John joined the Wallsend Branch at age 22 in time for the 1974 Double Dissolution election. Like many Party members, John was outraged by the dismissal of Prime Minister and was committed to ‘maintaining the rage’ from then on. He married in 1976 and moved to Edgeworth, joining the West Wallsend Branch. He held most positions in the branch including delegate to the Wallsend SEC. He served as Secretary, then President of the SEC as well as campaign director in State Election campaigns. He worked in the oil industry and was the shop floor delegate for Workers Union and represented them at Newcastle Trades Hall Council. John represented the Party as a Councillor on Lake Macquarie Council for two terms. John has retired to Swansea where he has become a member of the Belmont Central Branch.

NOMINATIONS FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP 3 Marie Amery

Marie joined the Australian Labor Party in 1978 when she became a member of the Rooty Hill Branch and has retained membership of this Branch ever since. Her involvement in the Party has always been at the Branch level, working on every Council, State and Federal election since joining the Party. At each election Marie can be seen working on pre-poll booths, letterbox drives and working all day at the local polling booth for Labor candidates. At various times over the past forty years Marie has also been actively involved in her local community, serving on parks committee, Girl Guides Association and in the canteen of the local primary and high school. In addition to her public role as the wife of the former local Member of Parliament, Richard Amery, Marie has continued to be active in the local Branch, serving on the Branch Credentials Committee, assisting in the running of monthly meetings and has been the Branch Returning Officer for some 20 years.

Kay Anderson

Kay has been a member of the Australian Labor Party for almost 44 years. She has been a consistent member of the Emu Plains Branch and in that time has held a number of positions including branch delegate. Kay has worked on many State, Federal and Local Government campaigns in her period of membership. She is also active in her community as a Life Member of the Friends of Penrith Regional Gallery, serving as Secretary since 1994. Kay worked as a Registered Nurse and Midwife and was a member of the Nurses and Midwifes Association during her career. Kay is the wife of Peter Anderson, former member of the Legislative Assembly between 1978 and 1995.

4 AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY, NSW BRANCH Jim Angel

Nominated by KATOOMBA BRANCH Jim joined the Oberon Branch in 1974, transferring to Katoomba Branch in 1977. He served as President and Secretary of Katoomba Branch from 1980 to 2007, Secretary and President of both the Blue Mountains SEC and Macquarie FEC and many times delegate to the Annual State Conference. Jim was a Western Coalfields representative for the Electrical Trades Union, then employed as a Training Officer for the Metal Trades Federation of Unions/Trade Union Training Authority. Jim was elected to Blue Mountains City Council in 1981 and served on council until 2008. He was the longest serving Mayor of ten years, in addition to six years as Deputy Mayor. He was Deputy Chair of Prospect County Council in 1987 and delegate representing the cities of Blue Mountains, Lithgow and the Shire of Rylstone. Jim also served many terms as delegate to the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils and was appointed for a term as board member of the Economic Development Board.

Barbara Armitage

Nominated by KATOOMBA BRANCH Barbara joined the Australian Labor Party in 1975 at the North Bondi Branch. She soon transferred to the Waverley Branch and then the Bronte Branch before settling at the Katoomba Branch in 1997. During her time in the Waverley area, she ran in the Local Government Election in 1977 and then was elected to Waverley Council in a by-election. She served on the Council for 20 years including 10 years as Mayor. Barbara was the Labor endorsed candidate for the 1994 Vaucluse by-election. Barbara was Chair of the NSW Local Government Grants Commission, a member of the Premiers Crime Prevention Council and Chair of Sydney Coast Councils.

Nominated by BALMAIN BRANCH Jennifer joined the Balmain Branch in 1976. She has been a branch member and unionist ever since. Jennifer worked as an Electorate Officer for Rodney Cavalier, former Member for Gladesville and former Senator before retiring. She aslo served as Assistant Secretary of the Balmain Branch and alternate delegate to the local SEC. She is passionate about the values of social justice and equality and is a strong supporter of Labor candidates at all levels of Government.

