4 In front of a crowd of journalists specially convened This new chapter in RTL Radio’s history could not at RTL Radio’s ‘Grand Studio’ on rue Bayard in be complete without the arrival of TV and radio , Christopher Baldelli, CEO of RTL Radio in presenter Laurent Ruquier, who left the studios France, cut to the chase: “RTL is making changes of neighbouring , to take the helm of because the world is changing too (…) standing Les Grosses Têtes from Philippe Bouvard (who still is dangerous”. The evidence of this statement will continue to feature on the weekend show is there for all to see, as Baldelli further explained: Allô Bouvard). In the traditional end-of-season “Over the past fi ve years we’ve already changed exchange of presenters, Laurent Ruquier is the radio 90 per cent of our programme schedule” – a bold station’s biggest catch of the past couple of years, move for a medium once thought to be dependent and his arrival at rue Bayard helps the station rise on listeners’ habits and loyalty. to a major challenge: Bouvard’s previous departure at the end of 2000 triggered a signifi cant drop in “OVER THE PAST FIVE RTL Radio’s audience fi gures, forcing the station to YEARS WE’VE ALREADY swiftly recall its emblematic presenter. CHANGED 90 PER CENT OF OUR PROGRAMME SCHEDULE” Christopher Baldelli

Amidst an ongoing digital revolution, competition ©Abaca Press pour RTL in the French radio sector has never been fi ercer. RTL Radio, the leading general-interest radio station in France, and the top-ranking station in terms of audience share, commanding no less than 11.1 per cent1 (the only radio broadcaster to have crossed the 10-point threshold), is currently second in terms of its cumulative audience2, behind NRJ (editor’s note: RTL Radio also ended last season with the highest ratings for its morning and evening Christopher Baldelli (right) and Laurent Ruquier shows, across all audience criteria).

The morning show, weekday evenings and “THESE CHANGES Laurent Ruquier in the place of honour ARE POSITIVE Despite this scenario, a confi dent and buoyant STRUCTURAL CHOICES Christopher Baldelli also spoke about the new DESIGNED TO YIELD meticulously crafted programme schedule put LONG-TERM BENEFITS” together by News Director Jacques Esnous and Christopher Baldelli Programme Director Jacques Expert. For starters, Yves Calvi’s arrival to present the morning show RTL Matin – the prime time slot for radio – It was understandable, then, that Christopher Baldelli replacing former host Laurent Bazin, and the chose to remain cautious about his expectations of substitution of the football coverage on weekday the renewal of the fl agship programme: “We are evenings with the discovery programme not expecting the programme to do as well in the La curiosité est un vilain défaut, constitute short term as it did under Philippe Bouvard’s tenure, major changes for the radio station. None the less, but we do expect this to happen eventually”. The RTL Radio’s team are very careful when objective is to “remain the leader in this slot”, Baldelli implementing changes which, rather than stressed. To achieve this, RTL Radio is going to constituting a knee-jerk reaction to lower ratings great lengths to not alter the spirit of the programme, attributable to economic factors, “instead and is also banking on the magnetic personality and embody RTL’s identity and enterprise”, Baldelli talents of its new presenter, which made Europe 1 stressed. The German Radio Award for the ‘Best morning show’ category went to Arno und die Morgencrew (Arno And The Morning Crew) on 104.6 RTL. Germany – 8 September 2014

German comedian Wolfgang Trepper presented the Grimme-Jury’s award to the show’s two presenters Katja Desens and Arno Müller at the gala event in Hamburg

The Grimme Institute’s panel of judges considered that the morning show was outstanding. On 104.6 RTL, Katja Desens and Arno Müller provide everything to make a successful morning show. And they have been doing so for over 20 years at the highest professional level.

Arno und die Morgencrew which is broadcast every weekday morning has become an institution in Berlin. 8 Gert Zimmer, CEO RTL Radio Deutschland, commented: “The German Radio Award is a well-earned reward for the show’s format and style, which has been running successfully for over 20 years. Katja Desens and Arno Müller are able to establish a close link with their listeners through plenty of humour, personality and by taking pleasure in their work. They are irreplaceable, often imitated but never equalled. I would like to congratulate the team on this great achievement.”

Stephan Schmitter, Managing Director of RTL Radio Center Berlin, added: “I am delighted for my team! The award is a fantastic reward and confi rmation of the intensive work they put in every day to create Berlin’s most successful morning show!”

For Arno Müller it is not the fi rst award he has received from the Grimme-Jury. In 2012 he received a lifetime achievement award. Last year, Jürgen Kerbel won the German Radio Award for the ‘Best Comedy’ for his comedy format Ungefragt Nachgefragt, which is a regular feature on Arno und die Morgencrew.

