In this superhero game the little superheroes break into two teams and race to remove all the pieces of kryptonite without touching them with their hands. To make kryptonite, ball up aluminum foil and paint them green. Materials: 30 foil balls sprayed painted green, 4- 2’ dowel rods, 2 baskets or buckets To Play: Divide students into two teams forming two lines. Provide each team with two dowel sticks and enough kryptonite balls for every player, maybe two for every player. On the other end of the party space place two baskets (buckets, boxes, laundry baskets will all work) On “GO” one member from each team uses their krypto sticks (dowel stick) to grip the kryptonite balls and run them over to their teams’ bucket. They run back and pass the krypto sticks to the next player. The race continues until one team gets all their kryptonite into the basket. Space Station 2. If I Were a Super Hero… Materials: lined paper with space for drawing a picture or lined paper and drawing paper, pencil, crayons. Give each student drawing and writing paper. Put the following writing prompt: If I were a Super Hero… on the board along with words associated with Super Heroes. Encourage students to write what kind of Super Hero they would be, what their costume would look like, what special powers they would have, what would they do when they weren’t saving people, would they like being a super hero…If they finish writing, they may draw a picture of themselves as a Super Hero. 3 Space Station 3. BOOM! POW! ZAP! What better way to explore interjections and onomatopoeia than with super heroes and comics?! Using fun sound effects and even basic interjections, students can use comic-style speech bubbles to explore these topics. Define: Onomatopoeia (The use of words such as buzz or murmur that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. • Make a list of words used in Super Hero books or comics that are examples of Onomatopoeia. Allow them to make the sounds as the read them. Tape/paste photos of scenes, people, and situations onto large chart paper. • Using print-off speech bubbles or letting students make their own with POST - Its, have them create coordinating onomatopoeia to label each picture. • Students add each of their completed onomatopoeia bubbles around the image in the center of each chart paper. Engage students in a class discussion about similar and different sound effects they used to label each image and why. Formative Assessments: (ongoing) Classroom helpers sit near children during reading aloud or partner reading to help them attend to story. 11:00 – Summarizing: (Example: What are 3 things you learned about perseverance and obstacles today?) 11:15 Bathroom break and hand washing Wash hands and enjoy lunch together. • AKA Clark Kent) Middle Name Is Joseph
Superman’s (AKA Clark Kent) Middle Name Is Joseph. What’s that?! There in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s the Man of Tomorrow! Superman has gone by many names over the years, but one thing has remained the same. He has always stood for what’s best about humanity, all of our potential for terrible destructive acts, but also our choice to not act on the level of destruction we could wreak. Superman was first created in 1933 by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, the writer and artist respectively. His first appearance was in Action Comics #1, and that was the beginning of a long and illustrious career for the Man of Steel. In his unmistakable blue suit with red cape, and the stylized red S on his chest, the figure of Superman has become one of the most recognizable in the world. The original Superman character was a bald telepathic villain that was focused on world domination. It was like a mix of Lex Luthor and Professor X. Superman’s powers include incredible strength, the ability to fly. X-ray vision, super speed, invulnerability to most attacks, super hearing, and super breath. He is nearly unstoppable. However, Superman does have one weakness, Kryptonite. When exposed to this radioactive element from his home planet, he becomes weak and helpless. Superman’s alter ego is mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. He lives in the city of Metropolis and works for the newspaper the Daily Planet. Clark is in love with fellow reporter Lois Lane.

Do Not Pass Go Hasbro Inc., the toy giant that sells Monopoly, asked the board this week to block a Croatian company from registering a “Drinkopoly” logo as a trademark. In a notice of opposition, Hasbro said the sound-alike name and logo would confuse consumers – and the company had pretty impressive stats to back up the claim. “From 1934 to present, Hasbro has sold more than 220 million sets of the Monopoly board game,” the company wrote, citing the year the game was first sold by Parker Brothers, which was later acquired by Hasbro. “From 2007 to present, Hasbro's sales of products under its Monopoly marks worldwide have exceeded $3,000,000,000,” the company wrote. “The Monopoly board game is sold in over 26 languages in more than 80 countries around the world.” Over the past two years, Hasbro has filed similar cases against applications to register “Monopoly Movement,” “Alec Monopoly,” “Monopoly Enterprises,” “Slotopoly" and “Monopoly Hotels and Resorts.” Hasbro is represented by Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz PC.