Mary Callcott

Nominated by MAYFIELD BRANCH Supported by MP

Mary joined the Australian Labor Party in 1974. She has maintained active membership of her local Mayfield Branch. Mary has campaigned for all three tiers of Government since the beginning of her membership, from doorknocking to handing out how-to-votes on Election Day. Mary assisted many candidates by running their postal vote campaign as well as visiting housebound supporters and aged care residents to ensure they had contact with the Labor campaigns. In the branch, Mary was the auditor for many years and previously represented the branch at the ALP Women’s Health Collective and Emily’s List. Mary is an avid attendee of fundraisers, often travelling to Sydney to attend.

Ann joined the Balmain Branch of the ALP in 1975 and has remained an active member of that Branch ever since. Ann has been Vice President and President of the Branch over the years as well as a member of the Economic Policy Committee. Ann was a delegate to National Conference throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Ann is a life member of the Finance Sector Union and was both the President and Vice President of the then Commonwealth Bank Officers Association.

Douglas Cliffe

Douglas joined the Camden Branch in 1974 and has been an active member ever since. He has held the position of Returning Officer and Assistant Secretary in the Branch throughout this time. Douglas has also been a delegate to both Macarthur FEC and Camden SEC throughout his time. Douglas was a member of the Australaisan Coal & Shale Employees Federation.

In 1975, with husband Gary, Carol lived in London and marched along the Strand in a rally for Gough Whitlam when hearing of his dismissal. Upon their return to Australia in 1978, Carol and Gary joined the Newcastle Branch. Throughout the years, Carol has held a range of positions in the branch including Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Delegate to SEC and FEC as well as co-Branch Campaign Director. She worked consistently with all the usual election campaign efforts, even working on a booth in Ballina while on holidays. Carol was Treasurer for Newcastle SEC for 13 years and co-Campaign Office organiser during State Election Campaigns. In 2013, she transferred to Newcastle City Day Branch and remained an SEC Delegate. She continues to be involved in fundraising and campaigns. As a teacher in both high schools and TAFE, Carol was a member of the Teachers Federation.

Betty has been a dedicated supporter of the Australian Labor Party since joining the Mayfield Branch more than 50 years ago. She is a long-term delegate to the Newcastle FEC and a very diligent campaign worker. Rarely missing a meeting, Betty has coordinated the monthly raffle at the Mayfield Branch meetings without respite for decades. During election campaigns, across all tiers of Government, Betty’s calm and supportive nature is always welcomed as she dedicates countless hours to staffing her local polling booth on Election Day. Outside of her work for the Party, Betty is heavily involved with her local community and was a member of the Shop Assistants Union. Betty is also a recipient of the Party’s McKell award.

John Curry

Nominated by KATOOMBA BRANCH John began his involvement with the Labor Party in 1971 through the St George Young Labor Association. John served in his local Young Labor district as President and Secretary as well as delegate to Youth Council and Annual State Conference. From 1977, John was an Industrial Officer with the Administrative & Clerical Officers' Association (now known as the CPSU). John went on to become Assistant Private Secretary and then Senior Private Secretary to then Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Hon Sen Arthur Gietzelt. John transferred to the Katoomba Branch in 1983 before moving to where he was a member of the Dickson Branch. Upon his return in 1990, he re-joined the Katoomba Branch and has been a member ever since. John has served as a delegate to Macquarie FEC and Blue Mountains SEC, as well as being an endorsed Labor candidate on the Blue Mountains Council ticket.

Ross joined the Australian Labor Party in 1978 while teaching at Cobar High School. He had joined the Teachers Federation while training to be a teacher in 1972 and has been a member ever since. Upon returning to his hometown of Randwick, Ross transferred his membership to the Randwick North Branch. In 1981, he and his wife, Kim, bought a home in Clovelly where he took up membership of the Clovelly Branch. He was President of the branch for four years and was involved with campaigns for all tiers of Government. Ross moved to the South Coast in 1993 for work and has been an active member of the Kiama Branch ever since.

