They are all wearing 1925-26 plates. Bartons were Dodge & GB importers. The cabs were built in Mangaweka and the two GB Trucks went to Kilkolly Transport, Mataroa. As often happens, one truck ended up as a trailer on a farm, I located it on Murray McKurrow’s farm east of Utiku, a deal was struck and back to Taihape it came.     Founder: Robert Craig Hupp 1876-1931 After working at the Oldsmobile, Ford and Regal factories, Hupp founded the Hupp Motor Car Company in Detroit in 1908 with J. Walter Drake, a former lawyer, in the position of company President. His first car, the Model 20, which he named 'Hupmobile' was a two-seater runabout powered by a 2.8 litre four cylinder engine with high tension magneto and a two-speed sliding gear transmission. It was shown at the Detroit Auto Show in February 1909 and was sold as a competitor to the Model T Ford. Designed by Hupp and E. A. Nelson, it sold well and between March and December 1909 a total of 1618 cars had been delivered. In May 1910, Robert Hupp formed and became President of the Hupp Corporation, which included the Hupp-Yeats Electric Car Company, the Hupp-Turner Machine Co. and the Hupp-Johnson Forge Co. Charles D. Hastings was appointed vice-president and his brother Louis Hupp was made secretary/treasurer. During 1910 and 1911, a further 11,419 cars were built by the Hupp Motor Car Co. and a larger four seater car was introduced in 1911. But Robert Hupp had disagreements with his partners in the Hupp Motor Car Co. because he paid too much attention to the Hupp Corporation and in September 1911, he sold his shares and left the company to found the RCH Company. (formed 1967) Our 46th Annual Static Display is a Success (Report & more Photos inside) President’s Report 2019 Maybe it’s just me, but 2019 seemed to whiz by in no time. A year ago, I was honoured to step into the role of Club President, a daunting task when you look at the people who have held the role over the previous 50 plus years. But as I suspected would be the case, the Committee and Club members worked hard to make sure I was fully supported. And so for me it’s been a fantastic year, and I’m hoping other members feel much the same. With 100 plus members in the Club and more joining at a steady clip, there’s 100 versions of what happened in 2019, but here’s mine: We started the new club-year with a Saturday run, followed by a static display at the Morningside School of Arts the following day. The new venue for our display proved to be an excellent choice with lots of room to park the cars, plenty of options for coffee, and no end of inquisitive locals wanting to know more about our cars. While we had a great selection of A7s on display, there was one that grabbed lots of attention and that was Stacy Curtis’s sports. It was no surprise that Stacy walked away with the People’s Choice Award, and I’m guessing Ted was chuffed with the result. From one display to another, in September we had a strong contingent attend the All British Day.

    LEFT: Stately 1910 Winton Six Model 17-B touring was powered by a 48.6hp, inline six. It rode on a 124-inch wheelbase chassis and sold new for $3,000, a princely sum in 1910. The Winton Motor Carriage Co. was founded in 1897 by the famed engineer, Alexander Winton. BOTTOM LEFT: Cute red touring car is a 1913 Stanley Steamer Model 70. At one time, there were 125 automakers offering steam-powered motorcars in the U.S. The Stanley Steamer, the product of twin brothers Francis and Freeland Stanley, proved the most famous and the longest lasting, with their firm making cars from 1897 through 1927. all from around the turn of the century. Swigart’s cars are maintained in operating condition and Pat frequently takes a Duesenberg or a Cord or another grand oldie on an antique car tour. Pat Swigart drove one of the collection’s three Duesenbergs, a 1929 J long- wheelbase coupe, on the 2004 Glidden Tour. Mostly, the cars are stored in a safe environment in a modern warehouse, awaiting rotation into the museum. Among the cars in the 200-unit collection are an 1899 Locomobile, 1902 Cadillac rear-entrance tonneau, 1904 air-cooled Franklin, 1910 Packard 30 limousine, 1931 Marmon V-16 convertible sedan, 1913 Chevrolet, 1932 Plymouth, 1910 Oldsmobile Limited, and a 1908 Studebaker electric. The ’08 Studebaker was a 12-passenger vehicle owned by the federal government and used to transport people between the Senate and the House through a tunnel; it featured two front ends so it could reverse direction without turning around and still appear proper.
