The Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Program aims to identify youth writers and leaders who are committed to civic and community engagement, and performance, leadership and education across Hampton Roads.

The Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate is a joint program of Teens with a Purpose, Hampton Roads Youth Poets, and in partnership with Urban Word, supported by PEN Center USA and the Academy of American Poets. The Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate program aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic and commu- nity engagement, poetry and performance, and leadership and education across Norfolk, Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton, and Suffolk.

From March 1st to May 1st., Teens with a Purpose will accept submissions from young poets, rappers, leaders and activists ages 14-19 from across Hampton Roads who are interested, meet 2016 Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate: Dayana Lee as she features at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Virginia Beach, Friday, April 21st, 3pm to 5pm during the Hear This! Middle School Poetry Slam. A group of esteemed judges will select one teen to be honored with the title of Hampton Road Youth Poet Laureate on May 11th, at Slover Library, 235 E Plume St, Norfolk, VA 23510 from 5pm to 7:30pm.

Along with winning the prestigious title of Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate, the winning poet will also win a book deal from Penmanship Books to publish their first collection of poems, as well as a library tour. The Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate will have numer- ous opportunities and platforms to share their powerful voices, their leadership, and love of Hampton Roads at numerous events. CONTEST RULES/HOW to APPLY 2017-2018 Hampton Roads Youth Poet Laureate Submission Guidelines:

1: Applicants must be from Hampton Roads, and between the ages of 14-19 years old

2: Submit 3 Original Poems / Raps / Performances (and/or YouTube Links to your poems)

3: Submit at least one poem that speaks to the themes of Human Relations, Diversity and Social Justice.

4: Include a RESUME that has your name, address, phone # and email, AS WELL AS detailing all of your accomplishments, community service, after school programs, volunteer experiences and awards (if you want a sheet for this please visit our website or ask your teacher to help)

Charles Johnson, born In Portsmouth, Virginia, resident of Norfolk, Virginia. He is a member of Norfolk's Fair and Impartial Policing Committee and Virginia's Poetry Out Loud Committee. He is the father of an artistic and academic daughter in the Norfolk Public School System. Portsmouth Elementary-High Public Schools, Norfolk State University Graduate, UVA Continuing Education. Virginia Beach Public School Teacher (42 + yrs -retired). Mr. Johnson Community Involvement includes: Attucks Cultural Center Board, Norfolk Public Library Board of Trustees, Y on Granby Board, African-American Historical Society of Portsmouth Board, Park Place Child Life Center Board, Park Place Civic League Board, Healthy Neighborhood Enterprise Board, Etc.

Fawn Faulks born in Virginia Beach, Virginia, graduate of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from ITT-Technical School. Retired Norfolk Sher- iff’s Corporal in the Community Affairs Division. “Straight Talk from the Heart Program" program allowed her to work with troubled kids in the community and in a jail setting. Fawn worked with the youth in mentor programs at alternative schools, early childhood development centers and community based programs and helped to form the Sheriff’s Summer Camp program. In 2016 she was elected to the Board of Hampton Roads Pride and is now the Vice President. Her mission and vision is to see that there is truly diversity and inclusion where all are equally welcomed and valued, regardless of sexual orienta- tion or gender identity.

Marie Carter is a Norfolk Public School teacher and parent. She has been teaching middle school math in Norfolk for 6 years and currently teaches at the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood. She is also the host for ADL's "Hear This" poetry club sponsored by Teens With a Purpose.

Tonya Marie Shell is a decedent of West African and Jamaican roots. Born in Boston Massachusetts but has spent the greater portion of her life in Virginia. Tonya is known to the entertainment world and performing arts circle affectionately as “Poetikk Justice”. Poetikk has spent the last twenty-five plus years in the Hampton Roads Area. Ms. Justice is the also the founder and CEO of Renaissance Woman Productions. Poetikk Justice is also the founding producer for the AACCS (African American Cinematic Collection Series Honor Awards, Feminine Freedom Honor Awards and the 1st Annual Laughter Got Soul Comedian Awards. Truly, this is a woman of many talents and literally an outfitter of many hats. Ms. Poetikk Justice has served as the Media Director for the Virginia House of Comedy in Virginia Beach Virginia for seven years.

Tamara Hamln is a 6th grade teacher at Bayside Middle School in Virginia Beach. She is also the sponsor for Teens With a Purpose’s School Based Poetry Collective called HEAR THIS!, now in its third year at her school. She and her husband parent four lovely children. Mrs. Hamlin is originally from Roanoke and has lived in Atlanta for 18 years. She loves to travel, read, and meet new people.