Bob Debus

Nominated by KATOOMBA BRANCH Supported by Balmain Branch

Bob joined the Katoomba Branch in 1974, becoming President of the Branch in the late 1980’s. He was first elected as the State Member for the Blue Mountains in 1981, serving two terms and holding several ministerial portfolios including Finance and Employment before the loss of the marginal seat at the 1988 Election. Returning to the State Parliament when Labor won Government in 1995, he again became a minister where he held a number of portfolios including Corrective Services, Emergency Services, Environment and notably Attorney General for seven years. Bob ran for the Federal Seat of Macquarie at the 2007 Election and was elected. He held the portfolio of Home Affairs in the Rudd Ministry before retiring in 2010. He remains engaged in issues of environment protection and Aboriginal justice and continues to serve the Party as a member of the Candidate Review Committee.

Jim has been a member of the Punchbowl Branch since joining the Party in 1977. He has served as the Branch Returning Officer at various times during his membership as well as representing the branch as delegate to Banks FEC. Jim has consistently assisted with local campaigns and has always handed out on Election Day. He was previously a member of the Water Board Union during his working life where he assisted Greek- speaking workers engage the union.

Jim Edwards

Jim joined the Australian Labor Party in 1967 inspired by new Labor Leader Gough Whitlam. He joined the East Sydney Branch where he served as Secretary and President from time to time. He moved to the Waverley Branch where he has been Vice President and delegate to the local SEC and FEC. He met his wife, Julia, through the Party and they have been attending meetings together for four decades. Jim worked at the Australia Bureau of Statistics and was an active member of the Community and Public Sector Union.

Julia joined the Australian Labor Party just over forty years ago through the East Sydney Branch. Her now husband, Jim, was Secretary of the branch at the time. Following a move to Bondi Junction, the couple joined the Waverley Branch where they continue to contribute. Julia has been a member of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance as well as the Teachers Federation during her career.

Jill Finnane

Jill joined the Party in 1969 activated by her opposition to the Vietnam War. Joining the Padstow Branch, Jill became a delegate to the Women’s Conference before it was disbanded. As the youngest member of the branch, she also became the delegate to Young Labor Conference. Jill campaigned during elections doing street stalls, letterboxing and handing out how-to-votes. She also served in various branch positions including as delegate to Banks FEC. In 1994, Jill joined the Dulwich Hill Branch, and more recently joined the Labor Environment Action Network and Labor for Refugees. She is actively involved in a number of social justice organisations, often raising issues at branch meetings and organising guest speakers on issues she is passionate about.

Rick joined the Australian Labor Party in 1975 in the then Wahroonga Branch. He has been a member of the Marrickville, The Warren and Berry Shoalhaven Heads branches. At Berry Shoalhaven Heads Branch, Rick held the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, FEC Delegate, SEC Delegate and LGC Delegate. He has also held various positions across Gilmore FEC, Kiama SEC, Shoalhaven LGC and has been the campaign manager for Kiama State Electorate, winning 3 out of 4 times. He is a member of the Federated Clerks Union (now known as the USU), worked for the Finance Sector Union and is currently the Secretary of Unions Shoalhaven.

Warren Gardiner

Warren first joined the Party in May 1974 as an 18 year old student at Sydney University. He first joined the Ermington Branch, later joining the Parramatta, Lalor Park, Merrylands branches and has since settled at the Westmead Branch. Warren currently serves as Branch President and was previously Secretary of Granville SEC until 2014. Warren served four years on the Young Labor Council executive including two years as Secretary and then President in 1981. He has been a member of the Community Welfare Policy Committee, the Rules Revision Committee and the Housing Policy Committee. Warren was a delegate or proxy to every National Conference between 1984 and 1994, and a member of the National Social Policy Committee in 1985.

Nominated by CULCAIRN BRANCH David has been an active member of the Labor Party since joining in 1978. He has been a member of the Culcairn Branch throughout his membership. David has been the Secretary/Treasurer of the Culcairn Branch continuously for the past 40 years. He has been Secretary/Treasurer of Albury SEC and Farrer FEC for almost the same period. His passion and dedication is evidenced by his campaign efforts in very conservative State and Federal electorates. He has staffed the Culcairn booth in every State and Federal election since joining. David has also previously held the position of Campaign Director at the Federal Election for the electorate of Farrer.