"Our results show that we are able to use body motion when other cues are ambiguous or unavailable—so we basically assume that we can use body motion as a reliable cue to identity when other information is less available or reliable such as when a person is far away or when they're in bad lighting conditions. "I've always questioned why Lois Lane doesn't recognise Clark Kent or why Bruce Wayne has never been identified as Batman—now we know that they should be recognised based on their body motion!" DOI: Researchers from the University of Aberdeen have 10.1080/13506285.2016.1232327 found evidence that suggests that superheroes would be identifiable as their alter-ego personalities due to their unique body movements. Provided by University of Aberdeen The study published in the journal Visual Cognition, investigated how we are able to identify our peers, and found that when facial information is not available we can use body motion instead. The study was the first of its kind to use life-like avatars to get to the bottom of how we are so good at recognising each other. Dr Karin Pilz, from the School of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen said: "The current perception is that identity recognition is usually done on faces alone but obviously body motion is also important because we usually see people as whole bodies! • What's Your Kryptonite
BUCYRUS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH August 26, 2018 “WHAT’S YOUR KRYPTONITE” Pastor Mike Corwin TEXT: HEBREWS 12:1-3 GOD’S WORD: COLOSSIANS 3:1-11 I – SUPERMAN: Most of you, my age or older, will remember hearing on the radio or the TV – “faster than a speeding bullet…more powerful than a locomotive…able to leap tall buildings in a single bound…Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane!...It’s superman! And then we knew it was time to sit down to listen or to watch the latest episode of the superhero Superman. He was created by the minds of men in Cleveland, Ohio and made his debut in Action Comics #1 on April 18, 1938 and he has entertained us and amazed generations of people ever since. How could you not like a man who came to earth to avoid destruction, was stronger than any human being, could fly, think faster, run faster, freeze things with his breath, and on top of it all had x-ray vision. He could do anything, especially what we couldn’t. I know he was sometimes given a darker side in the modern movies, but not in the original shows. He was truly a hero who watched over and protected the people of this planet. He was invincible and could not be defeated. He had no weaknesses…except one. Kryptonite! Kryptonite was the radioactive element from his home planet of Krypton. When he got close to its ore form he was sapped of all his strength and super powers.

  • Thinking About Journalism with Superman 132
Thinking about Journalism with Superman 132 Thinking about Journalism with Superman Matthew C. Ehrlich Professor Department of Journalism University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Urbana, IL [email protected] Superman is an icon of American popular culture—variously described as being “better known than the president of the United States [and] more familiar to school children than Abraham Lincoln,” a “triumphant mixture of marketing and imagination, familiar all around the world and re-created for generation after generation,” an “ideal, a hope and a dream, the fantasy of millions,” and a symbol of “our universal longing for perfection, for wisdom and power used in service of the human race.”1 As such, the character offers “clues to hopes and tensions within the current American consciousness,” including the “tensions between our mythic values and the requirements of a democratic society.”2 This paper uses Superman as a way of thinking about journalism, following the tradition of cultural and critical studies that uses media artifacts as tools “to size up the shape, character, and direction of society itself.”3 Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent is of course a reporter for a daily newspaper (and at times for TV news as well), and many of his closest friends and colleagues are also journalists. However, although many scholars have analyzed the Superman mythology, not so many have systematically analyzed what it might say about the real-world press. The paper draws upon Superman’s multiple incarnations over the years in comics, radio, movies, and television in the context of past research and criticism regarding the popular culture phenomenon.

  • 4. the Superman/Kent Hypothesis: on the Epistemological Limit Between Human and Superhuman
Page no.57 4. The Superman/Kent hypothesis: On the epistemological limit between human and superhuman. Alexandros Schismenos PhD Scholar Philosophy of Science University of Ioannina Greece ORCID iD: http://orcid.org/0000-0001-8490-4223 E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract Everybody knows that Superman is Clark Kent. Nobody knows that Superman is Clark Kent. Located between these two absolute statements is the epistemological limit that separates the superhero fictitious universe from our universe of causal reality. The superheroic double identity is a secret shared by the superhero and the reader of the comic or the viewer of the movie, and quite often the superhero winks at the outside world, thus breaking the 4th wall and establishing this collusive relationship. However, in our hypothesis, we are interested in Superman not as a fictitious archetype, but rather as a fictitious metaphor. We are not interested in his double identity as the matrix of superheroic attributes and narratives, but rather as the differential limit between superhuman and human within the fictional universe. Because, the reader or the viewer may share the secret identity with Superman and also with Spiderman or Batman or any other superhuman, but the secret equivalence of Superman and Clark Kent contains another hidden antithesis.