THE BEST RADIO MANAGERS

In its latest edition, the Kress Report names the top ten radio managers in Germany. The list also includes managers of RTL Radio Deutschland:

At number four is Arno Müller, Programme Director and presenter at 104.6 RTL. Kress wrote: “Two years ago Arno Müller, Programme Director and presenter at 104.6 RTL, received the German Radio Award for ‘Lifetime Achievement’ – far too early, as he says himself. He is certainly not planning to retire any time soon. He wants to remain loyal to RTL until the end.”

At number three is Stephan Schmitter, Managing Director of RTL Radio Center Berlin. Kress added: “The Munich-born manager, who has been running RTL Radio Center Berlin since 2007, understands that radio waves are media brands which have to entertain the listeners not only through the air but also in the real and digital world.”

9 “ONLINE VIDEO IS OUR BIGGEST GROWTH SEGMENT” RTL Group

In an interview with Wirtschaftswoche’s departing Chief Editor, Roland Tichy, at the digital marketing tradeshow Dmexco, Anke Schäferkordt, Co-CEO of RTL Group and CEO of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, spoke about the future of online video. Luxembourg – 11 September 2014

The ‘Debate Hall’ was very well fi lled when Roland Tichy introduced Anke Schäferkordt as the ‘Queen of German Television’. In their conversation about changes in media use, Schäferkordt emphasised that “digitisation has changed the TV landscape – and we were active participants in this development. We see ourselves as a provider of video on all platforms and screens. Online video is RTL Group’s biggest growth segment.” Schäferkordt freely admits that she herself feels very much at home on all screens – whether computer, mobile phones, tablets or classic TV screens, as they surrendered willingly. “Last year, 45 million video-enabled devices were sold – I see this as a great opportunity for us,” says Schäferkordt.

Roland Tichy (on the right) introduced Schäferkordt as the ‘Queen of German Television’

As CEO of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, she addressed the fragmentation that accompanies digitisation, at an early stage. Schäferkordt says the trend will continue: “The major networks – the big fi ve – will continue to lose market share overall. It will become more and more diffi cult to generate any kind of mainstream.” By the same token, however, she said this means that large reach becomes all the more valuable for advertisers.

10 As a TV company, Schäferkordt explained, RTL Group traditionally focuses on quality long-form content such as movies, shows and series. Meanwhile, in the course of digitisation, it is initially mostly short-form, user-generated content that is being watched online. Nowadays, this content can be monetised as well: “The market for user-generated content has become more professional over the past few years, which makes it more marketable,” noted Schäferkordt. That is why RTL Group has invested heavily in this area – especially in North America – e.g. with its investment in the Multichannel Network BroadbandTV. While sales currently amount to merely a single-digit percentage of the volumes generated by TV advertising, Schäferkordt is certain: “The revenue will Schäferkordt emphasised that “digitisation has come. Advertising will increasingly go where the users are.” changed the TV landscape – and we were active participants in this development” In essence, RTL Group’s focus is on “transforming the core business,” said Schäferkordt – and that is video. The idea is to monetise it appropriately. In online video advertising, Schäferkordt states there would be more automation in the future. “While the marketing of linear TV will continue to be a person-to-person business, the trend is increasingly towards automation, particularly in the area of short-form content,” concluded Schäferkordt – which is why RTL Group recently invested in the SpotXchange platform.

FIRST AGREEMENTS

At the Dmecxo, Spotxchange announced that it reached the first agreements with the European operations of RTL Group, including IP Deutschland’s Netzathleten Media and RTL Nederland’s Videostrip.

Netzathleten Media and SpotXchange will form a strategic platform partnership. Netzathleten Media will rely exclusively on SpotXchange’s supply side technology to connect and control the video inventory of the publishers bundled in ten content networks at Netzathleten Media. In addition, an integration in the Netzathleten Media interface will give publishers a central overview of the marketed video and display inventory in the future. The two partners also intend to cooperate closely on developing innovative forms of video advertising to create additional revenue opportunities and cater to the particular appetite and needs of content networks.

SpotXchange has also signed a strategic partnership with RTL Nederland’s Videostrip, the leading online video advertising network in the Netherlands. Videostrip will connect its proprietary Admatcher technology with the supply side technology from SpotXchange to further enhance yield for their publishers. The Dutch market is increasingly adopting programmatic video solutions to access available inventory at scale. SpotXchange’s technology allows Videostrip publishers to tap into this growing pool of international and domestic programmatic demand.