Maxwell Hanrahan

Nominated by BATHURST BRANCH Maxwell joined the Bathurst Branch of the ALP in 1978 and has been an active branch member ever since. Maxwell has previously held the position of President of the Branch. He has proved extremely valuable during election campaigns, serving as the campaign director for the local Labor candidate for 30 years. He was an active member of the Public Service Association for 50 years while working for the Department of Corrective Services.

Peter is a long standing member of the Australian Labor Party with an extensive involvement in policy development within the Party. Since 1985 until 2012 he was closely involved in education policy as Chair of the Education and Skills Policy Committee. In this capacity he has presented the Committee’s Report to many State Conferences. Over the years, Peter has served as a Board member of the NSW Senior School Studies and been closely involved with the foundation of a multi- campus university structure for western and south-western Sydney. He has worked closely with both Federal and State Labor Ministers for Education over the last 25 years. He is now a member of the Harbord Branch and is much involved with a range of projects in the Freshwater community.

Joe joined the ALP in 1978 in Armidale where he attended senior school and university. He moved to the Narrabri Branch in 1983 when he commenced his employment with the Department of Corrective Services. After moving to Moree in 1987 he became President of the Branch. Joe relocated to Gunnedah in the early 1990s and was again elected Branch President in 2001 and then Branch Secretary each year until 2011. Joe transferred to Tamworth Branch where he was well known among the Tamworth members having been the Tamworth SEC Secretary from 2005. He was President of the Tamworth Branch from 2012 and 2014. Joe has also been regularly elected to represent his SEC or FEC as delegate to numerous State and Country Conferences. Joe was a recipient of the McKell Award in 2010 and was the Country Labor candidate for the state seat of Tamworth in 2015. Joe has also been a proud unionist for nearly all of his adult life. He was a member of the PSA for 34 years and since retiring from the public service has become a wool classer and is now a member of the AWU.

Marion joined the Australian Labor Party in 1972 originally joining the Parramatta Branch. Marion then went onto join the Winston Hills Branch in the following year where she was President until 1980 as well as delegate to the local SEC and FEC. She took on the role of President for both The Hills SEC and Mitchell FEC during that time. Marion was the Women's Labor Conference delegate for Parramatta as well. Marion moved to Taree in 1980 where she transferred to the Taree Branch and again was elected President for another 10 years. She has also served as a delegate to Lyne FEC and Myall Lakes SEC for over a decade. She has been involved in her local community as Manning District Emergency Accommodation Secretary and President as well as President of the Taree TAFE Committee.

Janice Howland

Janice joined the Lalor Park Branch of the Party in the 1970s. She has assisted successive Labor candidates and Members of Parliament in Western Sydney for decades. She took up positions in the branch including currently serving as Vice President and New Members Officer. She has been elected to the Riverstone SEC, Greenway FEC and Blacktown LGC. Janice was a member of the Australian Workers Union during her working life as a shop steward.

Noel joined the Australian Labor Party in 1977 and has been a stalwart of the Adamstown Branch ever since. He has been Secretary of the Branch since 1984 and Delegate to the Newcastle FEC since 1992 among many other positions in the Branch, SEC and FEC. In particular, Noel’s work as a meticulous FEC Treasurer is highly regarded locally. Noel has been Campaign Director for numerous election campaigns at all tiers of Government. He was also the Newcastle electorate Campaign Director for the 1999 Republic Referendum. Noel is also extremely active in his local community. He has been a member of the Friends of the ABC since 1994 holding executive positions. He has been a volunteer in the Newcastle City Council Community Greening Program. Neil has also been active in the local Arts Community as a member of the Friends of the Hunter Orchestra and Hunter Professional Arts. Noel was also a volunteer with the Australian Tax Office. Noel received the Party’s McKell Award in 2002.

