with a dissertation topic about Golf, Environment and the Law in the Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam and Singapore: A Cross‐National Comparative Study in Relation to Golf Course Development and Operation. Edna is an expert in golf course development and management, having worked in a golf course company for more than 10 years. She is currently the President and CEO of Tat Filipinas Golf Club, a privately owned Japanese‐designed and membership club in the Philippines. GATOT SOEMARTONO Indonesia Thesis Title Arbitration of Foreign Investment Dispute in Indonesia Supervisor Assoc Prof Gary F Bell & Adjunct Assoc Prof Lawrence Boo Gatot Soemartono holds senior lectureship in law at Tarumanagara University in Jakarta, Indonesia. He obtained a BSc in Economics from Diponegoro University (1987), an LLB (1989) and an MSc in Management (1993) both from Gadjah Mada University, an LL.M. (1997) from Harvard Law School as well as other certificates from Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management. Apart from teaching, he has written books and articles and has collaborated with some public bodies on important projects. Currently he is pursuing a doctorate in law at the National University of Singapore (NUS). PHIR PAUNGMALIT Thailand Thesis Title Trade Measures to Address Competitiveness Concerns from Climate Change Policy: Limits and Options of International Trade Law Supervisor Assoc Prof Simon Tay Phir is originally from Bangkok, Thailand. He received an LLM degree from Duke University and a LLB degree from Chulalongkorn University. His research interests are on the law of World Trade Organization and conflict of norms in public international law. He is also interested in international environmental issues and the law behind them. In his free time, Phir enjoys meditation and sports. TAN LAY HONG Singapore Thesis Title Does Law and Politics matter in the Separation of Ownership and Control in Singapore’s Top 100 Companies? Supervisor Prof Tan Cheng Han, S.C. TAN LAY HONG, L.LB (2nd Upper Honours) (NUS), L.LM (Merit) (King’s College, University of London) joined Nanyang Business School, NTU in 1992, and since then had conducted extensive research on China business law and corporate governance. Her research findings have been published in reputable journals such as Journal of World Investment (Switzerland) and International and Comparative Law Quarterly (U.K) and The Journal of Corporate Law Studies (U.K). She teaches a post‐graduate MBA course on China Business Law and co‐authored three books, namely: China Business Law: A Guide for Lawyers and Entrepreneurs, Corporate Governance of Listed Companies in Singapore and Casebook on Corporate Governance Best Practices in Singapore: The Good, Bad and Ugly. TRINH HAI YEN Vietnamese Thesis Title ASEAN Investment Arbitration Supervisor Professor M Sornarajah Ms. TRINH Hai Yen has been a lecturer of international law at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam since 2001. She was also visiting lecturer at the Hanoi University of Law and the Hanoi University and Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. She participated in researches on policy recommendations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and NGOs in Vietnam regarding international law and Vietnam’s domestic law. Ms. Trinh graduated in international relations from Vietnam’s Institute for International Relations and completed her Master in Law and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA. She is currently a PhD Candidate in Law at the National University of Singapore. Her research interests and publications are mainly on international investment law, WTO law, and international environment law. .