Anthony Jansson

Nominated by BLACKTOWN BRANCH Supported by Ed Husic MP

Tony joined the Australian Labor Party in 1972 after being inspired by the election of Gough Whitlam as Prime Minister. He has been a member of the Balmain, Bundeena and Blacktown branches during his membership holding a number of positions in the different branches including delegate to the local SEC and FEC. Tony was a proud member of the Printing and Kindred Industry Union before joining the Metal Trades Union. He now works for NSW Health and is a member of the Health Services Union. Tony has been a long-term volunteer with St Johns Ambulance serving as one of their Commanders.

In 1975, incensed by the sacking of the , David joined the Cardiff Branch of the Party. He became President of the Branch in 1985 and still holds that position to this day. David was elected to the Hunter FEC were he became Junior Vice-President and was the Hunter campaign manager in subsequent elections. With re-drawing of boundaries, Cardiff branch became part of the Charlton electorate and is currently in Shortland. David has remained a member of the respective FECs serving as Senior Vice-President. David became a member of the University of Newcastle branch of the Public Service Association of NSW in 1974. He remained a member until retirement in 2007 when he joined the Retired Officers Branch. During much of that time he served as President of that Branch. He was part of the team that researched and produced the publication “A Salute to our Past” - a brief history of the Labor movement and coal mining in the Hunter.

John joined the Australian Labor Party in 1969 at the Miranda Branch. He became Secretary of the branch in the following year serving for twelve years and later becoming Cook FEC Secretary. In his younger days he was concurrently a member of Young Labor where he served as the Southern District President for two years. He moved to the St Peters Tempe Branch before transferring to The Warren Branch where he was recently elected Secretary. He has also been Grayndler FEC Returning Officer for 10 years. In addition to his branch positions, John has been active in campaigns for over forty years including as Miranda Branch Campaign Director. John has been an active unionist, currently a member of the HSU and previously a member of the Teachers Federation and PSA where he was a member of the Executive and Delegate to the ACTU Conference.

In 1978, Tom joined the Australian Labor Party when he became a member of the Rooty Hill Branch. He has been active in every election campaign since then, being involved in all facets of campaigns from working on polling booths to being a campaign Director for both Federal and State Campaigns. Tom became the President of the Rooty Hill Branch in 1985, a position he held for 30 years. He held the positions of Secretary to both the Mount Druitt SEC and the Chifley FEC for approximately 15 years. Over the decades Tom continued to be active in Labor politics beyond the local area, serving on Party Policy Committees and as a delegate to the Annual State Conference. He was an active member of the Professional, Radio and Electronics Institute where he served a period as Vice President.

Fay Mackinder

Fay joined the Punchbowl Branch of the Party in 1976 and has been attending almost every meeting since. Fay has consistently letterboxed, handed out at pre-poll and volunteered on Election Days since the beginning of her membership. Fay never sought any positions in the Party but has been a reliable member of the branch for over four decades with her husband John.

John joined the Australian Labor Party at the Riverwood North Branch in 1969. He moved to the Punchbowl Branch in the year following and has been a contributing member ever since. John has served as Vice President of the Punchbowl Branch as well as delegate to both Lakemba SEC and Banks FEC. Along with his wife Fay, he has been a dependable member of the branch and a fixture on local campaigns. John was a member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union whilst working.

Margaret Maher

Nominated by ABBOTSFORD BRANCH Supported by Hon. John Murphy, Hon. Gary McIlwaine and Clr Lucille McKenna

Margaret has been a stalwart of the Party for more than four decades. Margaret was a member of the Five Dock Branch before joining the Abbotsford Branch in 1974. She served as Returning Officer and delegate to the FEC from time to time during her membership. Margaret was the wife of the late Michael Maher, former Member for the State Seat of Drummoyne and Federal Seat of Lowe. In the time before MPs had local Electorate Offices, Margaret opened up her home to serve as a local base for the Party even welcoming constituents as guests where she personally helped them with their matters. On Election Days, Margaret ensured booth volunteers were well fed and watered – a role she continued even after her husband retired. Margaret worked in the education sector and was a member of the Sydney University Teachers Association and then the National Tertiary Education Union.

22 AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY, NSW BRANCH Judy Mahon

Judy joined the Australian Labor Party in 1959 and has been an active member of the Botany, Earlwood, and Milton Ulladulla branches. She has actively campaigned for the Party at every election since joining.

Judy has held a number of branch positions including Secretary of Milton Ulladulla Branch. In 1977, Judy was elected to Canterbury Council where she served as a councillor for 13 years. When first elected Judy successfully battled against entrenched gender bias at the Sydney Turf Club which had excluded her from a formal dinner for councillors on the basis that she was a woman. She also served as a National President of the Anti-Nuclear Councils Australia group and has been an environmental activist participating in national campaigns. Now in her 80s, Judy continues as an active Labor Party member. She is still engaged in branch meeting debates and participates in Milton Ulladulla Branch Women’s Forum meetings as well as actively campaigning for our Federal, State, and Local Government candidates at street stalls, public meetings, pre-poll and Election Days. Judy is a past member of the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association and the Commonwealth Bank Officers Association.

Brian originally joined the Marrickville Central Branch in 1955. Moving to Padstow to raise his family, Brian‘s membership lapsed but he re-joined in 1974. In the 1980s he served as Padstow Branch Vice President and then President for four years. In his younger days he participated in all the usual local campaign activities, letterboxing, erecting signs, pre-poll and handing out how-to- votes on Election Day. Despite his busy business life, Brian continued as an active member of the Padstow Branch. Though more recently in poor health, he still attends some meetings and assists on Election Days. Brian is a strong and vocal advocate of Labor values and policies, raising issues at branch meetings, writing letters to local newspapers and putting the Labor case to fellow members at his local club.

Anyce Melham

Anyce joined the Australian Labor Party on his 21st birthday joining the Panania Branch. Anyce has assisted at every Federal, State and Local Government Election since joining from letterboxing electorates to working on polling booths. Anyce is the brother of former Federal Member for Banks, Daryl Melham.

Outraged by the dismissal of Gough Whitlam, Anne joined the Australian Labor Party in 1975 becoming an active member in the Newcastle Branch. In 2016, Anne transferred to the Newcastle City Day Branch where she has continued her branch involvement. Her husband Allan was the Federal Member for Newcastle from 1983 to 2001. Anne is known for welcoming members and supporters to her home to assist with fundraising for election campaigns.

Judy Moynham

Judy joined Panania Branch of Australian Labor Party in 1978. She held positions as Delegate to State Conference from either Banks FEC or East Hills SEC for over 20 years. Judy was delegate to Banks FEC for more than 30 years and Treasurer of Banks FEC for 27 years. Judy was also Delegate to East Hills SEC for more than 20 years as well as Auditor for SEC and Treasurer for three years. Judy was an executive member of the NSW Labor Women’s Committee until it was disbanded. She has held various branch position and has worked on every State, Federal and Council Election since 1978. Judy has also been a member of United Services Union for 25 years.

Iris has been an active member of the Australian Labor Party since 1978. She has been a member of Newcastle, Stockton, Wickham/Islington and Mayfield branches. Iris has held positions such as President throughout this time as well as being a delegate to Newcastle SEC. Iris has spent countless hours campaigning for Labor candidates at all levels of Government.

Ron Nimmo

Ron joined the Labor Party in 1975, two days after the dismissal of Gough Whitlam. He has been a stalwart of both the Padstow Branch and the since lapsed Padstow Heights Branch for more than 40 years. During this time he has served as Branch Secretary and delegate to local electorate councils. He is an energetic and reliable campaign worker who letterboxes, attends street stalls and hands out leaflets at local railway stations each election.

Thomas O'Farrell

Thomas joined the Bondi Branch of the Party in 1977. He stayed there until 1984 before he moved to the Doonside Branch. Tom was a delegate to the Blacktown Local Government Committee from 2004 to 2018 and to Blacktown SEC from 1996 to 2018. He was Vice President of the SEC from 2004 until 2017. Tom was an executive member and then Vice President of the Tram and Motor Bus Union (now known as the RTBU) from 1989 until 1993.

Nominated by BEVERLY HILLS BRANCH Rod joined the Hurstville Branch of the Australian Labor Party in 1976 and has continued to be an active member for the last 42 years. Rod was Secretary of the Hurstville Branch from 1980 to 2008 when he moved to the Penshurst Branch for a year. He since has joined the Beverly Hills Branch. He has consistently been elected to his local SEC and FEC. Rod has also been a member of Public Service Association.

Kevin O'Mara

Kevin joined the Malabar Branch of the Labor Party in 1977 and has been a reliable and active local campaigner ever since. In 1982, he transferred to the Maroubra branch where he remains. Kevin was a Transport Workers Union delegate for 20 years and the union’s delegate on the Taxi Advisory Council from 1975 to 1981.

Nominated by BALMAIN BRANCH Lesley joined the Australian Labor Party in 1976 when she became a member of the Balmain Branch. She formed the Rozelle East Branch in 1983 where she served as Secretary. Lesley later rejoined the Balmain Branch in the late 80s where she remains. She has served as delegate and alternate delegate to the LGC, SEC and FEC over the years. Lesley was also heavily involved in the union movement through her union, the Administrative and Clerical Officers' Association and then the CPSU. She served on the ACOA National Policy Committee and was an Executive Committee Member during the 1980s.

Paul Pearce

Nominated by BRONTE-WAVERLEY BRANCH Paul joined the Australian Labor Party in April 1974 through the Bronte Branch which went on to become the Bronte-Waverley Branch. Paul was the Secretary and President of in 1980 and 1981 respectively. He has held various positions in his branch and local electorate councils, as well as being delegate to State Conference over many years. He also served the Party on a number of Committees and as Deputy Ombudsman. Paul served as a councillor on Waverley Council from 1983, and was the Mayor of Waverley for seven years. He was the Labor candidate for the Federal Seat of Wentworth at the 1993, 1996, and 1998 elections. Paul was elected as the Labor member for the State Seat of Coogee in 2003 until 2011. In his time in Parliament he held many positions on a variety of committees. Paul was a member of the Australian Building and Construction Employees and Builders Labourer's Federation and the Federated Clerks' Union from 1976 until present.

Patricia Pickering

Mick joined the Labor Party in June 1976. He has been a rank-and-file member of the CPSU and its predecessor, ACOA since 1978, often acting in the role of workplace delegate.

Frances joined the Party following the dismissal of Gough Whitlam. She remained a member of her first branch, North Rocks for 28 years. During this time she served as both Secretary and President of the Branch. She also served on the then Northcott SEC and Dundas FEC, again holding the positions of Secretary and President. In more recent years, Frances became a member of the Marrickville Central Branch, once again taking on the role of Secretary and President from time to time. Frances worked as an Electorate Officer to former Deputy Premier’s Carmel Tebbutt and as well as Linda Burney and Virginia Judge. Notably, Frances has been a long-term contributor to FRANS, a disability support service. Ernie joined the Kurri Kurri Branch in 1976 and has been actively engaged in local politics since this time. He was a delegate to Cessnock LGC, Cessnock SEC and Hunter FEC consistently from 1998 to 2005. He comes from a proud union family and was the union delegate while working as a miner at the Wambo Colliery before moving closer to home at the Wangi Wangi Myuna Colliery. He was a member of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union before joining the Miners' Federation.

Barry has been a member of the Labor Party since 1977. During this time he has been a Mount Druitt North Branch member and delegate to the FEC, SEC and Blacktown LGC as well as to the Annual State Conference for more than 20 years. Barry served one term as a Councillor on in the 1990’s. Barry became a union delegate of the Waterside Workers Federation in 1970 and was elected Senior Vice President in 1988. In 1995 he was elected Assistant Branch Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. Barry still represents the MUA as a delegate to State Conference. Barry was also a founding member of the Blacktown Mount Druitt Cardiac Support Group and is the current President of the Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia.

In 1969 Margaret joined Gladesville Branch of the Labor Party. Margaret was elected as a delegate to the Ryde FEC as well as to the Women’s Conference. She was closely involved in all State and Federal election campaigns for a period of time, running on the Labor ticket herself for Hunters Hill Council. In 1984 Margaret moved to Petersham and joined the local branch. Margaret continued representing the Branch at the Women’s Conference until it was disbanded. From Petersham Branch, she was a delegate for a number of years to the LGC, SEC and FEC. Margaret worked on polling booths for the Party every year since 1963 until recent years when age made it too difficult. Margaret worked at Sydney University for 22 years and during that time was a member of the Health and Research Education Union.

Mick Simpson

Mick has been a member of the Sefton Branch of the Party since joining in 1978. He has been an active member of the branch holding various executive and delegate positions. As booth captain at the Sefton Branch for all Federal, State and Local campaigns, Mick would wake at 3am on Election Day to ensure Labor held prime place at his booth. He also provided transport for elderly and disabled ALP voters during the day. Mick proudly drove the Rainbow Labor Float down Oxford Street for Mardi Gras for a number of years. Mick was a recipient of the Party’s McKell Award in 2004. He has been active in his community on the through the Chester Hill RSL Club, Bankstown TAFE Community College Committee, Sefton Blue Light Disco Committee and Georges River State Recreation Trust.

Jim joined the Australian Labor Party in 1965 at the Riverwood Branch before moving to the Peakhurst Branch. When Jim moved to Tweed Heads in 1979, he transferred to the local branch. He has worked consistently in every Local Government, State and Federal election until his age prevented him where he was infamously known for his efficient A-frame construction. Jim never aspired to run for branch positions but from time to time served as Senior Vice President or Returning Officer in the Tweed Heads Branch when needed. Jim has been a valuable source of support for Members of Parliament, candidates and Party Members in Northern NSW.

William Thompson

Bill joined the Party in 1964 through the Rockdale Branch. There he held the position of Branch Secretary and delegate to the FEC and SEC while also participating in Young Labor. He transferred to The Entrance Branch in 1974 where he served as Branch President, delegate to the SEC and FEC, Returning Officer and Branch Campaign Organiser. Bill then became an inaugural member of the Tumbi Umbi Branch where he has remained. He has served as Branch President, SEC President and FEC President. In 1999, Bill was elected as Wyong Councillor where he served until 2004. During his working life, Bill maintained strong union affiliation as a member of the Vehicle Builders Employees Federation, Builders Labourers Federation, Painters and Decorators Union, Postal Workers Union, and with the Port Workers.

NOMINATIONS FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP 33 Mark Worthington

Nominated by BATHURST BRANCH Mark joined the Australian Labor Party through the Paddington Branch in 1970. Shortly afterwards he moved to Randwick, transferring to the South Coogee Branch where he actively participated in State election campaign of 1970. In 1973 he moved to Bathurst, joining the Bathurst Branch and was again actively involved campaign for the State Seat of Bathurst. Mark gained pre-selection as the Labor candidate for Bathurst at the following State election in 1976. Despite gaining a swing of almost 10 percent it wasn't enough to dislodge the long-serving Country Party Member. Mark was again the endorsed candidate at the 1978 election but just fell short. Mark has proudly retained his membership and actively supported the Labor candidates at every State and Federal election that has followed.

Colin joined the Australian Labor Party in 1978. Colin is a staunch unionist and was never afraid to speak up for his and others' working conditions. He was a member of the Liquor Trades Union, Health Services Union and later the Public Service Association. Colin held the position of Secretary and Treasurer of Umina Branch from 1978 to 2008. He has also previously been delegate to the SEC, FEC and in particular to the LGC where he was President. He was Campaign Manager for the 1985 election in the Seat of Peats. Following his move to the North Coast, Colin joined the Mullumbimby Brunswick Valley Branch where he has held almost every branch executive position as well as delegate to the SEC and FEC. During elections, Colin assists by co-ordinating booth rosters, handing out on street stalls, pre-poll, captaining a booth on Election Day and volunteers to scrutineer. Colin shows the same dedicated service to the Rural Fire Service where he has volunteered for 10 years.
